SYDNEY – Rain washed out the dead reverse singles matches on the final day of Australia’s Davis Cup World Group play-off with Slovakia in Sydney on Sunday.

Australia clinched their place in the 2017 World Group after taking an unassailable 3-0 lead when they won Saturday’s doubles.

Nick Kyrgios and Bernard Tomic put Australia in command with straight-set victories in Friday’s singles before Sam Groth and John Peers won the doubles.

Australia, captained by Lleyton Hewitt, will play in the World Group for a fourth consecutive year in 2017.

“We feel quietly confident no matter who we come up against, whether it’s home or away,” Hewitt said of the imminent draw.

“If we can have our two main guys with one (Kyrgios) pushing close to the top 10, the other (Tomic) 15 to 20, it’s certainly a pretty strong team on paper.” Australia are second only to the United States on the all-time list of Davis Cup champions, having won the title 28 times.
