The couple who sparked outrage for the unfriendly way they treated an elderly man who wanted a seat at a hawker centre were arrested yesterday (April 25).
A police statement released early this morning (April 26) said a 46-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman were detained for causing public nuisance at Toa Payoh Lorong 8 Market & Hawker Centre.
The statement said the police will investigate the case after receiving reports filed against a couple who allegedly used offensive language and force on a 76-year-old man.
In the incident which was captured on film, a woman was seen spewing expletives at an elderly man, while her male companion pushed him from behind, causing the man to stumble.
The video ignited outrage among netizens who called for action to be taken against the couple for not showing civic mindedness when they flatly refused to allow the man to share their ‘reserved’ table.
A woman, who claims to be a daughter of the man, has stepped forward online to express her disappointment with the couple.
In her post, she wrote: “No matter who is in the right or wrong, nobody should be treated in this manner, let alone to an old folk.”
