Ang Mo Kio lift up and running after malfunctioning brakes fixed

0

SINGAPORE – Residents at Block 317 Ang Mo Kio Street 31 can now use all of their lifts again after one had been suspended for weeks after malfunctioning.

An Indonesian maid who was riding Lift A on March 7 probably had the shock of her life when the elevator suddenly shot up 17 floors where it stalled, and she was trapped for more than an hour before help came.

On March 8, the authorities swiftly suspended the lift and ordered a probe into the incident, which was not the first of such faulty lift incidents this year.

After 20 days, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) finally gave the go-ahead for Lift A at Ang Mo Kio Block 317 to resume operation on March 28.

Investigators found that the brakes of Lift A were “not functioning well”.

The authorised examiner appointed by Ang Mo Kio Town Council to inspect the lift concluded that the brakes “could not hold the lift car in a stationary position”.

The examiner assessed that this could be due to “jammed mechanical parts of the brakes, oily brake drum and worn-off brake liners”.

Sounds scary? Don’t worry, BCA said the town council’s lift contractor has completed the “required rectification works”.

The examiner had conducted another round of inspection and certified it was safe to use.

On top of that, BCA also inspected the lift and was “satisfied with the (examiner’s) findings and (therefore) allowed the lift to resume operation”.

As an additional measure, the examiner also recommended that Ang Mo Kio Town Council engages an authorised examiner to conduct brake tests on the incident lift every quarter for the rest of this year. This is to verify that the brakes are functioning normally, and would be “over and above” the brake test that the lift contractor is required to carry out during the monthly maintenance of the lift.

BCA said: “Lift owners, including the Town Councils, are required by law to engage registered lift contractors to maintain their lifts, and lift contractors should do so with due diligence.”

After the spate of lift mishaps, BCA has ramped up its efforts on checks of lifts around Singapore, reported The Straits Times.

DiCaprio visits Indonesian jungle to support environmentalists

0

Jakarta – Oscar-winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio has visited the Indonesian jungle to help protect a biodiverse area from deforestation.

Fresh from clinching his long-awaited first Oscar last month, DiCaprio spent the weekend in the Leuser ecosystem, on Indonesia’s main western island of Sumatra.

The actor, an ardent supporter of environmental causes, was pictured accompanied by local environmentalists and flanked by two critically endangered Sumatran elephants.

The elephants are among a dizzying array of rare animals who live in Leuser’s dense rainforests.

DiCaprio said on his Instagram account that his foundation, which supports numerous environmental projects, was backing local groups to establish a “mega-fauna sanctuary” in the area.

He described the area as “the last place on Earth where Sumatran orangutans, tigers, rhinos and elephants coexist in the wild”.

Local green activist Farwiza Fahan, who met DiCaprio on his visit, said the sanctuary was aimed at giving more protection to the area, but the plan was still in the early stages.

Like much of Indonesia’s rainforests, the area is under threat from the aggressive expansion of palm oil and pulp and paper plantations, while endangered animals are targeted by poachers and locals who view them as pests.

But the area faces an additional threat after authorities in the province of Aceh – which includes much of the Leuser ecosystem – pushed through a plan to open up new swathes of virgin forest for commercial exploitation and lay roads.

The central government in Jakarta, which must approve such locally made plans, has asked Aceh to revise it, but activists claim that local authorities are pushing ahead with it regardless.

DiCaprio, who attended the COP21 climate change talks in Paris last year, has been raising the alarm on global warming since 1998 when he founded the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation.

He won the best actor Oscar for his role in the “The Revenant”, a film about a 19th century fur trapper filmed under extreme winter conditions in Canada and Argentina.

Dirtiest female dorm room ever shocks Chinese netizens

0

She had time to film a video of her messy dormitory but no time to clean it.

A recent video of a girls’ dormitory in China that surfaced on social media is being referred to as “the dirtiest female dorm room ever” by Chinese media.

The video had been uploaded by one of the girls living in the dormitory, and while filming it she can be heard saying: “The room stinks so bad that two people have decided to leave.”

Numerous plastic bags and cardboard scraps were strewn all over the ground, leaving little to no floor space.

The room is filled with so much trash that the girls had to skirt around it in order to walk through the room.

With so much filth, we suspect that uninvited guests like pests are probably sharing the living space with the girls.

The pictures and video have come as a surprise to some netizens who believed that girls’ dormitories are far cleaner than those belonging to boys.

A person named Henry said: “Before I always believed that girls loved to be clean, but it was only when I went to university that I found out: female dorms are way dirtier than male ones.”
