Learning opportunities and salary key factors for first job among grads
SINGAPORE – Learning opportunities and benefits at work rank highly among students as important attributes for their first jobs.
In a survey conducted by online job portal STJobs, respondents listed what they expected in a first job in order of importance: learning opportunities: learning opportunities, potential salary package, benefits at work, promotions, traveling opportunities and stability at work.
The survey was conducted on 300 students from polytechnics and universities.
Learning opportunities ranked highly because students recognise the importance of picking up new skills, STJobs said in a statement.
Meanwhile, 50 per cent of university undergraduates and 36 per cent of polytechnic undergraduates expressed an interest to work in multi-national corporations because of a higher starting salary. Additionally, only four per cent of university undergraduates and 10 per cent of polytechnic undergrduates were willing to work in start-ups.
STJobs also added that almost half of the polytechnic undergraduates expected a starting salary between $2,000 and $2,500, while university undergraduates expected their starting salary to be between $3,000 and $3,500.
Tangible rewards such as work benefits and opportunities for travel also ranked highly among undergraduates’ expectations, while stability at work was least important, reflecting their desire to “try different opportunities”.

India is getting closer to having its own GPS system
India is inching closer to having its own independent satellite navigation system.
Last week, the Indian Space Research Organisation successfully launched a navigation satellite into Earth’s orbit. It is the sixth in a series of seven planned to orbit the planet, which together will make India’s home-grown independent navigation satellite system, an alternative to the US Global Positioning System that India currently relies on.
The Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System, or IRNSS, is designed to provide accurate position information to users in India as well as the region extending 1,500 kilometers (932 miles) from its boundary. The satellites will be able to track the location and positioning of vehicles, provide information to assist during natural disasters and can be integrated with mobile phones and used to provide visual and voice navigation for drivers.
“Successful launch of IRNSS-1F is an accomplishment we all take immense pride in,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s said in a statement, congratulating the scientists from ISRO after the launch.
Below is a photograph of the satellite, as it was lifted off using the space agency’s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle.
ISRO said in a statement that the launch of the seventh and final satellite that will complete the constellation for the satellite-navigation service is scheduled for next month. Satellites in the navigation system run from 1A to 1G. The first, IRNSS-1A, was launched in July 2013.

China to legalise taxi apps including Uber
BEIJING – China will seek to regulate taxi apps such as Uber and Didi Kuaidi rather than ban them, Transport Minister Yang Chuantang said on Monday.
“We will legalise them through legislation … to allow a more diversified and quality [taxi] service to meet the people’s travel demands,” Yang told reporters on the sidelines of the National People’s Congress, China’s annual parliamentary session.
Talks about drafting new regulations for taxi apps began in last year’s NPC sessions. Proposed legislations have included plans to regulate drivers’ and vehicle licenses and to establish a mechanism to monitor their operation.
The ministry said it would “press ahead” with reforms in the industry but offered few other details.
China’s Didi Kuadi and US-based Uber are widely used in China and they form part of Premier Li Keqiang’s new “Internet Plus strategy” to drive economic growth with innovation.
