Police investigating car caught on video slamming into motorcycle on AYE

0

SINGAPORE – The police are investigating an apparent hit-and-run incident involving a car and a motorcycle along the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) on Wednesday (June 15).

A video of the incident was posted on Facebook by Zufar Khan Ismail Khan on Thursday, and has since been viewed over 144,000 times.

It was also shared by road safety community page Roads.sg.

In the 30-second video, the car, a white Toyota Camry, was seen braking repeatedly and slowing down on the middle lane of the expressway.

When a motorcycle pulled up on its right hand side, the Camry then made a move towards it but stopped just before hitting it, causing the biker and his pillion rider to both look up towards the car.

But less than five seconds later, the car again moved towards the motorcycle and this time slammed into it, knocking both the motocyclist and the pillion rider onto the road.

The Camry then quickly sped away.

Chinese evening daily Lianhe Wanbao reported that according to one netizen, the car had begun playing the “braking game” (hitting the brakes repeatedly) from Clementi Avenue 6.

Users on Facebook also pointed out that the same vehicle had previously been filmed recklessly switching lanes and intentionally braking while driving on an expressway.

According to The Straits Times, both the motorcyclist and the pillion rider sustained injuries. They went to nearby National University Hospital for treatment, before lodging a police report.

In a statement, the police confirmed that investigations into the incident are ongoing.

The police also advised members of the public who uploaded the videos to lodge a police report at any Neighbourhood Police Centre, or Police Post, or online.

They added that anyone with additional information regarding the incident can provide them to the traffic police at SPF_Feedback_TP@spf.gov.sg.

Thai woman sings to elephants to help them sleep

0

The founder of Chiang Mai’s Elephant Nature Park (ENP), Sangduen Chailert, likes to sing lullabies to the animals to put them to sleep.

Sangduen said she started singing to a baby elephant that was difficult to handle six years ago. After a while, she realised her songs were calming it down and made it easier to approach.

She then tried it out with other animals and realised the singing relaxed them so much it put them to sleep. While 7-year-old elephant Fah Mai took a nap after a lullaby, three-year-old Dok Mai climbed on top of her.

Sangduen said Dok Mai is an elephant prone to jealousy, and that the others all have their own characters.

“Their behaviour is not different from humans. From my experience, some elephants are very shy, some are funny, some are serious. There are various personalities that I have seen, like one who has a loud voice, or they argue because they are jealous,” she said.

Although Fah Mai was born in the sanctuary, she’s one of a few. Many of the elephants at ENP were abused and then rescued.

Sangduen said animal abuse stemmed from fear.

“We are afraid of big animals. This is the reason why humans build their walls to protect themselves from what they are afraid of. And from the way we try to protect ourselves, we come into conflict with animals. Our fear is of the obstacle (to having a good relationship with animals),” Sangduen added.

ENP is a 280-acre sanctuary, home to more than 70 elephants.

Woman sent to hospital after fire at Jurong East condo

0

SINGAPORE – A woman was hurt after a fire broke out at a condominium unit in Jurong East on Thursday (June 16).

The woman, who is in her 30s, sustained superficial burns on her face from the fire and was conveyed to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital for treatment.

In a statement, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that it was alerted to a fire at the Parc Oasis condominium along 37 Jurong East Avenue 1 at about 10pm.

The fire started in a bedroom in a 12th-storey unit at the condo.

Two fire bikes, two fire engines, one red rhino, an ambulance and another support vehicle was dispatched to the scene.

There, SCDF officers used a water jet and two compressed air foam backpacks to put out the fire.

Around 40 residents at the condo had also been evacuated from the premises prior to SCDF’s arrival.

According to The Straits Times, preliminary investigations found that the fire was caused by a lit candle.
