Football: France seizes documents in probe targeting Blatter

0

French authorities have seized documents from the the country’s football federation in connection with the Swiss criminal investigation targeting former FIFA president Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini, Switzerland said Wednesday.

The search was conducted Tuesday – two days before Blatter’s 80th birthday – with Swiss officials present while French investigators searched the French Football Federation (FFF) headquarters.

Documents in connection with Blatter’s infamous 2.0 million Swiss franc ($2.0 million, 1.8 million euros) payment to UEFA’s fallen president Platini of France, “were seized” in the search, the office of Switzerland’s attorney general said in a statement.

The statement said it asked France for cooperation on January 14.

“Pursuant to that request… and in close coordination with the Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland (OAG), the French Financial Prosecution Office proceeded yesterday to a search of the offices of the French Football Federation,” the statement said.

It added that the search was “in connection with the criminal proceedings against Mr. Joseph Blatter.” A French judiciary source said the search lasted all day and that an official statement was expected later on Wednesday.

Switzerland opened an investigation against Blatter, a Swiss citizen, in September for alleged criminal mismanagement during his tenure as FIFA’s president.

It also suspects Blatter of making a payment that was “disloyal” to FIFA.

That payment was the 2.0 million Swiss francs Blatter authorised to Platini in 2011, reportedly for consulting work the Frenchman performed a decade earlier.

Doubts surrounding that payment led FIFA to ban both Blatter and Platini from football for six years.

In the Swiss case, Platini has been questioned with a status that falls between that of a witness and an accused.

“Mr. Michel Platini’s status in the proceedings has remained unchanged,” the Swiss attorney general said Wednesday.

Between 1999 and 2002, Platini worked for FIFA out of offices rented by FFF in Paris, according to sources close to world football’s governing body.

Blatter, who on Thursday will be celebrating his 80th birthday, was replaced on February 26 by 45-year-old Gianni Infantino as FIFA’s president, ending his 18-year reign.

Infantino, who is also Swiss, has vowed to turn the page on the crisis engulfing the organisation, which erupted last May when Swiss police, upon request from US authorities, arrested seven FIFA officials at a luxury Zurich hotel.

The US justice department has since charged 39 people within world football and two companies over graft going back decades, with trials that could start this year.

And Switzerland, in addition to probing Blatter, is investigating possible corruption during the bidding for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, won by Russia and Qatar.

Blatter in an interview earlier this week vowed to clear his name before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

“One can not just let things stand as they are. The truth must be told and justice will be given to those who have it on their side,” he told SID, an AFP subsidiary, in an interview.

A successful appeal at CAS will have no impact on the Swiss criminal investigation.

Wenger brushes off fan banner urging him to quit

0

Arsene Wenger’s running feud with a section of his team’s fans showed little sign of abating after Tuesday’s FA Cup win over Hull City, with the Arsenal manager saying he had nothing to fear after supporters unveiled a banner urging him to quit.

Arsenal breezed past Hull 4-0 to reach the last eight and keep their bid for a first FA Cup hat-trick since Blackburn Rovers in the 1880s alive, but some supporters remain unhappy with the manager amid a faltering league campaign.

Fans at the Hull game unfurled a banner that said, “Arsene, thanks for the memories but it’s time to say goodbye,” provoking a defiant response from the Frenchman. “I don’t care,” Wenger told reporters after the game. “Look at the history of the club… and you will see that I have nothing to be scared of. I do not want to speak about that because it is always the same story. It is enough now.” Arsenal are third in the table, eight points behind leaders Leicester City and three behind derby rivals Tottenham Hotspur, after a run of three Premier League games without a win.

They also face elimination from the Champions League at the last-16 stage for the sixth year in a row unless they can overturn a 2-0 first-leg deficit when they travel to Barcelona next week, but Wenger insisted the team would keep fighting. “We judge the season afterwards and I’m quite amazed so many people judge it so early,” he added. “We have not given up anywhere and you will see that in the coming weeks. This club has been in a much worse position than it is today.”

Kidnapped son of slain Pakistani governor reunites with family

0

The kidnapped son of a slain Pakistani governor was reunited with his family on Wednesday after nearly five years in captivity, smiling for photographs with his mother after he was flown to his home city of Lahore.

Sporting a freshly-trimmed beard, Shahbaz Taseer appeared healthy as relatives greeted him at the airport just over a week after his father’s Islamist killer was hanged.

“We’re very, very, very happy and this is the start of a new life for us,” his sister Sanam Taseer told AFP over the phone. “It’s a beautiful day.” “We’re so happy,” added his aunt Ayesha Tammy Haq.

The circumstances surrounding Taseer’s freedom from captivity remain murky.

On Tuesday authorities announced that, acting on a tip-off, they raided a compound in the Kuchlak district of restive southwestern Balochistan province, where they found Taseer alone. It was not immediately clear when the raid took place.

However the owner of a roadside restaurant in Kuchlak told reporters that Taseer was recovered after he came to his restaurant on foot Tuesday evening.

There he ordered food then made a phone call, and personnel from paramilitary group the Frontier Corps came and picked him up.

Taseer had been abducted by Islamist gunmen from the city of Lahore in August 2011, months after his father was killed for opposing the country’s controversial blasphemy laws.

The governor’s assassin, Mumtaz Qadri, was hanged on February 29 in what analysts described as a “key moment” in Pakistan’s long battle with extremism.

The execution, together with Shahbaz’s release, have come as welcome news to Pakistan’s long beleaguered liberals who have grown more accustomed to attacks since an Islamist insurgency rose up against the state more than a decade ago.

“So used to condemning & condoling… not exactly sure how to react to good news… Allahu Akbar. God is Great. Welcome home @ShahbazTaseer,” tweeted Bilawal Bhutto, son of assassinated premier Benazir Bhutto.

During his custody, Taseer was moved between locations in the tribal areas and militant outfits, according to multiple rebel commanders.

A Taliban commander in the country’s northwest told AFP late Tuesday that Taseer was initially abducted by the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi sectarian group that is mainly based out of Punjab, which handed him over to the Pakistani Taliban.

“Militants from Lashkar-e-Jhangvi picked him up and then he was handed over to TTP,” the commander said.

Taseer spent most of his time with TTP fighters who kept him in separate locations in North and South Waziristan, and in areas close to the Afghan border, he added.

Two other militant commanders said he was later handed over to the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan which maintains close ties to Al-Qaeda.

The militant sources said Taseer was treated well and played sports with his captors.

“Taseer liked to play cricket and so militants had provided him a bat and ball which he was playing with militants,” one commander told AFP.=

Indian teenager dies after being raped and set on fire

0

A 16-year-old Indian girl who was raped and then set on fire on the roof of her home has died, police said Wednesday, the latest in a string of horrific sexual crimes in India.

The teenager, who sustained more than 90 percent burns in Monday’s attack, died in hospital early Wednesday, the investigating officer told AFP.

“Unfortunately she could not be saved despite the best efforts of the medical staff,” said Ashwani Kumar.

“We have arrested the accused, who is 19 years old and sent him to judicial custody.

“An investigation is on to find out more about the motive and details of the crime,” he said.

The accused has been charged with a slew of offences including rape and murder, Kumar said.

“The body has been sent for postmortem. We are waiting for the report.” Media reports quoted the girl’s father as saying the suspect lived nearby in their village in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh and that he had been harassing his daughter for a year despite several warnings.

Women’s rights activists accuse police of often overlooking complaints of stalking, which they say only emboldens the perpetrators.

The fatal gang-rape of a student on a bus in Delhi in 2012 shone a global spotlight on the frightening levels of violence against women in India.

Her death from injuries sustained during the brutal assault sparked some of the biggest demonstrations in India’s recent history, which intensified after being broken up by heavy-handed police tactics.

It triggered deep soul-searching about the treatment of women in a country where rape victims are often stigmatised and frequently pressured by police and relatives to drop allegations.

It also led to major reform of India’s rape laws, including speeding up of trials and increased penalties for offenders, but high numbers of assaults persist.

Last month, police arrested two men for shooting dead a 14-year-old girl who resisted their advances in Uttar Pradesh state.

Also in February, a teenage rape victim was sexually assaulted for a second time while in hospital receiving treatment for the initial attack in eastern Jharkhand state.

5 things to look out for at NDP 2016

0

SINGAPORE – While there will not be the Red Lions display and mobile column, the National Day Parade (NDP) this year will showcase other crowd favourites as it returns to the National Stadium after a 10-year hiatus.

Last week, Dr Ng Eng Hen revealed in Parliament that this year’s parade at the stadium will cost $39.4 million, double than that of previous NDP shows excluding last year’s SG50 celebrations. However, the new venue will allow organisers to stage a “different type of show”, he said.

During his speech, Dr Ng explained that the Red Lions will not be free-falling and parachuting down the National Stadium because of safety reasons. The mobile column which showcases military vehicles in a convoy will also be absent from the show, he added.

At a press conference today, NDP executive committee chairman Brigadier-General Kenneth Liow told the media that the show will adopt a “futuristic concept”.

He said: “NDP 2016 will be forward-looking, as we celebrate the first of the next 50 years of our Singapore Story.”

New elements will be in store for some 275,000 spectators who are expected to watch the parade over five shows.

So what can you expect from this year’s parade?

1. This is the NDP 2016 logo.

It was created by 19-year-old Singapore Polytechnic student Chelsea Lim, who took 10 days to work on the design.

The heart in the logo has four shades of red, which represents the diversity of races and religions in Singapore.

2. The theme for this year’s parade is Building our Singapore of Tomorrow.

BG Liow said this theme builds on the sacrifices of pioneers and is a call for Singaporeans to create a future together.

3. Look out for “futuristic” 3-D projections, unmanned technologies and performers suspended from the roof of the stadium, which also means that the roof of the stadium will likely be mostly closed.

Hint, so most of your viewing will be focused on the parade grounds and through large screens within the stadium. In this case, securing good seats will be important.

4. No change: Traditional segments such as the parade ceremony, military tattoo display, the state flag fly past and the fighter aircraft aerial salute will remain.

5. There will still both outdoor and indoor fireworks – now, that’s a first!
