Explainer: Why is Singapore's Covid-19 death rate the world's lowest

Singapore has the lowest coronavirus case fatality count globally, with just 27 deaths among the more than 57,000 people who have been infected with Covid-19 in the Southeast Asian island.

At 0.05 per cent, Singapore’s death rate is well below the global average of around 3 per cent, according to data compiled by Reuters from countries that have recorded more than 1,000 cases.

A comparison with countries with a similar sized population shows a stark difference – Denmark’s death rate is around 3 per cent, while Finland’s is around 4 per cent.

Further, nobody has died from the disease in Singapore for more than two months, according to its health ministry. The country’s leading disease experts said the following are the main factors behind the phenomenon:

Infection demographics

About 95 per cent of Singapore’s Covid-19 infections are among migrant workers, mostly in their 20s or 30s, living in cramped dormitories and employed in labor-intensive sectors such as construction and shipbuilding.

3 in 10 have vitamin D deficiency – despite Singapore's sunny reputation

[ad_1]

SINGAPORE – A study published on Sept 3 in medical journal JAMA Network Open suggested that vitamin D deficiency may be associated with a higher risk of Covid-19.

Vitamin D is mainly produced in the skin when it is exposed to the ultraviolet (UV) B rays of the sun. But despite Singapore’s reputation as a “sunny island”, many here are deficient in this vitamin.

The 2010 National Health Survey found that 40 per cent of Singaporeans were deficient in vitamin D, while another 8 per cent were very deficient.

And the figures do not seem to have improved much over the past decade. Assistant Professor Verena Tan, an expert in dietetics and nutrition at the Singapore Institute of Technology, cited a 2019 study which found that the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among indoor workers here was 32.9 per cent.

Office workers, those who work in workshops and those on night shift were also found to be at a greater risk of this condition.

Dr Tan told The Straits Times on Tuesday (Sept 15) that the condition is prevalent not only in Singapore but also elsewhere in South-east Asia – despite the presence of sunlight all year round.

SINGAPORE – There were 18 new coronavirus cases confirmed as at Thursday noon (Sept 17), taking Singapore’s total to 57,532.

This is the lowest daily figure since March 16, which had 17 cases.

Thursday’s new cases included one community case who is a work pass holder, said the Ministry of Health (MOH).

There were also two imported cases, who had been placed on stay-home notices upon arrival in Singapore.

On Wednesday, MOH reported that People’s Park Complex and People’s Park Centre were visited by Covid-19 patients while they were infectious.

The malls were added to a list of places visited by community cases during their infectious period. The visits were made on Sunday.

Two new cases in the community were reported on Wednesday.

Both patients are work permit holders, and were detected from rostered routine testing of workers in the construction, marine and process sectors who stay outside dormitories. They tested positive on Tuesday.

SINGAPORE – A Singaporean man who fled from a car involved in a high-speed chase last Saturday (Sept 12) morning has been arrested.

In a statement on Thursday, the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) said the man, 29, was arrested on Wednesday for suspected drug trafficking offences. The police are also investigating him for traffic-related offences.

In the same operation, the CNB also nabbed four other Singaporeans – comprising two men and two women aged between 25 and 34 – for suspected drug offences.

About 7g of methamphetamine, also known as Ice, was seized in raids conducted in multiple locations in Singapore.

The car chase, which took place at about 1.10am last Saturday, was caught on camera with the video shared widely.

Traffic police officers were patrolling along the Central Expressway towards Seletar Expressway, near Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1, when they came across a driver who was driving at a relatively slow speed on the extreme right lane.

In an earlier statement, the police said one of the officers then signalled to the driver to stop the car so that they could conduct a check, but he refused to stop and sped off.

A man unhappy with how his elderly mum was treated at an eldercare centre recently took to Facebook to air his grievances.

In his post on Tuesday (Sept 15), Royston Tan wrote: “Shame on you to treat a helpless elderly with such insensitive & inhuman treatment [sic].”

His 76-year-old mother, who has dementia, attends daycare at St Luke’s ElderCare Hougang Centre. She felt unwell that day and vomited after lunch, he said.

Tan then took her to see a doctor and was appalled to find vomit not only on her clothes but also on the inside of her mask.

According to Tan, the care staff had placed the soiled mask back on his mum after helping to clean her up.

From the latest deals to transport updates, it seems that there’s a Telegram Channel for just about anything. Unfortunately, some are also using the app for more nefarious purposes.

A police report has been made against one middleman who has been accused of withholding over $7,000 in unpaid wages from at least 80 workers he had engaged via Telegram job advertisement channels, the police confirmed to AsiaOne today (Sept 17).

The man allegedly ran a Telegram job advertisement channel with a following of almost 20,000 before it was deleted. It would recruit part-time workers for events and various companies.
A screengrab of the now-defunct Telegram channel.PHOTO: Screengrab/InternetSpeaking to AsiaOne, one victim, who declined to be named, said that the man had engaged him to work at a music festival in June last year. Since then, he has not received his wages of about $92.

Despite the damper Covid-19 has put on all of us, 17 year-old Haven reckons that the year has been “quite a rollercoaster” for her. Signed to local music label AOR Global, the musician has released six songs since she debuted in 2019.

But what’s currently on the forefront of her music career is her upcoming single, EGO, which launches on Sept 18.

“A lot is happening right now for me,” says the singer-songwriter, who is also a secondary school student. “Friends coming and going, delayed projects and most importantly… I’ve been studying like crazy for my ‘N’ Levels!”
PHOTO: Instagram/theonlyhavenThough youthful, the singer is retrospective and shares that she’s been taking time to “reflect on what she’s done so far”.

While her heartfelt lyrics and wispy vocals, juxtaposed against her e-girl aesthetic, has caught the attention of some 5000 followers on Instagram, the music artist maintains that she’s been finding new ways to get creative during the dry season.

NTU student took upskirt, upshirt videos of 335 women in just 171 days

Almost every day for close to six months, the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) undergraduate would go on the prowl.

Shaun Ho Yan Liang would seek out women in shorts and skirts and walk near them to discreetly record an upskirt or under-shirt video using his phone.

Yesterday, the 26-year-old admitted to taking 469 such videos of 335 different victims over a period of 171 days.

He was convicted on two charges of insulting the modesty of a woman and one charge under the Films Act. Another charge under the Films Act was taken into consideration.

Ho, who was a final-year psychology student at NTU at the time, took the videos from Feb 2, 2018, at numerous locations including Eastpoint Mall, a lab in the National Institute of Education’s School of Science, and the student activity centre and overhead bridge at the North Spine of NTU.

Describing Ho’s modus operandi to the court, Deputy Public Prosecutor Sean Teh said he would trail a woman and squat or stand close to her with his phone’s rear camera aimed at her.

Tencent to mitigate setbacks in US and India with new regional hub in Singapore, analysts say

0

[ad_1]

Chinese internet giant Tencent Holdings is expected to mitigate its recent setbacks in the United States and India, according to analysts, with the opening of a new office in Singapore, a move designed to broaden its operations across Southeast Asia.

Establishing a new regional hub in Singapore is “a choice for Tencent to mitigate risks” amid trade restrictions in the US and India, said Shawn Yang, Shenzhen-based managing director of Blue Lotus Capital Advisors.

Tencent’s move to Singapore and a renewed focus on Southeast Asia have come after the company found itself caught in the middle of geopolitical tensions between Beijing and Washington.

The Trump administration plans to ban business transactions in the US with Tencent’s ubiquitous social media app WeChat from Sept 20.

WeChat and other Tencent apps have also been blacklisted by New Delhi, following a clash between Indian and Chinese troops in a disputed Himalayan border in June.
