The woman who allegedly scalded her five-year-old son to death had allegedly been abused as a child and also by her husband, the court heard yesterday.

Azlin Arujunah, and her husband, Ridzuan Mega Abdul Rahman, both 27, are on trial for allegedly scalding their son to death.

He died in October 2016 after collapsing from having hot water poured on him by Ridzuan.

Yesterday, investigating officer Mahathir Mohamad, an Assistant Superintendent at the special investigation section of the Criminal Investigation Department, read out the statements he had taken from Azlin.

In a statement taken on Nov 8, 2016, Azlin had said: “Like I said, there was no one to guide me. My whole life is filled with violence.

“I myself was a victim of hot water splashing by my parents. My husband also assaulted me so I kept it all inside me.

“When (the victim) was stubborn, I let it all out on (him).”

LOST HER OTHER KIDS

Azlin also said she regretted what she had done to the victim and asked to be given a chance to make amends, as she had “lost (her) other children” due to the incident.

Singapore flight attendants tell us the best and worst countries to visit

0

[ad_1]

A working Singaporean takes an average of about 14 days of paid leave a year, a number that’s been ranked the fifth lowest in the world. With the limited number of leave days we get, we figured it’ll be silly to waste them on overseas holidays that are underwhelming.

And who else better to ask for suggestions on the best countries to visit than those who fly for a living, specifically, aircrew — who spend about 65 to 90 hours a month travelling to almost every corner of the world.

During their layovers, flight attendants and pilots get to explore the cities, check out the local scene and be exposed to different cultures, making them the best people to ask when it comes to travelling.

To help you plan for your next holiday, we ask five current and former air stewardesses from our local airlines to list down recommend the best countries to visit, and which they’d rather avoid.

“Several people crowded around him and were taking photos as well,” said the Stomp contributor.

“The police arrested and handcuffed him like a scene out of a movie.”

In response to a Stomp query, the police said they were alerted to the incident at about 5pm.

Top secondary schools in Singapore 2019 based on PSLE COP 2018

0

[ad_1]

For parents with school-going children, it is no doubt that the PSLE is one of the most important exams your child will ever take. Your child’s scores will not only determine which school he or she can opt for but also the variety of programmes and specialisation your child will be exposed to.

Secondary education in Singapore is based on four different tracks or streams: “Integrated Programme”, “Express”, “Normal (Academic)”, or “Normal (Technical)”.

The Integrated Programme (IP) provides an integrated secondary and JC (Junior College) education, where secondary school pupils can proceed to JC without taking the GCE “O” Level Examinations. The IP leads to the “A” Level examinations or other Diplomas.

Express course is a four-year programme leading to the GCE “O” Level examination.

Normal course is a four-year programme leading to the GCE “N” Level examination. Students in the Normal course follow either the Normal (Academic), N(A), or Normal (Technical), N(T), curriculum.

New feature in Motorist app lets you chat with (or scold) drivers using their licence plate number

For drivers in the know, Motorist is a handy app to have if you’re a vehicle owner in Singapore.

The all-in-one app offers a multitude of services including but not limited to paying traffic fines, renewing road taxes and COEs, get on-demand auto services, obtain car valuations, or even sell cars online. In their own marketing affirmation, Motorist is “Singapore’s leading AutoConcierge platform that simplifies vehicle ownership”.

On Monday (Nov 18), the developers added yet another convenient feature, and it’s called Drivers Connect. What it does is allow drivers to message each other using only licence car plate numbers — Singapore’s first car plate to car plate chat function.

To put it easily, Drivers Connect lets you send text messages to the owner of a particular vehicle by keying in a car plate number. That is, if the other party has a Motorist app.

She dedicated her life to saving Singapore’s strays, spending more than $3 million over two decades of animal rescue.

Lee Siew Ying, founder of Mettacats & Dogs Sanctuary, died on Sunday (Nov 17) from stomach cancer.

During her final moments, Lee, 66, kept the animals she cared for close to her heart.

Her son Terry shared with Lianhe Zaobao that she had entrusted the shelter to him.

The 37-year-old said that his mum was diagnosed with stage four stomach cancer in April this year after she fainted while feeding cats.

“Mum couldn’t bear to part with the animals,” he added.

“When she was undergoing chemotherapy, she continued to feed them at the shelter. She was also sewing catnip toys to raise funds for the shelter.”

Since 1999, the sanctuary has taken in thousands of injured, abandoned and abused cats and dogs in Singapore, providing them much-needed tender loving care.

SINGAPORE – The Hong Kong restaurant owner who organised an illegal public gathering last month here to discuss the ongoing Hong Kong protests has been given a stern warning by the police, and was repatriated.

Mr Alex Yeung will not be allowed to enter Singapore again without prior permission from the Controller of Immigration, said the police in response to queries from The Straits Times.

Aside from him, a Singaporean real estate businessman has also been warned for facilitating the gathering. Mr Philip Chan, 55, a former Hong Kong resident, owns Kimoto Gastro Bar located at The Sail @ Marina Bay, where the gathering was held on Oct 11 evening. He is the president of the Kowloon club here which helps new immigrants integrate into Singapore society.

The gathering – which ST understands lasted about 30 minutes – was attended by mostly Hong Kongers living here who were asked to share their views on the protests.

In a video of the event, Mr Yeung was seen speaking to at least 10 people. He also led them in a chant in Cantonese: “Support Hong Kong police, protect Hong Kong, justice will win.”

Grab has partnered with rideshare services in Japan and Middle Eastern countries, allowing users to book rides using the company’s app.

The service – currently available for Singaporean and Filipino users – lists the other brands’ services as a type of ride in the app, allowing users to pay with the GrabPay eWallet and earn reward points.

Ride bookings are fulfilled by JapanTaxi in Japan and Careem in the Middle East, and cover five Japanese cities and 94 cities across 13 Middle Eastern countries, including United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Iraq, Oman, Turkey, Jordan, Morocco, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Bahrain, Lebanon and Kuwait.

This means users won’t need to download the corresponding ride-hailing app, JapanTaxi or Careem, in those countries.

In a press release, the company states that the Grab app will be set to the user’s preferred language and automatically translate messages sent via in-app between drivers and passengers.

It recommends users to set up and verify their eWallet and to top up with sufficient credit before a trip.

CPTPP signals support for Singapore, Mexican businesses to venture overseas: PM Lee

0

MEXICO CITY: The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) – which both Mexico and Singapore are part of – signals to companies that their governments encourage and support their ventures into each other’s countries, said Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Wednesday (Nov 20).

In his address to the Mexican Senate during an official visit to the country, Mr Lee said the world has seen Trans-Pacific trade grow significantly in recent years.

Singapore’s biggest market in the Americas is the US, but it also has substantial trade with Mexico and other Latin American countries.

Mexico’s largest trading partner in Asia is China but other Asian nations also present opportunities for Mexico, noted Mr Lee.

“Mexico and Singapore are both strategically located near the centres of our respective regions. As gateways to the countries around us, we can be pathfinders for trade and commerce,” he said.

“A more integrated Asia Pacific, with strong links between the two sides of the Pacific Ocean, gives countries an interest in one another’s economic success.”

Mr Lee highlighted that despite being more than 16,000km apart and separated by the Pacific Ocean, Singaporean and Mexican leaders have made several exchanges in recent years.

President Halimah Yacob – who was then speaker of Parliament – spoke in the Mexican Senate in 2017. Former president Tony Tan also made a state visit to Mexico in 2016.

Both countries speak different languages and have different cultures; yet, relations have grown over the years, said Mr Lee.

“Perhaps one reason for our growing relations is our similar histories and dispositions. We are both former colonies. Singapore was a British settlement, while Mexico was colonised by the Spanish for 300 years.

“Both were also the centres of trade for our respective regions, Asia and the Americas. So our natural instinct is to be outward-looking and to connect with others in the world,” he added.

HOPES FOR FTA WITH PACIFIC ALLIANCE

Mr Lee noted that in a globalised and integrated world, countries cooperate extensively with one another through trade agreements, such as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in the Americas and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) between Asean and China, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand.

He expressed hope that the ongoing negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the Pacific Alliance (PA) involving Mexico, Chile, Peru and Colombia – which would make Singapore an Associate State of the PA – would conclude by the end of the year.

“Concluding this FTA will not only help us deepen our relationship with you, it will also enable Mexico and the PA countries to build deeper links with Asia, including Singapore.

“The last round of FTA negotiations in Bogota went well. More than two-thirds of the FTA have now been resolved,” said Mr Lee.

The final round of negotiations will take place in Mexico City next month.

Following his address on Wednesday, Mr Lee met with various senators and attended a lunch held by Mexico’s Foreign Affairs Minister Marcelo Ebrard together with a group of governors from the States of Querétaro, Durango, Guanajuato, Oaxaca, and San Luis Potosí.

The prime minister expressed Singapore’s interest to expand cooperation with their states and welcomed the growing cooperation in the areas of infrastructure, education and master-planning.

Later in the day, he was presented with the Distinguished Guest of the City and Mayor Medal at the city hall by the mayor of Mexico City Claudia Sheinbaum.
