Indonesian government does not recognise China's 'traditional fishing zone'

0

The Indonesian government has rejected a verbal explanation conveyed by the Chinese government over what Indonesia considers a territorial violation committed by a Chinese fishing vessel and a Chinese coast guard boat that entered Natuna waters in Riau Islands last week.

Via a charge d’affaires at the Chinese Embassy in Jakarta in a meeting with Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi earlier this week, the Chinese government denied that the Chinese fishing vessel and the country’s coast guard had violated Indonesian territory, claiming they had been in an area China calls its “traditional fishing zone”.

“In a verbal communication conveyed by the charge d’affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Jakarta, they said the incident occurred in China’s traditional fishing zone,” Retno said at the Office of the Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister in Jakarta on Thursday.

The minister added she had explained to the Chinese representative that Indonesia did not recognise the so-called traditional fishing zone.

“In the meeting we asked: ‘What does the traditional fishing zone mean?’ to clarify the meaning of this terminology,” said Retno.

“We don’t recognise this terminology at all. And, based on what reasons could this terminology exist?” she went on.

Retno said she had asked the Chinese government to explain its traditional fishing zone claims in its response to a diplomatic protest note sent by the Indonesian government shortly after the Natuna incident.

In the protest note, Indonesia conveyed three points of objection to measures taken by the Chinese maritime security patrol, which Jakarta believes protected illegal fishing activities in Indonesian waters.

In the first point, the Indonesian government protested the Chinese maritime security vessels, which contravened Indonesia’s sovereignty and jurisdiction over its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and continental shelf areas.

Second, Indonesia protested violations over law enforcement measures by Chinese authorities in the EEZ and continental shelf areas. Third, the Indonesian government protested violations committed by the Chinese maritime security boats against the sovereignty of Indonesia’s maritime territories.

As previously reported, two Chinese vessels, namely fishing vessel MV Kway Fey and a coast guard vessel, were involved in an incident with an Indonesian patrol boat at around 2:15 p.m. local time on Saturday.

The incident began when the Indonesian patrol captured the MV Kway Fey in Natuna waters. The Chinese vessel was allegedly fishing illegally in Indonesia’s ZEE.

The KP Hiu 11 patrol boat approached the fishing vessel and apprehended eight of its crew. The patrol officers were about to escort the MV Kway Fey from the scene when a Chinese coast guard boat approached and hit the fishing vessel. It was suspected that this was an attempt to prevent Indonesian authorities from confiscating the Chinese fishing vessel.

To avoid a conflict, the Indonesian patrol boat officers left the Kway Fey and returned to the KP Hiu 11 command with the eight arrested crewmembers from the fishing vessel.

Mariah Carey cancels Brussels show, citing security

0

New York – Pop diva Mariah Carey on Friday canceled a show in Brussels, saying she was concerned for security after twin suicide bombings there left 31 people dead.

“I love my fans in Brussels and at this time I am being advised to cancel my show for the safety of my fans, my band, crew and everyone involved with the tour,” the US superstar said in a statement on Twitter.

“I hope to see you soon and send my prayers and eternal love, laughter and light to my Lambs,” she said, using the nickname of her fans.

Carey, who recently began her tour of Europe in Britain, had been scheduled to sing Sunday at the Forest National arena near Brussels.

The move came even though the venue earlier said that all concerts would go ahead – with tight security – despite Tuesday’s suicide attacks.

“Guests are asked to come early and not bring any luggage, backpacks or large handbags, to respond to any requests of security services and to stay alert,” it said in a message on its website.

Veteran French rocker Johnny Hallyday is going ahead with concerts Saturday and Sunday in Brussels at the separate Palais 12, according to the venue.

But a number of major performers such as U2 and Foo Fighters canceled or delayed shows in Paris after the November 13 attacks there that killed 130 people.

The targets in the French capital included the Bataclan music venue where 90 people were killed during a concert by US rockers Eagles of Death Metal.

Belgium is still hunting for suspects in the suicide attacks at the Brussels airport and a metro station. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the assault, which also wounded 300 people.

Carey, known for her five-octave voice, is one of the best-selling artists of the 1990s with hits such as “One Sweet Day, “Hero,” “Someday” and “Emotions.”

She is filming her latest tour for use in an upcoming reality television series.

Thousands of injuries, mishaps at Chinese marathon prompt alarm

0

As China’s economy develops, authorities are racing ahead with their efforts to promote long-distance running – but a calamitous marathon in south China has raised questions over whether Beijing is pushing forward at too quick a pace.

Thousands of people were injured while running a marathon on Sunday in Qingyuan, a city of some 3.7 million people in south China’s Guangdong province.

According to local newspaper Qingyuan Daily, medical workers performed first aid on participants more than 12,000 times, treating 10,000 muscle spasms and 1,700 sprains. Ambulances were called in 23 times and 17 people were hospitalised, including five in critical condition, the newspaper reported.

A spokeswoman for the Qingyuan health bureau confirmed the statistics to China Real Time.

She wasn’t able to give a figure for the total number of people injured but said it is likely less than 12,000, as each individual could have received more than one instance of treatment.

In the case of the Qingyuan marathon, the organizers’ lack of experience was also on display when it came to the gift bags given to runners. According to local media, organizers gave runners bars of grape-scented soap, which many participants mistook for energy bars and attempted to eat.

Photos posted online by race participants show the packages of soap were decorated with an image of succulent grapes, along with the words “fruity soap” and “extra moisturizer” written in English. There was no Chinese-language explanation on the package, which may have contributed to the confusion, many online commenters lamented.

The proliferation of events is part of an ambitious programme rolled out in 2014 by China’s state council, or cabinet, with the goal of boosting the country’s sports economy to a value of 5 trillion yuan by 2025-a 15-fold increase.

Local governments like to host marathons because they can bring cities prestige as well as tourist dollars and official funding, experts say.
