A YOUNG Singaporean boy had a close brush with death when he bolted across a road, only to be hit by an oncoming car.

Footage taken from the car’s dashboard camera went viral across social media on Tuesday, triggering a wide debate over whether it was the boy or the driver of the vehicle who was responsible for the incident.

Fortunately, the boy survived accident – although hopefully he learned a hard lesson in road safety.

According to AsiaOne, the dashboard footage taken from the vehicle’s driver was uploaded online recently, gaining over half a million views after a Facebook user named Suzy Adorabella Lyliana posted it online on Tuesday.

The accident had reportedly taken place at a Housing and Development Board (HDB) estate in Jurong West.

The footage begins with the car traversing down the road at what looks like a relatively normal speed while passing an idle bus on the left. Within seconds, the bespectacled boy clad in a green t-shirt and carrying a sling bag dashed across the road, only to collide with the vehicle, causing him to be flung several meters on to the opposite lane.

However, the boy appeared to be conscious after the collision but he was seemed to struggle to regain his footing. Not long after, passers-by came to aid the boy who was clearly traumatized.

An elderly man and woman who came to help the boy were quick to point at the driver over the “mistake”, but netizens who watched the video came to the defense of the person behind the wheel.

Ted Ng said: “So sad.. no one care for the driver [sic], all pin point and keep blaming the driver, take photo to complain as “reckless driver” when they don’t even know the whole story..”

Responding to claims the driver did nothing to help, another user Nasrul Hakim said it was possible that he or she had alighted from the vehicle.

“Its a dashboard cam. Not the freaking driver holding the camera. There’s no audio to prove that he is still in the car. And i don’t wanna pick sides. But it’s definitely the boy’s fault.”

David Ting said the driver could have been in a state of shock, and “that is why he or she didn’t get out to help”.
