Polling stations for Bukit Batok by-election to open from 8am on May 7
SINGAPORE – Polling Day for the upcoming Bukit Batok by-election will fall on Saturday (May 7). Polling stations will be open from 8am to 8pm.
Voters are reminded to bring their original NRIC or passport and poll card to the stations. No ballot papers will be issued after 8pm.
The Cooling-off Day will fall on Friday (May 6) – a day before Polling Day.
Cooling-off Day is when campaigning by candidates is not allowed and new election advertising must not be published or displayed.
According to a statement by the Elections Department, this 24-hour silence period is to allow for voters to “reflect rationally on various issues raised at an election before going to the polls”.
The Bukit Batok single-member constituency (SMC) is being contested by People’s Action Party’s Murali Pillai and Singapore Democratic Party’s (SDP) Chee Soon Juan.
The statement also added that the activities that are banned on Cooling-off Day and Polling Day include canvassing and visiting the homes and workplaces of voters, as well as holding election meetings and knowingly displaying any election advertising on vehicles or buildings in the SMC.

Local photographer's drone shots show a bird's eye view of Singapore
SINGAPORE – Talk about having a different perspective.
A local photographer, identified online as Joel Chia, has been gaining attention recently for his bird’s eye view photos of Singapore.
The breathtaking aerial shots can be viewed on his “Idroneman” Instagram and Facebook pages.
The shots, captured with the use of drones, features views of various familiar landmarks from the sky, including VivoCity shopping mall, the National Stadium, the Esplanade, and Suntec City’s Fountain of Wealth.
There are also a number of photos of the photographer’s alma mater, Nanyang Polytechnic.
Other images capture everyday scenes of life, such as swimmers at public pools, people playing tennis or cars on the roads. Many of the photos also feature large swathes of green, showing Singapore’s well-earned reputation as a “garden city”.

Janet Jackson expecting first child at 49: Report
NEW YORK – Pop superstar Janet Jackson is expecting her first child at age 49, reports said Wednesday.
The younger sister of Michael Jackson stunned funs last month by halting a global tour and saying that she and her husband Wissam Al Mana were “planning our family.”
Jackson, who turns 50 on May 16, did not offer further details at the time. But the celebrity news sites ET and E! News both said that she was pregnant.
E! News, quoting an unnamed source, said that she was in her second trimester and had been seeing a fertility specialist for some time.
Natural pregnancies are less common for women when they enter their late 40s, but in vitro fertilizations can extend the age range.
A representative for Jackson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
But in perhaps a wink of confirmation, Jackson earlier Wednesday posted on social media a snippet of her dancing with the hashtag #DammnBaby.
Jackson is often discreet in her personal life and did not immediately publicize her 2012 marriage to Al Mana, a Qatari businessman.
Michael Jackson had three children after frequently reported efforts to try to start a family.
He had two children with Debbie Rowe, who worked at his dermatologist’s office and married him, and a third through an undisclosed surrogate.

Shanmugam: We could have been a target
The detentions of eight radicalised Bangladeshi men who were planning to stage attacks back home were a reminder of a wave of radicalisation sweeping through the world and this region, noted Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam yesterday.
“We could have been a target because they were prepared to attack anywhere. If they had been directed to attack in Singapore, they would have attacked in Singapore. So it shows the seriousness,” he said.

He added that security agencies here had done well to identify these men and move in quickly.
Mr Shanmugam was speaking to the media on the sidelines of a closed-door forum on religious extremism at Temasek Polytechnic.
He also hit back at comments made this morning by Singapore Democratic Party chief Chee Soon Juan, who had previously called for the Internal Security Act to be abolished.

Dr Chee yesterday sidestepped questions on the Act but said the terror problem in Singapore was an immigration issue.
“I think this shows a lack of understanding of the nature of the problem,” said Mr Shanmugam, pointing out that hundreds have been arrested in the region for radicalisation, including Singaporeans in Singapore.
“So what does Dr Chee suggest? That we say no to all foreign workers? Or we say no to all foreign workers who are Muslim? I think he should clarify,” he added.
He pointed out that there were “tens of thousands of Bangladeshi workers” here who work in construction and as cleaners in town councils.
“So what do we do? Send them all back? Who is going to do their jobs? And also in the construction sector, (if) you send them back, who suffers? Singaporeans will lose their jobs too,” added Mr Shanmugam.
These matters, he said, “require careful consideration, proper thought and we should all just avoid taking cheap shots at political opportunism”.
