Sin Boon Ann to step in as Second Advisor at Tampines GRO while Heng recovers
SINGAPORE – Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Tampines Central Sin Boon Ann will be joining the Tampines Central Grassroots Organisation (GRO) as Second Advisor while Heng Swee Keat recovers from a stroke.
Mr Sin and the other Tampines GRC MPs made the announcement on Facebook on Saturday (May 14) night.
“I will be stepping up as Second Advisor to Tampines Central Grassroots Organisation while Mr Heng is recovering from his stroke,” Mr Sin wrote.
“While our prayers and thoughts for a speedy recovery are with him at this time, our utmost priority must surely be the welfare and well being of the residents. There should not be any disruption in attending to their needs,” he added.
Tampines GRC MPs Mr Baey Yam Keng, Mr Masagos Zulkifli, Mr Desmond Choo and Ms Cheng Li Hui said in a joint letter that Mr Sin had contacted the team after hearing of Mr Heng’s stroke and offered to help.
“Given Mr Sin’s experience and deep bonds with the grassroots organisations in the division, we thought it would be useful to appoint him as 2nd Adviser to the GROs,” they said in the letter.
Mr Sin will start working as Second Advisor from Monday (May 16).

50 years after Mao, the cult of Xi gains ground in China
BEIJING – The blossoming personality cult around Chinese President Xi Jinping is casting a shadow over the country’s social and economic activities, invoking memories of the decade-long chaos under Mao Zedong’s Cultural Revolution that began 50 years ago.

Officials in Chongqing are working hard to increase freight rail shipments passing through the inland Chinese city. The goal is to establish one daily round trip from the city directly to Europe.
“Actual demand for shipments is plunging due to the economic slowdown in Europe,” an industry source said. Yet the seemingly unprofitable project forges on, thanks to Xi.
Xi visited Germany’s Duisburg port, the end point of a cargo rail link from Chongqing, in March 2014, where he said that China and Germany must join hands in creating an economic belt. His visit demonstrated the importance of railroads to his “One Belt, One Road” initiative, designed to create a massive economic zone along historic Silk Road routes.
Beijing appears preoccupied with advancing Xi’s pet projects, with no leeway for considering cutbacks. Some government officials voice concerns about the country’s finances, since almost any project linked to the One Belt, One Road initiative is given funding.

Football: FIFA audit chief Scala quits over threat to reforms
The head of FIFA’s independent audit committee Domenico Scala quit Saturday in protest at what he called attacks on reforms of the scandal-tainted world football governing body by its leadership.
Scala said he was “consternated” by a FIFA Council move to control the nomination of members of independent oversight bodies such as its ethics committee and audit and compliance committee.
The Swiss official has played a key role in pushing through reforms after the scandals that claimed the heads of former FIFA president Sepp Blatter and UEFA president Michel Platini.
“It will henceforth be possible for the council to impede investigations against single members at any time, by dismissing the responsible committee members or by keeping them acquiescent through the threat of a dismissal,” Scala warned.
He said the committees had been “deprived of their independence and are in danger of becoming auxiliary agents of those whom they should actually supervise.” Scala said he was “consternated about this decision, because it undermines a central pillar of the good governance of FIFA and it destroys a substantial achievement of the reforms.” Scala said he was resigning immediately. FIFA, now under the presidency of Gianni Infantino who has threatened a new era of transparency, made no immediate comment.
