Zaobao news talk show now airing on StarHub TV

StarHub TV customers can now catch Lianhe Zaobao’s news talk show on the E City channel (channels 111 and 825).

Launched last November on Zaobao’s digital platform, the three-minute Zaobao Keywords targets people on the go by presenting hard news in an easy-to-digest short video format.

Three keywords that are pertinent to the day’s news story are selected by a Lianhe Zaobao journalist, who discusses it in a casual chat with the host.

The programme is available at 5.30pm every weekday on Lianhe Zaobao’s mobile apps and website.

On StarHub TV’s E City, the day’s episode will be aired at 7.55pm, with repeat telecasts at 10pm on the same day, as well as 9am and 10am the following day, or 8am and 9am if it’s a Saturday.

The broadcast is a joint initiative under the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between Singapore Press Holdings (SPH), which owns Lianhe Zaobao, and StarHub on March 7. Under this MOU, the two companies will collaborate in areas of advertising sales, creation and carriage of content, data analytics and marketing.

Ms Han Yong May, associate editor of Lianhe Zaobao and digital editor of SPH’s Chinese Media Group, said: “Journalists have made the transition from print to digital. Producing videos is now part and parcel of our work in the newsroom as journalists have gradually grown accustomed to straddling across print and digital.”

She added: “We expect to face challenges as we enter the TV arena, as viewers demand higher standards of TV programmes. We are ready to accept this challenge and will strive to offer Lianhe Zaobao’s quality content through more platforms to expand our reach to readers and viewers.”

Ms Lee Soo Hui, head of StarHub’s media business unit, said: “Zaobao Keywords is not only a convenient way for viewers to be up-to-date on key issues, but it also innovatively helps them to grasp these issues through the use of keywords and phrases. We definitely see value in adding this programme to our line-up.”

24 Malaysians lodge police reports in Singapore after allegedly losing $135,000 in investment scam

SINGAPORE – A group of angry Malaysian investors, claiming to be victims of an alleged investment scam, lodged police reports in Singapore on Sunday afternoon (July 3).

The group, which comprised 24 investors who were mostly from Johor Bahru and Malacca, alleged that they were cheated by a Singapore-based investment company, and wanted to recoup US$100,000 (S$135,000) that was owed to them.

Chinese evening daily Shin Min Daily News reported that the group crossed the Causeway to lodge police reports at the Police Cantonment Complex along Cantonment Road.

They then went to a nearby field at the bottom of a block of flats at Neil Road, where they unfurled a banner which bore the photos of a man and woman who are apparently the owners of the investment company.

The banner referred to the pair as “liars” and “conmen”, and also had the message: “return the money earned with our blood and sweat to us!”

One of the investors, a 36-year-old used car salesperson, told Shin Min that more than 100,000 Malaysians had made investments with the commpany, and may have suffered losses amounting to US$20 million.

She told reporters that most of the people in the group had started investing their money with the company in August 2014.

“At the start, everything seemed normal, and we could go online to check the returns on our investments every day. Initially it seemed like a profitable business, as we seemed to see profits almost every day and could earn interest of about 5 per cent in a month,” she said.

It was not until April or May last year when problems started to arise.

“The company’s owner suddenly wanted to transfer all the investment funds into another company. But after the change, we realised that there was no longer transactions every day and we also could no longer check on our returns daily,” the salesperson explained.

When some investors started to raise questions and began requesting to withdraw from the investment company, the owner became evasive and begun making excuses.

“When people asked for their money, the boss told us that they would need to wait for some time before they could collect their funds because they were being transferred to the new company.

“The owner then told us that he was not able to allow investors to make transactions every day as he was being investigated by police in Singapore and money laundering companies from Hong Kong,” she told Shin Min.

Eventually, the company’s owner told investors that they would be able to retrieve their funds from a bank in the Philippines. But investors who tried to do so were unsuccessful.

The salesperson added that the group had also lodged police reports in Malaysia before making them in Singapore.

According to Shin Min, police confirmed that reports had been lodged and said that investigations were ongoing.

Checks on the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) website also revealed that the investment company in question was not recognised by the authorities.

Football: Bale trains apart as Wales gear up for Portugal

Dinard, France – Gareth Bale trained apart from his team-mates on Monday as Wales continued preparations for their Euro 2016 semi-final against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal on Wednesday.

While Bale’s team-mates warmed up on the pitch at the team’s training base in Dinard, northwest France, the Real Madrid star and midfielder David Edwards were put through their paces by a fitness coach.

A Football Association of Wales spokesman told AFP that Bale was not injured.

Defender Ben Davies and in-form midfielder Aaron Ramsey were present, despite both being suspended for Wednesday’s game in Lyon.

The only absentee from the 23-man squad was winger David Cotterill, who observes a customised training schedule devised in consultation with his club, Birmingham City.

Wales qualified for the first major tournament semi-final in their history by beating Belgium 3-1 in Lille last Friday.

They are due to train in Dinard again on Tuesday before travelling to Lyon later in the day.
