GE2020: In Tampines broadcast, PAP highlights help with jobs, sustainability agenda; NSP outlines 14 improvement plans

SINGAPORE: The People’s Action Party (PAP) and the National Solidarity Party (NSP) delivered their constituency political broadcasts for Tampines GRC on Wednesday (Jul 8).

As PAP is the incumbent, the five-member team spoke first. Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry Koh Poh Koon, Mr Desmond Choo and Ms Cheng Li Hui spoke in English. Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Masagos Zulkifli spoke in English and Malay, while Mr Baey Yam Keng spoke in Mandarin.

For the NSP candidates, party president Reno Fong spoke in English, while Mr Mohd Ridzwan Mohammad spoke in Malay. Their fellow candidates, Mr Yeo Ren-Yuan, Mr Choong Hon Heng and Mr Vincent Ng were present but did not speak.

PAP: PROVIDING HELP WITH JOBS, CREATING AN ECO-TOWN

PAP’s Mr Koh, who replaces Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat in the team, told residents that his work in the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) has emphasised the importance of transforming businesses and up-skilling workers to help them prepare for an “uncertain future”.

This is even more crucial in a post-COVID-19 world, he said.

Mr Koh noted that many residents have shared with him their fears and anxieties about jobs and job security. Their anxiety, he said, is understandable in light of the crisis.

“We will work with many of our Tampines businesses to help them weather this pandemic and thrive so that they can provide better services for all of you,” he assured.

He cited the example of a public service centre in Our Tampines Hub, a place where he and Mr Choo, who is NTUC’s assistant secretary-general, can bring in the network and resources of the unions to help residents in their job search.

He added that an upcoming rooftop garden project will also help to “galvanise interest and create interesting job opportunities here in our community”.

Mr Koh touched on upcoming developments, like the planned upgrading of Tampines Central Park, and the development of an agri-food innovation park to create opportunities for innovative agri-tech startups.

This will make Tampines the first eco-town in Singapore, and expand their “sustainability agenda”.

Mr Choo, who spoke next, acknowledged that jobs are “harder to come by” and young families are facing difficult challenges. That is why his team is expanding the network of job placement centres so residents can find community jobs, he added.

To help younger families meet their immediate needs, Mr Choo said that they will expand their care and growth programme.

“There is more that needs to be done. But we cannot do this alone. We will need your support,” he said.

Ms Cheng focused her speech on improvements that PAP made for seniors in the constituency and the work of the town council.

She talked about how a senior daycare centre in Tampines has helped retirees find friends, stay active and fit, and rekindled the “old kampung spirit” in the estate.

On improvements by the town council, Ms Cheng said it has implemented a monitoring system to study the cleaners’ cleaning patterns so as to plan their workflow better.

Mr Masagos, who concluded his team’s speeches, said that they have delivered on their promises.

In 1992, the town was given an award by the United Nations, a first here, he said.

Mr Masagos went on to say that the constituency has grown “beautifully” and called Our Tampines Hub an “icon” with world-class facilities.

He added that Mr Koh and the NTUC will “preserve our workers’ security for their jobs”.

“We will make sure those who need support and jobs will get them. Our promise is to keep Tampines our home, special.”

NSP: 14 PROPOSALS FOR GRC

NSP’s Mr Fong drilled down into constituency-specific issues, outlining 14 plans the party has for Tampines GRC.

He said they will review and construct more barrier-free infrastructure for people with disabilities, which includes ramps for easier access, and they will add elderly-friendly facilities like grab handlebars in housing and common spaces.

The team will also work with bus operators to increase the size of the font of bus service number displays and provide an arrival announcement system at bus stops.

Another proposal is to install progressive solar cells to power common facilities.

“This could lessen the conservancy charges paid by the residents,” he said.

Based on the feedback of residents, he wants to improve the overhead sheltered walkways and he also outlined how the party will use technology to keep in touch with residents.

“To implement Meet-The-People Sessions (MPS), we will include a mobile MPS where the residents do not need to travel to the static location,” he said, adding that they will look into having virtual sessions instead.

Residents can also join online discussions before and after parliamentary proceedings, and if they are keen to attend the sessions, Mr Fong said that his team will provide transport arrangements for them.

On the area of jobs, NSP will “call for tenders for service providers and contracts that require staffing with Tampines residents as a priority, matching the job scopes and aspiration of the residents,” he said.

Mr Fong also said that this team will set aside the Member of Parliament (MP) allowance as seed funding, in collaboration with local enterprises, to help the underprivileged.

The party has plans to set up a cooperative and help link up home-based businesses in Tampines so that residents can patronise the products and services.

Lastly, Mr Fong said that they will start a one-stop service centre where residents in need can get help through a precinct-level support group. This is done in collaboration with social service organisations and charity groups.

Wrapping up his speech, Mr Fong spoke about his party’s manifesto, which among other things calls for Goods and Services Tax to be waived on necessities such as cooking oil, rice and diapers.

The NSP’s manifesto also includes protecting the jobs of professionals, managers, executives and technicians (PMETs) by revisiting the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement. It also aims to provide subsidies to make housing affordable for future generations and reduce the age limit for the withdrawal of funds from the Central Provident Fund.

“Let’s do the next right thing. Help us build a kampung spirit in Tampines,” he said.

GE2020: PAP's Poh Li San says she inadvertently blocked Pink Dot on Instagram while clearing emails

[ad_1]

In response to queries as to why she untagged herself from Pink Dot’s Instagram post, Poh Li San apologised for “inadvertently” blocking the account.

Yesterday (July 7), Pink Dot asked their audience on Instagram which election candidates the millennials and Gen Z “stan” — in other words, who are popular with the youths.

They came up with a list of 12 candidates from various political parties, including the Workers’ Party’s Jamus Lim and the People’s Action Party’s (PAP) Poh.

The non-profit movement, which started in 2009 to support the LGBT community in Singapore, had tagged the candidates in their post so that people would be able to learn more about their views.

GE2020: PSP’s Tan Cheng Bock urges voters to pick MPs who ask the ‘right questions’ to prevent a ‘sterile’ Parliament

SINGAPORE: On the last day of campaigning for the General Election, Progress Singapore Party’s secretary-general Tan Cheng Bock urged voters to pick Members of Parliament (MPs) who will ask the “right questions” to ensure that the Government is more transparent and less sterile.

Speaking to reporters before visiting Clementi West residents on Wednesday afternoon (Jul 8), Dr Tan said voters should understand that any Government must be examined based on the fundamental principle of transparency. This will lead to clarity and trust in the Government, he said.

He added that if PSP candidates are voted into Parliament, they would ask questions that will reflect concerns from the ground. The country will benefit from this, he also said.

However, if the Parliament is made up of a huge majority of People’s Action Party MPs, the environment would be “sterile” as there would only be “one voice”.

“So what I’m hoping is that when we get a chance to go into Parliament, I would expect the (PSP) MPs who got in to ask the right questions,” Dr Tan said.

“Not just ask questions for the sake of asking questions, but to actually ask questions to delve further into the subject, so that you can have a full understanding. And then this will be reflected to the ground by the media.”

He added: “So I think the country will be better. There will be more trust. And when you do things, I think (it will be) easier”.

Dr Tan was also asked to comment on what some observers have claimed to be “negative campaigning” by certain quarters.

He replied that he had asked PSP candidates to take the moral high ground.

“We want to stay high because we want Singaporeans to understand that we can conduct an election in a very proper and gentlemen way. Because if you are looking to us as examples, can we set that example for you?

“So I told my men, stay high. You don’t have to go and criticise your opponents, how bad they are and so on. It is a contest of ideas. I got my ideas, you got your ideas right. We will let Singaporeans decide,” he added.

The PSP leader was also asked about his thoughts on campaigning in an election during the COVID-19 pandemic, with measures imposed meaning that there are no physical rallies and the number of candidates had to be limited during walkabouts.

Dr Tan, who has contested in six general elections and one Presidential Election, told reporters that campaigning this time was “really quite fun”.

He noted that the COVID-19 restrictions meant that the campaigining experience was very different this year.

“I was campaigning in the good old era where we had no such restrictions. So the restrictions did curtail some of our own movements. But generally, I think we are quite adaptable. We managed to do what is very essential for any election,” said Dr Tan.

He added that he had to turn to online recordings as a tool to spread his message to voters.

“Yeah, I had to do a lot of recordings … I must say one of the most number of recordings in my life,” said Dr Tan.

“But I am beginning to accept it. At my age, I’m beginning to learn new things like this,” said the 80-year-old.

Dr Tan is leading a PSP team to contest in West Coast GRC against an incumbent PAP team led by Minister for Communications and Information S Iswaran.

GE2020: PAP open to people's views, says Desmond Choo

[ad_1]

In the final round of constituency political broadcasts for this general election, incumbent Tampines GRC candidate Desmond Choo assured residents that he and his People’s Action Party (PAP) teammates are “open to our people’s views”.

Choo is part of the line-up defending Tampines against a team fielded by the National Solidarity Party. PAP’s segment of the broadcast focused largely on what the team has achieved so far in Tampines since the last election in 2015, including the upgraded Tampines Changkat Butterfly Garden.

Initially planned to be an enclosed park, Choo — who oversaw the project — had a change of heart after an encounter with a young resident while inspecting the garden prior to the revamp.

“I met a little girl who was probably not older than 10 years old. She was chasing after butterflies excitedly,” he recounted.

“I asked with some pride if she loved the garden. She said: ‘Yes, but shouldn’t butterflies be free? Isn’t it better?’”

Singapore election: 6 twists in the campaign as the People's Action Party and opposition battle for votes

[ad_1]

Singapore’s nine-day general election campaign comes to an end on Wednesday.

At midnight, all 192 candidates must suspend campaign activities to comply with a day-long “cooling off” period before voters make their choice on Friday.

Going into the contest, some observers had predicted the hustings would be sedate, given the ban on mass rallies and restrictions on other physical political events because of the coronavirus pandemic.

But the campaigning has been far from that, as the long-ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) and its key opponents among the 10 opposition parties locked horns – at times in acrimonious fashion – online and through the media.

With campaigning taking place largely on social media, it has been a 24/7 battle for hearts and minds.

Parties found themselves under pressure to react to attacks instantaneously, and also had to contend with supporters from opposing sides wielding derisory memes and edited video clips of the smallest of gaffes by candidates on the campaign trail.

GE2020: Voters advised to take public transport, walk to polling stations

SINGAPORE: Voters should take public transport or walk to their polling stations on Friday (Jul 10), the police said on Wednesday.

Parking will not be allowed within the premises of polling stations located in schools and community centres, the police said in a security advisory.

Parking will also not be allowed along the roads near polling stations, and vehicles found parking indiscriminately or causing obstruction will be towed away.

“There will be special drop-off points at polling stations for vehicles conveying elderly or physically disabled persons. Drivers can approach the duty election officials for assistance and directions,” the police said.

Bags and other belongings brought into the polling stations will be subjected to security checks, the police said, adding that sharp objects, flammable liquids, bulky items or large bags should not be brought along.

Voters should also leave the polling station after casting their votes and not loiter around the vicinity.

In light of the COVID-19 situation, the Elections Department will be implementing measures to ensure the safe and smooth conduct of polling, the police said.

This includes temperature screening of all voters at the start of the queue, wearing of masks by voters, ensuring safe distancing at all times and enforcing stringent hygiene practices at polling stations.

“Members of the public are advised to be socially responsible and to comply with these measures and the advice of election officials, to ensure a safe and smooth election process for everyone,” the police said.

GE2020: Tune out PAP’s ‘mudslinging’ and ‘personal attacks’, says SDP’s Chee Soon Juan to voters

SINGAPORE: The Singapore Democratic Party’s (SDP) secretary-general Chee Soon Juan asked voters to pay no attention to “mudslinging”, as the party headed into the final day of campaigning on Wednesday (Jul 8).

He was speaking to the media outside Fajar Shopping Centre, one of the stops in the SDP’s tour of the five constituencies it is contesting in.

“If you pay attention to mudslinging, how does it help you? You’re not going to address any of the issues. On the last day, tune out anything on the People’s Action Party’s (PAP) personal attacks, just focus on the issues,” Dr Chee said.

He is contesting in Bukit Batok SMC against the PAP’s Murali Pillai.

Reflecting on the nine days of campaigning, SDP chairman Paul Tambyah said that the party ran “a really outstanding campaign”, with online rallies and question and answer sessions.

“We have been forced to operate under very very unusual circumstances – we’ve had no rallies, we’ve had no large walkabouts,” he added.

“We had to talk to people through a mask and talking to elderly they don’t understand what we’re saying because they’re used to lip reading.”

Dr Tambyah said his biggest regret this election is the “inability of the PAP” to engage SDP on issues.

“The first thing we wanted to do is talk about 4Y1N and then they went into a weird thing about … the Straits Times article,” he said.

He was referring to the exchanges between the PAP and SDP during a live political debate last week when Dr Chee claimed that Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat had been “toying with the idea” of increasing Singapore’s population to 10 million. The National Population and Talent Division (NPTD) had refuted that claim earlier in the day.

The subject of population is one of the pillars of the SDP’s 4Y1N (4 Yes 1 No) election campaign, with the “1 No” referring to a population size of 10 million in Singapore.

READ: GE2020: DPM Heng denies saying Singapore should plan to increase population to 10m

After the debate, Dr Chee repeated the claim in a Facebook post linking to a Straits Times report of a dialogue that Mr Heng had with Nanyang Technological University students in March last year.

“When they (the PAP) talked about COVID-19, Dr Tan Cheng Bock and I offered to debate with Minister Chan Chun Sing, and then he wanted to know what we were going to say,” added Dr Tambyah, who is contesting in Bukit Panjang SMC.

“It’s so typical of PAP – they can’t go into a fight without knowing the opponent’s strategy and what they’re going to do.”

In response to the request for a debate, Mr Chan had said in a Facebook post on Sunday: “Why not present their plans to the voters now on how they intend to help Singapore and Singaporeans get through this most serious health and economic crisis in decades?”

Dr Tambyah, an infectious diseases expert, told reporters on Wednesday: “The Prime Minister has asked for what the opposition parties are doing about COVID and if he was not so disconnected, he would have known that for the past few months, we have been giving comments, suggestions, we’ve also said explicitly that holding an election during a pandemic is really reckless and dangerous.”

Also present at the interview was SDP’s Holland-Bukit Timah team, which comprises political scientist James Gomez, marketing communications professional Min Cheong, businessman Alfred Tan and former presidential candidate Tan Jee Say.

They are up against Foreign Affairs Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, lawyer Christopher De Souza, Senior Minister of State Sim Ann and first-time candidate Edward Chia.

“Let me tell the residents, let us be your voice in Parliament. I think it is too long a time when we hear one’s party voice,” said Mr Alfred Tan.

His teammate Ms Cheong also urged voters to “think critically” and examine what the SDP has presented.

“Delve deep, trust your intuition, look at the candidates and what they bring to the table,” she said.

Vote for opposition and send a message to PAP that they cannot just do what they want, says WP's Low Thia Kiang

[ad_1]

“The government has money, but not the citizens. PAP makes the taxes so high that the citizens are helpless.”

This refrain, adapted from a Teochew rhyme, has been used by former Workers’ Party chief Low Thia Kiang at rallies during previous general elections.

And it is how he kicks off his speech in a video that was posted on the Workers’ Party’s Facebook page this morning (July 8).

“我并不是退休,而是退而不休,以传授知识和分享经验给年轻一代团队和到工人党管理的选区巡视的方式,继续为人民服务。

我会继续培养政治斗士,使他们能在国会中应付执政党,能够有效辩论,为人民争取利益。” – 刘程强
