SINGAPORE – With the by-election fever heating up in Bukit Batok SMC ahead of the polls, both Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) and People’s Action Party (PAP) will be holding their final rallies on Thursday (May 5).
The Police Elections Permits Office announced this afternoon that it has issued permits for both parties.
SDP party chief Dr Chee Soon Juan will be contesting in this by-election against PAP’s Mr Murali Pillai.
SDP will be holding its fourth rally on Thursday at the field along Bukit Batok Industrial Park A while PAP will be speaking at its second rally at the Bukit Gombak Stadium.
What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object? We might finally have the answer on May 6 when Singapore’s Angela Lee and Japan’s Mei Yamaguchi face off for the Women’s Atomweight World title at ONE Championship’s fighting extravaganza ‘Ascent to Power’.
For the unfamiliar, Angela is a rising star in Asia’s mixed martial arts (MMA) scene. She has strong roots in Singapore and is part of the elite Evolve MMA fight team. Angela’s combination of solid striking and grappling skills had proven to be a potent formula for success as she remains unbeaten so far in her MMA career.
Said Angela at a media luncheon on May 3:
“I felt very honoured and excited for the fight after finding out that I was going to be in the main event.
“I really appreciate all the media support and promotions behind me but I’m 100 per cent focused on the fight and that’s all I’m worried about right now”.
At only 19-years-old, you would think that Angela would snap under the pressure as the day of the fight approaches, especially since she is facing a much more experienced opponent. She however keeps a positive attitude towards her preparations.
“I personally have no problems with the intensity of the training as the fight draws closer since I have been training since I was very young”, said Angela. “To me, the toughest part of preparing for competition is the diet since I have to make sure that my weight is on point by eating clean regularly”.
Since Angela has won all of her fights via submission, one would wonder if she is trying for a more daring finish this time round.
“I’m just looking to finish the fight as quick as possible whether that is via knockout, technical knockout (TKO) or submission. We will just have to wait and see on Friday night.”
The People’s Action Party will hold its rally at Bukit Gombak Stadium, while the Singapore Democratic Party will have its rally at the field along Bukit Batok Industrial Park A.
The programmes will run from three to nine months, covering areas of specialisation such as cybersecurity, software development and network administration.

An American airman and a teammate have been praised as heroes for helping to save the lives of a Nigerian woman and three of her very young children from a burning building in South Korea.
When he saw the fire while walking to an eatery for dinner on Friday (April 29), US Air Force Master Sergeant Daniel Raimondo and a colleague quickly decided to get some blankets from a nearby store.
He then rallied people in the street to help them hold the blankets while persuading the woman to throw her three kids down from their fourth-storey apartment, above a burning unit. He managed to convince the woman to do so after her initial reluctance as her children were very young – aged 1, 3 and 4.
The incident happened in Pyeongtaek, outside a US airbase.

One of his teammates, Dan Frost, put up a video on his Facebook page of the harrowing escape, as the crowd below egged the woman on.
The dramatic footage shows the mother dangling her children, one by one, out of the window and dropping them to the screaming crowd below, as plumes of black smoke billowed relentlessly from the burning flat on the second floor.
Raimondo (in photo below) told CNN he repeatedly begged the mother: “Please just throw the baby down!
“I remember her screaming (at) the baby, ‘I love you, I love you. …’ Next thing you know she dropped the baby.”
When it was the mother’s turn to jump, thick smoke had already engulfed the exterior of the building.
He said the woman fell more heavily than the children did, but someone had the foresight to put cushions underneath the blanket.
His action was praised by netizens.
Said Facebook user Hannah VonTana: “Thank you MSgt Raimondo! You are a true American Hero!”
