Suspect in StanChart robbery 'calmly' checked into Bangkok hostel
A suspect in the alleged robbery of a Standard Chartered Bank branch in Holland Village on Thursday (July 7) had calmly checked into a $16-a-night hostel in Bangkok within hours of the incident.
According to Shin Min Daily News, the 1.8m-tall man had only a haversack with him when he arrived at the hostel at about 10pm without having a room reservation.
The Canadian has been identifed by Thai media as 26-year-old David James Roach.
A source told Shin Min Daily News that Roach had planned to stay in the hostel for two days but he extended his stay at the Boxpackers Hostel in central Bangkok.
The Straits Times reported that Roach changed his room each night, starting with a four-bedder before switching to a six-bedder. He was believed to have been arrested in the 10-bed room.
In a post published on Facebook on Monday (July 11), the Singapore Police Force (SPF) confirmed that Roach was arrested in Thailand on Sunday (July 10).
Roach allegedly made off with around $30,000 in cash with no weapon used during the heist. Through investigations, his identity was established that same day but he had already left Singapore for Bangkok, shortly after the robbery had been reported, said the police.
The SPF then obtained the assistance of their Thai counterparts in locating and apprehending the suspect.
According to Channel NewsAsia, this was not Roach’s first trip to Thailand. He was reported to have made trips to Bangkok “many times” before this incident.

Singapore jails 4 Bangladeshis with links to Islamic State
A SINGAPORE court has sentenced four Bangladeshi workers to up to five years in prison for planning attacks linked to the Islamic State (IS) group in their home country.
Rahman Mizanur, Miah Rubel, Md Jabath Kysar Haje Norul Islam Sowdagar and Sohel Hawlader Ismail Hawlader pleaded guilty in May to helping fund terror attacks in Bangladesh.
Prosecutors said the men had contributed part of their salary to buy food, arms and weapons like knives and pistols to launch the attacks.

Rahman, who was identified as the group’s ringleader, was sentenced to five years in prison. Miah and Jabath were senctenced to 30 months each, while Sohel was given two years behind bars.
“Much havoc can be wracked with inexpensive items. The cost of a terrorist act can be modest, but the cost to society is far greater. Singapore must take a firm stance against terrorism and terrorism financing,” the prosecution said, according to Channel News Asia.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has said Rahman possessed guides on making weapons and bombs.
In sentencing Rahman on Tuesday, District Judge Kessler Soh emphasized that a deterrent sentence and “much stiffer punishment is warranted”.
The four men are part of a group of eight men detained since April under Singapore’s Internal Security Act.

The sentences come just 10 days after Bangladesh suffered a deadly hostage crisis in which 28 were killed, including 20 hostages, two policemen and six of the attackers.
Among the people who died in the siege in Dhaka’s diplomatic zone were nine Italians, seven Japanese, one Indian, and three students from American universities.
The Islamic State has also claimed responsibility for a number of attacks in Southeast Asia in recent weeks. Indonesian authorities say IS was behind a suicide attack on a police station in the Javanese city of Solo last week.
Malaysian police, meanwhile, have linked a blast at a nightclub near the capital Kuala Lumpur last month to IS, in what could be the first attack by the terrorist group in the Southeast Asian nation.
Tensions were further heightened last week with reports of flyers and letters warning of bomb attacks in the Riau archipelago, targeting travelers from Singapore, and Johor in southern Malaysia.

Suspect flees Taiwan after $2.9 million stolen from ATMs with the help of malware
A Russian national fled the country Monday after helping steal NT$70 million (S$2.9 million) in cash from First Commercial Bank (第一銀行) ATMs over the weekend, the police said this morning.
A Taiwanese suspect is believed to still be in the country, while both the nationality and whereabouts of a third suspect remain unknown.
Malware that caused cash to be automatically dispensed was installed on 34 teller machines in Taipei and Taichung. This is the first reported instance of such ATM hacking ever in Taiwan.
The police, citing video footage and other evidence, said two suspects operated the machines while the other remained in the getaway vehicle.
Because the money was not withdrawn from individual accounts, customers will not bear any losses, a First Bank official said.
Initial reports said two Russians were involved, but an officer at Taipei City Police Department’s Daan Precinct said this morning that only one Russian national had so far been identified, adding that the investigation was still in its early stages.
To prevent additional losses, First Bank has suspended the operation of 300 of its 768 ATMs nationwide. Bank of Taiwan (台灣銀行), Chang Hwa Bank (彰化銀行) and Taiwan Cooperative Bank (合作金庫) use the same ATM model and have also temporarily halted teller machine services.
