Showers to bring relief from warm weather in May: NEA
SINGAPORE – The rest of May is expected to be slightly cooler than it has been, the National Environment Agency (NEA) said on Monday (May 16).
“The warm conditions experienced in the first fortnight of May 2016 can still be expected on a few days in the second half of May 2016,” NEA added.
But the temperature will be moderated by showers on most days.
In the next fortnight, short thundery showers are forecast for the late morning and afternoon, on six to eight days.
Thundery showers with gusty winds due to Sumatra squalls can be expected in the morning on one or two days.
For the rest of May, the daily maximum temperatures are forecast to range between 33 deg C and 34 deg C on most days, and could reach a high of around 35 deg C on a few days.
The first 11 days of May saw temperatures between 35 deg C and 36.1 deg C. The highest temperature was recorded at Seletar on May 6.
For the past four days, the showers that fell over many parts of the island brought some relief to the warm conditions. The highest daily maximum temperature ranged between 31.8 deg C and 34.7 deg C.
Showers on May 11 were particularly heavy with the highest daily rainfall of 99.8mm recorded.
As of May 15, the daily mean temperature recorded at the Changi climate station was 29.6 deg C, which is 1.3° deg C above the long-term average for May.
The rainfall for May is expected to be average, NEA added.

Drugs worth more than $282,000 seized from lorry at Woodlands Checkpoint
SINGAPORE – A haul of drugs worth more than $282,000 were seized by authorities, after an inspection of a lorry at Woodlands Checkpoint on Monday (May 16).
In a joint statement on Tuesday (May 17), the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) said that a Malaysia-registered lorry was stopped for checks when it arrived at the checkpoint at about 4.50am.
The lorry had been carrying a consignment of pails and cans as well as shield anchors, but ICA officers also found drugs concealed in the compartment behind the lorry’s passenger seat.
The drugs seized comprised about 2.78kg of heroin and 480g of ‘Ice’.
Two Malaysian men, aged 33 and 27, were also arrested and subsequently referred to CNB.
According to the Misuse of Drugs Act, trafficking of more than 15g of pure heroin, which is enough to feed the addiction of 180 abusers for a week, is punishable by death. The Act also provides for the death penalty if the amount of methamphetamine trafficked exceeds 250g.

40 nabbed after police crackdown on public entertainment outlets
SINGAPORE – A total of 40 people have been arrested after a crack down on public entertainment outlets over the weekend.
In a statement on Tuesday (May 17), the police said that a total of 300 people were checked at 36 public entertainment outlets in a series of enforcement operations held between May 13 and May 15.
The outlets are located at Jalan Besar, Kitchener Road, Foch Road, Dalhousie Lane, Jalan Sultan, Beack Road, Middle Road, Duxton Road and New Bridge Road.
40 people, aged between 19 and 52, were arrested for criminal and employment-related offences. Actions were also taken against 14 public entertainment outlets for infringing licensing conditions.
The police said that the operations were part of ongoing enforcement efforts against crime and licensing infringements at public entertainment outlets.
Between January and May this year, enforcement operations were conducted against errant massage parlours in Chinatown, Bugis, Little India, Beach Road, Lavender Street, Jalan Sultan, Jalan Besar, North Bridge Road, South Bridge Road and Coleman Street.
According to the police, seven public entertainment outlet directors and their licensees, and 11 massage parlour operators will be charged for offences relating to the Public Entertainment and Meeting Act and the Massage Establishments Act.
