Verbally abused deaf-mute cleaner intends to quit job this month
SINGAPORE – The deaf and mute cleaner who was berated by a woman at the Jem foodcourt is planning to quit his job this month.
The cleaner, Mr Png Lye Heng, 64, indicated to The Straits Times on Monday (June 6) that he wanted to leave because of the incident.
To communicate with reporters who interviewed him, he gestured “yes” or “no” to questions written in Chinese on a piece of paper.
When reporters asked him in writing if he intended to leave his job, he pointed to the response “yes”.
The incident at the Jurong shopping mall caught the public eye over the weekend. A video, posted by Facebook user Euphemia Lee showed a woman lashing out at a manager of the company providing cleaning services to the Jurong shopping mall foodcourt.

She can be heard berating the manager, who wanted to be known only as Steven: “If he’s (the cleaner) deaf, ask him don’t work, go home and sleep.
“Just ask the Government to feed him, go and be a beggar! I don’t care, he took my food!”
Mr Png said he has been “slightly hurt” by the scolding but had forgiven the woman, who was identified as by The New Paper as Ms Fong. He also said he had enjoyed working at the food court and did not find it difficult to work there.
Steven, the 51-year-old manager, told The Straits Times that Mr Png had not informed him of his intention to leave later this month, but that he had heard about it from the man’s colleagues. He added that Mr Png had been working at the foodcourt for about a year, and that in the past few days, customers had recognised Mr Png and gestured at him.
The manager said Mr Png was patient with foodcourt customers. He added that he had asked him if he wanted to wear a badge indicating his disability but he turned down the suggestion.

Mammoth Korean culture theme park to be built
South Korean conglomerate CJ group has begun the construction of a huge amusement park in a bid to dazzle visitors with a panoply of attractions based on South Korea’s culture and history.
A consortium led by CJ will spend 1.4 trillion won (S$1.6 billion) to build the entertainment complex, which includes a hotel and performance hall, in the city of Goyang, a suburb of Seoul in Gyeonggi Province. The group is hoping the broad popularity of K-pop in Asia, a vast and fast-growing market for musical entertainment, will help the new theme park attract 5 million visitors annually when it opens in 2017.
Dubbed “K-Culture Valley,” the park will occupy some 300,000 sq. meters, the equivalent of 46 football fields.
The project is fully backed by the Korean government, which is seeking to revitalise a dented tourist industry, as indicated by the presence of President Park Geun-hye at a groundbreaking ceremony held on May 20. At the event, Park stressed the important role of culture and creative content in driving the country’s future economic growth.
The complex will be composed of six zones, with each one featuring specific era in the history of Korean culture. It will also boast an auditorium equipped with a new movie-presentation technology called 4DX, which has been developed by a CJ group unit to enhance the film-viewing experience with environmental effects, such as moving seats, scents, fog and even simulated rain.

Toto creates another 2 millionaires; they get $3.9m each
SINGAPORE – Less than a month after a man won $8.04 million in a Toto draw, Toto has made another two people millionaires.
In tonight’s (June 6) draw, the top prize of $7,887,444 was shared by two individuals, who will each take home $3,943,722.
One of the winning tickets, a System 7 entry, was bought from Suntec City Mall’s outlet. The other, an Ordinary entry, was sold at Block 574 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10.
Neither of these outlets was among the “lucky outlets” that Shin Min Daily News listed in their report today.
The winning numbers are 2, 7, 12, 19, 29 and 36. The additional number is 20.
The Group 2 prize was won by 12 people, who each take home $59,149.
