Olympics: IOC say 31 athletes to miss Rio after Beijing re-tests
LONDON – Thirty one athletes from six sports could be banned from this year’s Rio de Janeiro Olympics after 454 doping samples were re-tested from the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the IOC said on Tuesday.
A statement from the International Olympic Committee said its Executive Board had stepped up the fight against drugs cheats and the re-tests had been carried out in conjunction with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and international federations.
It said the re-tests were focused on athletes who could potentially take part in the Rio Games this year.
Twelve national Olympic associations would be informed in the coming days, the IOC said.
Another 250 samples would be re-tested from the London 2012 Olympics. “The aim is to stop any drugs cheats coming to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro,” the IOC said.

Man wins $8.04m in May 16 Toto draw, 2nd biggest sum won by a single person
SINGAPORE – A lucky punter who didn’t even bother choosing his own numbers walked away with over $8 million when he emerged as the sole winner of the top prize of the Toto draw on Monday (May 16).
Chinese evening daily Lianhe Wanbao reported that the prize totalling $8,045,163 was the second biggest ever sum won by a single person.
The winning numbers were 1, 10, 24, 26, 36, and 47, while the additional number was 4.
The winning ticket was sold at Kim Chwee Trading, which is located at Block 256, Jurong East Street 24.
According to Wanbao, the winner placed a bet of $1, and he did not even choose the numbers himself, instead leaving it to a computer to pick all six numbers.
A total of eight people won the Group 2 share amount prize of $91,209.
In February this year, one lucky person who bought a ticket in Hougang won $9.5 million, the largest amount to be taken home by a single person.
The next Toto draw will be held on Thursday (May 19), and the jackpot is estimated to be about $1 million.

First man in Singapore initially diagnosed with Zika discharged from hospital
SINGAPORE – A 48-year-old man who was the first person to initially be diagnosed with the Zika virus in Singapore has been discharged from hospital.
According to a joint statement by the Ministry of Health and National Environment Agency (NEA), the Permanent Resident was discharged from Tan Tock Seng Hospital on Tuesday (May 17) afternoon.
The statement added that the man, who lives in Watten Estate in Bukit Timah, tested negative for the Zika virus and that he will not transmit the virus even if he was bitten by the Aedes mosquito.
His family members have also not reported any symptoms of the virus.
On May 12, it was reported that the man was hospitalised at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital after developing a fever and rash.
He travelled to Sao Paulo, Brazil, between March 27 and May 7 and tested positive for Zika virus at that time.
NEA has advised residents in the Watten Estate area to continue to monitor their health and seek medical attention if unwell, especially if they develop symptoms such as fever and rash.
Those who are unwell should also inform their doctors of the location of their residence.
