Philippine troops kill 54 Islamist militants in the south
MANILA – Philippine security forces killed 54 Islamist militants linked to the Jemaah Islamiah group in a week-long air and ground offensive in the country’s south, an army spokesman said on Monday.
The fighting took place near the stronghold of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, which signed a peace deal with the government in 2014 to end 45 years of conflict that killed 120,000 people and stunted growth in the resource-rich areas.
Major Filemon Tan said two soldiers were killed and nine wounded after air force planes dropped bombs on the militants’positions and ground troops pounded them with artillery fire, in the town of Butig in Lanao del Sur, from Tuesday.
“The artillery fire did more damage than the bombs,” Tan added.
“Our troops saw the enemies fall and, based on estimates, we killed 54. They beheaded two sawmill workers and toppled a ppwer line in the area.”
The fighting has displaced about 2,000 people from five villages in Butig, regional officials said.
About a decade ago, the MILF had expelled Jemaah Islamiah members from the area in preparation for peace talks brokered by Malaysia, and avoid getting a “terrorist” tag from the US State Department.
The military said Jemaah Islamiah-linked militants returned to the area when a law to grant autonomy to Muslim areas, under the government deal with the MILF, failed to pass in Congress.
President-elect Rodrigo Duterte has promised to pursue peace with Muslim rebels, proposing a new federal scheme to grant more political and economic powers to Muslim-dominated areas in the south.

'I don't know what I sign', Messi told judge in fraud case: Report
BARCELONA – Argentina star Lionel Messi, who is due to go on trial in Barcelona for alleged tax fraud, told a judge that he never looks at the contracts he signs, the El Periodico daily said Monday.
The newspaper got access to Messi’s September 2013 statement to a judge and published extracts just a day before the five-time World Player of the Year and his father stand trial.
“I signed things, but I never look at the contracts. I don’t know what I sign,” he allegedly said.
Messi and his father, Jorge Horacio Messi, are accused of using a chain of fake companies in Belize and Uruguay to avoid paying taxes on 4.16 million euros (S$6.4 million) of Messi’s income earned through the sale of his image rights from 2007-09.
They have been charged with three counts of tax fraud.
According to the alleged statement published by the Barcelona daily, the judge showed him several sponsorship contracts that he signed, but he did not remember them.
“This is something that my dad manages. And I trust him. I devote myself to playing football,” he reportedly said.
“I do what he tells me to.” Spanish prosecutors are seeking a jail sentence of 22-and-a-half months for Messi and his father if they are found guilty, plus fines equivalent to the amount that was allegedly defrauded.
But any such sentence would likely be suspended as is common in Spain for first offences carrying a sentence of less than two years.

Beerfest Asia 2016 returns with AsiaOne as official online media partner
SINGAPORE – Asia’s largest beer festival returns for its 8th edition to offer beer enthusiasts the chance to savour a mind-boggling variety of over 500 beers. The four-day Beerfest Asia 2016 is organised by Beerfest Asia Pte Ltd, owned by Sphere Exhibits Pte Ltd (Sphere Exhibits), and AsiaOne is the official online media partner. This year’s event will be held from 16 to 19 June 2016 and will see the return of the Asia Beer Awards, with an international panel of industry experts recognising Asia’s favourite beers. Visitors can expect the largest selection of international beers ever at Beerfest Asia 2016 and a large number of new beers making their debut in Singapore.
