ITE slashing incident: Teen attacker wins appeal against jail and caning
SINGAPORE – A student who slashed another teenager with a knife on an Institute of Technical Education (ITE) campus last year was given a chance to reform and avoid a jail term and caning.
On Thursday, his appeal against his initial sentence of 18 months’ jail and six strokes of the cane was successful. Instead, Muhammad Zuhairie Adely Zulkifli will now undergo reformative training.
In the appeal hearing, Zuhairie’s lawyer, Mr Benny Tan, had told the High Court that he had a complicated family background. Both his parents were regularly in and out of jail, and they would also often fight, Lianhe Wanbao reported.
When he was 12, Zuhairie was placed in the care of the Muhammadiyah Welfare Home.
However, the prosecution felt that reformative training was not enough due to the severity of the offence, arguing that Zuhairie had planned the attack and had hid the weapon in his locker.

The incident happened on March 10 last year at the ITE College West campus. Zuhairie slashed Ahmad Nurthaqif Sahed in front of students and teachers, leaving him with several cuts, a broken forearm and two broken fingers.
Their disagreement stemmed from a prior encounter three days earlier at Clarke Quay. Mr Nurthaqif was angered after Zuhairie had called his girlfriend “baby”, Lianhe Wanbao reported.
On the day of the incident, when Zuhairie saw Mr Nurthaqif at the campus, he retrieved the 35cm knife from his locker before attacking Mr Nurthaqif, who had been sitting with his girlfriend.
The attack was captured on video and was widely shared on social media.
Following the attack, Zuhairie fled, but was later arrested at his grandmother’s house.
Justice Chan Seng Onn, who presided over the appeal, said that Zuhairie should be given a chance to change as he is still young. He also told the teen to learn to manage his emotions better.
Zuhairie replied that he was deeply remorseful and promised that he would turn over a new leaf.

Former WWE professional wrestler Chyna found dead
LOS ANGELES – Chyna, the former WWE wrestler and reality TV star, was found dead in her L.A. home on Wednesday. She was 45.
The official cause of death is unknown. Chyna, whose real name is Joanie Laurer, was reportedly dead found in her Redondo Beach house. Her Facebook announced the news late Wednesday.
“It is with deep sadness to inform you today that we lost a true icon, a real life superhero. Joanie Laurer aka Chyna, the 9th wonder of the world has passed away. She will live forever in the memories of her millions of fans and all of us that loved her,” the post read.
Chyna appeared in several TV shows over the last two decades, including VH1’s “Surreal Life” and “Celebrity Rehab.” She also guest starred on “3rd Rock from the Sun” and “The Nick Cannon Show.” A larger-than-life figure, the wrestler and actress later posed for Playboy magazine before starring in several adult films, including “She-Hulk XXX.” She later moved to Japan to teach English.
“There’s a misconception out there in the media that I’ve become this monster,” she told Vice last year. “In the meantime, I’m just trying to get a job and live my life.”

Five-star Schooling named swimmer of the year in Big 12
Having already been honoured on a national level, the latest accolade Joseph Schooling earned from competing in the American collegiate system will come as little surprise.
The Singapore swimmer was named the Big 12 conference’s Swimmer of the Year in the post-season awards held on Tuesday afternoon at the conference headquarters in Irving, Texas.
He was honoured after a second stellar season, retaining his 100 and 200 yards butterfly titles in US Open record times at last month’s National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 1 swim finals. The sophomore also won three other golds at the NCAAs in the relays, helping to lift the Texas Longhorns to a second straight national title.
The Big 12 award, voted by coaches in the 10-school conference, comes on the back of another top award. At the conclusion of the meet, Schooling was named Swimmer of the Year by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America, tying former Bolles School team-mates Ryan Murphy and Caeleb Dressel for the award.
The swimmer could not be reached for comment yesterday, but it is undeniable that he is fast placing himself in good company.
The 20-year-old marked his freshman season in Texas last year by clinching the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year. This latest award has been won by the likes of breaststroke specialist Brendan Hansen, who took the award in 2003 and went on to clinch medals at three successive Olympics. Five-time Olympic medallist Ian Crocker then won it in 2004. Both Americans swam for the Texas Longhorns.
Said the Singapore Swimming Association’s vice-president (swimming) Joscelin Yeo: “Joseph is a world-class talent and has worked extremely hard to get to the level he is at.
“He’s the first Singaporean to win seven medals at the NCAAs and to be named Swimmer of the Year at the Big 12. Beating the world’s best swimmers at his age group for this award is one of the biggest achievements for a Team Singapore athlete, and one that young Singaporeans dream about.
“This is a big year for him, and we and the entire country will be supporting him at the Olympics. He is a massive role model for our youth and we look forward to seeing more Singaporeans strive to achieve their dreams and match his successes.”
Schooling, along with team-mate Quah Zheng Wen, are the only local swimmers to have confirmed their Olympic spots so far.
