Rains or not, India faces drinking water crisis

0

GANGNAULI , India, – As large swathes of drought-devastated India desperately wait for the monsoon rains to arrive, one village in the dry, hot north is flush with water.

But this farming area’s bountiful water supplies are feared contaminated with heavy metals, underscoring the profound challenges facing the world’s second most populous nation.

From toxic pollution of rivers and lakes to contamination of groundwater supplies, together with chronic shortages in drought-hit districts, India’s water challenges are acute.

In Gangnauli village, residents suspect their groundwater has been polluted by waste from local industries.

“The children complain of stomach pains and skin problems and I fear for their health,” Divya Rathi says as she watches her daughter play with buckets of water in her yard in Gangnauli in Uttar Pradesh state.

“We need the government to do something about this,” said the 25-year-old, adding she could not afford the expensive water purifiers used by wealthier households.

More than 130 million people live in areas of India where groundwater supplies are contaminated with at least one dangerous pollutant such as arsenic or nitrate, according to the World Resources Institute.

Its analysis shows more than 20 million live in districts where supplies contain at least three pollutants exceeding safe limits.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has pledged billions of dollars to clean up the filthy holy Ganges river, while efforts are also under way to stop raw sewage and industrial waste spewing into India’s waterways.

But researcher Sushmita Sengupta warned it could be too late in some areas where groundwater has long been mismanaged.

“Once the groundwater is contaminated it’s an almost irreversible process. Once it’s destroyed it’s lost forever,” said Sengupta, of the Delhi-based Centre for Science and Environment.

Parts of India are anxiously waiting for the annual monsoon currently sweeping across the country to provide relief to 330 million farmers and others.

But experts say the torrential rains will not solve India’s water problems unless much more is done to manage supplies.

Rajendra Singh, dubbed the Water Man of India, said rains will fail to replenish the water table in many areas because unchecked urbanisation has destroyed wetlands and other natural recharge spots.

“It will just be a flash flood,” said Singh, who has called for a ban on groundwater extraction for all purposes other than for drinking to allow aquifers a chance to recover.

“There is not enough drinkable water for the Indian people. Without water security there is nothing,” said Singh, who last year won the Stockholm Water Prize for his work to boost supplies in villages in the desert state of Rajasthan.

In Gangnauli, authorities have painted a red stripe on communal handpumps to warn residents after testing found groundwater was contaminated.

India’s environment court, the National Green Tribunal, ordered handpumps in the district be sealed, and raised concerns about the health of residents drinking from them.

Many instead draw water from borewells installed in their backyards. But they fear this groundwater is also contaminated by polluted rivers which have seeped into the water table.

“There is poison in the water,” said farmer Dhramveer Singh, 50, who blames his son’s severe bone deformities on the water.

District magistrate Hriday Shankar Tiwari said the state government has acted to supply villagers with alternate supplies — including via water tanks and pipelines whose supplies are sourced from clean water deeper underground.

“We have also been sensitising villagers about the hazards of consuming contaminated water,” Tiwari told AFP, although he casts doubt on concerns residents are falling ill.

Village head Dharmendra Rathi said up to half of its 5,000 residents now received piped water, a situation he said was “way better than what it used to be”.

But he said the pollution remained a problem, with factory waste from neighbouring districts still discharged into the rivers.

Thirty Vietnamese fishermen punished in Australia

0

SYDNEY – Thirty Vietnamese found illegally fishing in Australian waters were Tuesday handed suspended jail sentences and had their boats destroyed in what authorities said was a strong deterrent message.

The crew were from two boats caught illegally fishing in a Coral Sea marine reserve off Australia’s north coast on June 2, with diving gear and six tonnes of sea cucumber — a delicacy in countries such as China — found on board.

The fishermen all pleaded guilty in a Darwin court to breaking Australian fisheries and environmental laws.

Their penalties included suspended jail sentences ranging from two months for the crew to five and seven months for the masters of the vessels.

They were also issued good behaviour bonds ranging from two to three years, with up to Aus$2,000 (S$2003) to pay if they are breached.

“Illegal fishing threatens the economic viability and sustainability of Australia’s well managed marine resources,” said Australian Fisheries Management Authority general manager Peter Venslovas.

“The convictions and destruction of the vessels are a good result and will send a very strong message to all those considering illegally fishing in Australian waters.”

The case came on the same day a Papua New Guinean boat was apprehended for suspected illegal fishing in Australian waters, allegedly carrying sea cucumber and two shark fins.

According to a United Nations Development Program report this month, up to 26 million tonnes of fish is caught illegally each year.

Stepped up surveillance by Australia has seen the amount of illegal fishing fall from highs of 367 boats caught a decade ago to just 17 so far in the 2015-2016 financial year, government data shows.

Taiwan soldiers torture and kill dog on base

0

TAIPEI – Taiwan’s military on Monday apologised and imposed punishments on a group of soldiers after a viral video footage showed that they had allegedly tortured a dog to death.

In an emergency press conference held on Monday night, Navy Command Headquarters Commander Admiral Huang Shu-kuang issued the apology, saying that he accepted full responsibility for the incident that marred the military’s image.

Huang said that the three soldiers, who have all admitted that they were responsible for the killing of the dog, will be sent to legal authorities to be punished in accordance with the Animal Protection Act.

Administrative punishments were also handed out to the three as well as their supervisors, Huang said.

As an animal lover, Huang said he felt “deeply ashamed” of the “unacceptable” behaviour of these soldiers.

But he stressed that their inappropriate behaviour reflected only the actions of individuals.

According to the military, the three soldiers allegedly responsible for the death of the dog are members of the Marine Corps Air Defence Group stationed at Kaohsiung’s Shoushan area.

Dog was a months-old puppy

Vice-Admiral Tsai Hong-tu of the Navy Command Headquarters told the same press conference that the incident occurred on June 24 and originated with an order from a squad leader of the group, surnamed Chen, who asked a soldier surnamed Chang to take care of the stray dog after it was found in their unit.

Chang then worked with another solider surnamed Hu to take the dog to a nearby beach before hanging it to death.

As punishment, Tsai said Chen and Chang were each given a major demerit and will be asked to discharge from their service dishonorably as soon as possible. Chang was given another demerit for filming the whole incident with his cellphone. Hu was given a demerit and will be grounded for 10 days.

These soldiers’ six supervisors were also given demerits for failing to supervise their behaviours, Tsai said.

The incident was made public by a Kaohsiung city councilor on Sunday after Councilor Chen Hsin-yu posted the video clip online.

The 80-second film shows a white dog being strangled by an iron chain on its neck by a harbour. The soldiers were recorded in the film laughing while torturing the dog to its death.

(Warning: Graphic scene)

Councilor Chen later said the soldiers responsible for the deed are military police stationed at the Air Defence Group based in Kaohsiung.

She said the dog was a few-months-old puppy and that the soldiers who killed the dog should be harshly punished for the act of brutality.

The video was going viral on the internet with many netizens criticising the lack of discipline and brutality.

Soldier shot another dog with air gun

Subsequently, the soldier surnamed Hu has been revealed to have shot another dog with an air gun in April this year. The whole thing was caught on video, with Hu speaking to the camera.

Hu has reportedly admitted to that incident as well, and the authorities will be meting out separate punishments to him for the air gun incident, Sanlih E-Television reported.

Wife of para-athlete pimp 'still loves him unconditionally'

0

The bed in which her husband cheated on her is where she must sleep every night.

It is no wonder that Ms Ally Kuan, 36, the wife of convicted pimp Adam Kamis, has not been sleeping well.

She wanted to talk about her ordeal but is still so traumatised that she got her counsellor, Mr Jeffrey Mak, 49, to speak to the media on her behalf.

“She is struggling to accept everything, and has not been sleeping well,” said Mr Mak, who has counselled the couple since Adam’s crimes came to light last year.

“She keeps thinking of the 16-year-old girl he slept with, that she could’ve been their daughter.

“She still cannot come to terms with it and is traumatised. She did not sleep the whole night before the sentencing.”

CHILD TRAFFICKING

Adam, 37, was jailed for 38 months yesterday after pleading guilty last Monday to 11 counts of procuring women for prostitution and one count of child trafficking under the Prevention of Human Trafficking Act.

He had recruited women, including the 16-year-old student, by making them go through a questionnaire and “verification” test, which required them to have sex with him in his Yishun flat.

It was a fall from grace for the para-athlete who had done Singapore proud by winning gold in the men’s 1,500m at the 2009 ASEAN Para Games.

In 2008, he became the first para-athlete to complete the Vertical Marathon. He also competed in the Commonwealth Games in 2010.

Mr Mak said Ms Kuan, who married Adam in November 2012, knew nothing of what her husband had done. She found out the extent of his vice operations only after it was dredged up in court and reported in the media.

“Initially, she didn’t know there were so many women and that it was happening in their home,” he said.

“Adam only told her that there were two women, and denied that it was happening in their flat.”

Adam lost his right arm and his left arm became paralysed in a motorcycle accident in 2003.

An Ironman race competitor, he gained popularity online as Adam OneArmRunner.

Ms Kuan managed the finances and housekeeping, as well as attended to his needs.

“She was the one doing everything, looking after him and the home, and didn’t expect this to happen,” said Mr Mak.

“There has to be trust in love, so you might ask, how can she continue to love and trust him like that?

“But in love, there is no measurement. She continues to love him unconditionally.”

He added that Ms Kuan intends to forgive Adam but needs time to heal.

“The forgiveness will come, but she asks for time alone to get back on her feet,” said Mr Mak.

“It’s not okay for her, but she says she will forgive Adam.”

He said Ms Kuan also blames herself.

“She wants to say sorry to the victims, to apologise on her husband’s behalf,” said Mr Mak.

He also said that she intends to go to work today, despite all that has happened.

“She realises she still has to face reality despite all that she is going through,” he said.

Applicants asked if they were open to role-playing

It was a job application and like any hiring exercise, the applicants needed to fill up a questionnaire.

But it involved explicit questions about various sex acts they were willing to engage in.

It was for a social escort agency run by former para-athlete Adam Kamis, who later had sex with some of the applicants in his Yishun flat to “test” them out.

Adam eventually recruited 15 women into the vice trade.

His victims, whose ages ranged from 16 to 38, included students, a childcare teacher, a dental assistant and a mother of two. They cannot be named to protect their identities.

When recruiting them online, he gave them a three-page questionnaire. It had 14 questions asking for their biodata and vital statistics like height, weight and bra size.

The less explicit ones included whether they were open to kissing, petting, giving massages, showering with the client and role-playing.

EXPLICIT

The women also had to indicate if they were able to meet and service clients in public places like parks, staircase landings and vehicles.

The more explicit ones are not fit for publication in this newspaper.

Court documents revealed that he set up social escort agency SG Freelancers because he was in debt. Posing as a freelance female escort, Adam recruited women via e-mail, Facebook messages and advertisements.

A total of 34 women responded to the job advertisements.

After indicating their interest, the women were asked to complete the questionnaire and submit photos of themselves fully-clothed and in lingerie.

Adam invited them to his home for an interview, where he introduced himself as a handler at the agency.

The women then had to undergo a “verification” test – some of them multiple times – where he inspected their naked bodies and had sex with them to ensure they were willing to provide sexual services to clients.

If the women were still keen on joining the agency after the test, he would advertise their services on various websites.

But between early 2013 and October 2015, Adam only managed to secure five clients and did not receive any commission.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Sharmila Sripathy-Shanaz said in her submissions that Adam acted as a classic pimp whose recruitment process was detailed and meticulous.

She added: “The accused’s offences are of a genre that causes feelings of revulsion to the community. Left unaddressed, such offences have the potential to undermine the very social fabric of our society.”

Independence Day: Resurgence star Chin Han is heartened by Hollywood's increasing diversity

0

Chin Han, probably Singapore’s most successful actor in Hollywood, says there has been a growing awareness of the need to improve Asian representation on screen in the nine years since he first moved to the United States.

And to those offended by the controversial casting of Scarlett Johansson in the upcoming Ghost In The Shell manga adaptation, in which he has a part, the actor says this is a universal story that bears multiple interpretations and that this version is not necessarily the definitive one.

The Straits Times caught up with the 46-year-old over coffee last week in Los Angeles shortly before he jetted off to the China premiere of his new film Independence Day: Resurgence.

on Twitter

In cinemas now, the action adventure flick starring Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman sees him play a Chinese squadron leader who helps man the Earth’s defences against an alien attack.

Los Angeles has been his home since the actor, whose full name is Ng Chin Han, moved here in 2007 for his first big Hollywood project, the Batman adventure The Dark Knight (2008) [see below].

Photo: Warner Bros

Since then, he says he has noticed a shift in how Asian representation is discussed behind the scenes.

“I do feel that in private conversations and in business conversations it has come up more and more, and it’s a good thing,” he says of the issue, which has gained momentum following the recent controversies over the casting of white actors in Asian roles and the outcry over host Chris Rock’s Asian jokes at this year’s Oscars.

“Also, as an Asian actor, you get a sense that it is a more consolidated effort as well. I think in the past you’d hear, for example, (Star Trek actor) George Takei talking about it, but he’d be one lone voice.

“Now you have (film directors) James Wan and Jon M. Chu talking about it or (actors) Daniel Dae Kim and Constance Wu talking about it. It’s more of a collective now and I feel like all these conversations have also served to bring Asian- American and Asian actors closer, which is not a bad thing.”

Yet the Singaporean performer – who has racked up an impressive list of credits that includes blockbusters such as Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) and 2012 (2009) as well as TV series Marco Polo (2014) [see below], The Blacklist (2013) and Arrow (2013) – reveals that he still sees scripts with Asian characters speaking in pidgin English.

Photo: Phil Bray for Netflix

“Yes, that still happens. It’s a big industry and you run the gamut. But my managers understand what appeals to me and what doesn’t, so thankfully, I don’t get sent these too often,” he says.

But when it comes to the “whitewashing” of Asian roles – in particular, the outcry over Johansson’s part in 2017’s Ghost In The Shell, which some Asian actors have condemned – Chin Han has a different take.

“There are just some stories that lend themselves more easily to adaptation because they address certain universal character arcs and concerns,” he says.

“For example, William Shakespeare’s plays lend themselves to adaptation quite easily, like (Japanese movie director) Akira Kurosawa doing (his 1985 King Lear adaptation) Ran.

“So I feel that in the context of those scripts or those kinds of source material, adaptation is just a natural course of the life of that piece of art or literature. I’m not too fussed about that.”

He would like to see multiple versions of the 2017 movie.

“The canon of Ghost In The Shell, from the anime to the manga to the video games and even now, a stage version of it in Japan, is just so intriguing and so relevant to the times in terms of our reliance on technology now.

“I don’t think the version I’m in is the final version.”

He does, however, condemn some of the more egregious examples of Hollywood whitewashing.

“When it is characters like the one that Mickey Rooney plays in Breakfast At Tiffany’s (1961), where he’s pretending to be an Asian person, or even as great an actor as Marlon Brando, who’s pretending to be Japanese in Teahouse Of The August Moon (1956), then that is at worst offensive and, at best, misguided.”

Overall, the actor believes Hollywood is headed in the right direction when it comes to diversity, thanks in part to the development of television shows.

“Television started becoming interesting when they started doing long-form television or limited series of 10 episodes a season.

“That form of TV really opens up a whole new way of storytelling and many types of shows as well. Because you’re not committed to 26 episodes a season, a network can order a greater variety of shows in a year and more variety means more opportunities for not just actors of diverse ethnicity, but also older actors and more interesting female roles.”

He is content with the opportunities he has had in his career, and has not felt hampered by the fact that Asians are underrepresented on screen.

“I can speak only from a personal point of view… but I’ve had the opportunity to work with great directors,” says the performer, who was directed by Christopher Nolan in The Dark Knight, Steven Soderbergh in epidemic drama Contagion (2011) and Gus Van Sant in Restless (2011), a romance.

Singapore actor Ng Chin Han plays a squardron leader in Independence Day: Resurgence. Photo: Twentieth Century Fox

“So I haven’t felt it as much, but perhaps my requirements for being in movies are a little different. I’m happy being in smaller movies or doing roles that are ostensibly supporting roles, as long as I get to work with the directors I want to work with.”

Working with great actors such as Morgan Freeman, Heath Ledger and Christian Bale in The Dark Knight, John Cusack in the science-fiction flick 2012 (2009), and Marion Cotillard in Contagion, has also taught him much.

“From Morgan Freeman, Christian Bale and the late Heath Ledger, to Marion Cotillard and John Cusack, they are so innately talented, but they come so well- prepared.

“That’s one thing I’ve learnt – that no matter how talented you are, you’ve got to put in the time and work on the scripts that you’ve been entrusted with.”

However, the co-star that has most impressed the actor’s family – specifically, his teenage nieces, whom he sees about once a year “whenever I can fit in a trip to Singapore” – is Hemsworth, the 26-year-old Australian heart-throb from Independence Day: Resurgence.

“My nieces ask me about working with Liam Hemsworth because they watched him in The Hunger Games. They get very excited,” says Chin Han, who occasionally tweets pictures of himself and co-stars such as Hemsworth.

on Twitter

But the actor, who is single, is more than happy to oblige their curiosity, especially now that they are old enough to watch his films.

“I have nine nieces and nephews in a wide range of ages. It’s great because in the past, some of them were very young and were not able to see the films that I’m in. Now they’re all older and can go to the movies together.”

Signing on with talent agency that has groomed Hollywood’s A-listers

It looks like the Los Angeles-base Singaporean actor will also be spending more time in Beijing as he recently signed on with Creative Artists Agency (CAA), reported ChannelNews Asia.

CAA is one of the largest and most influential talent agencies in the world that has represented some of the biggest names in showbiz, including A-listers Robert Downey Jr, George Clooney, Tom Hanks, Will Smith, Meryl Streep, Sandra Bullock, Robert DeNiro and Jennifer Lawrence.

Chin Han continues to be represented by Andrew Ooi of Canada’s Echelon Talent Management.

Independence Day: Resurgence is in cinemas in Singapore.
