Man convicted of raping partygoer on Sentosa beach
SINGAPORE – A 26-year-old former Sentosa beach patrol officer was on Monday (July 18) convicted of raping and sexually assaulting a drunk partygoer on Siloso Beach.
The High Court found that the prosecution had proved its case against Pram Nair – on one charge each of rape and sexual assault – beyond a reasonable doubt. He will be sentenced at a later date.
The woman, then a relief teacher, was attending a party at Wave House, a club and restaurant located at the beach with a female friend on the night of May 5, 2012. She had drunk several shots of whisky and orange-flavoured liquer before Nair approached her group at the bar counter and started chatting with them.
Nair suggested playing a game that involved him pouring liqueur from the bottle directly into the victim’s mouth for 20 seconds – as she had turned 20 the week before.
After some time, the victim’s friend, realising that she could not stand without support and could not finish her sentences, decided it was time to leave. The friend went to get the victim’s bag at another section of the club but when she returned, the victim and Nair were gone.
During the 15-day trial from last August to April, the victim said that she got “wasted” and could not remember what happened after her friend went to get her bag. She testified that she woke up on the beach from the pain of Nair raping her but was too weak to push him off.
Two other partygoers who saw Nair on top of the victim at the beach called the police.
The victim’s friend went looking for her and found her lying on the sand. Nair, who was there, told her that he had found the victim at the spot naked. Nair walked away but was later arrested nearby.
During the trial, Nair said the victim flirted with him that night, telling him that she “kinda liked him” and asked him to “please take me away from all the guys”. He said that she agreed to have sex with him but he eventually abandoned the idea as he could not get an erection.
While she was on the stand, the victim teared up a few times and spoke about how, three years later, even though she has moved on, there are still times when she still feels “disgusted” with herself.
“I’ve never been more sorry to my parents because they raised me up really well; and because I was disobedient and went out on that one night… it brought so much pain that there’s a long time after that where I couldn’t even lie in bed without feeling like ripping my own skin off….” she told the court.

Kanye West and Taylor Swift in new row over sex song
NEW YORK – Taylor Swift voiced outrage to her millions of fans earlier this year when rapper Kanye West bragged in verse that he made her famous and could sleep with her.
But was the pop superstar’s sense of being wronged – which she made clear in her acceptance speech at the Grammy Awards for Album of the Year – insincere?
So suggests the rapper’s wife, reality television star Kim Kardashian, who late on Sunday put out a tape of West on the telephone with Swift previewing lines from his song “Famous”, released in February on his “The Life of Pablo” album.
In the video, which Kardashian aired through Snapchat, the Chicago-bred West recites the lyrics, “For all my South Side niggas that know me best / I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex.” A seemingly upbeat Swift is heard replying: “I really appreciate you telling me about it. That’s really nice,” as West says he wants her to feel comfortable because he considers her a friend.
Swift denounced the leak of the phone conversation soon after, saying West never told her the next line in the song – “I made that bitch famous.”
“You don’t get to control someone’s emotional response to being called ‘that bitch’ in front of the entire world,” she wrote on Instagram.
“While I wanted to be supportive of Kanye on the phone call, you cannot ‘approve’ a song you haven’t heard,” she wrote.
“Being falsely painted as a liar when I was never given the full story or played any part of the song is character assassination,” she added.
“I would very much like to be excluded from this narrative, one that I never asked to be part of, since 2009.”
She was referring to the MTV Video Music Awards in 2009, when West rushed onto the stage as Swift was accepting an award to say Beyonce was more deserving.
In an acceptance speech at this year’s Grammys, Swift sent a message to young women, warning that there will be “people along the way who will try to undercut your success, or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame.”
West has not backed down. Last month, he released a video for “Famous” that features him in bed with a bare-breasted woman with a striking resemblance to Swift – as well as other nude doppelgangers of celebrities including Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.
