'Waterfall' in MRT train leaves commuters drenched
SINGAPORE – Commuters on a train on the East West Line, travelling from Clementi to Outram Park stations, ended up getting an unexpected shower when water fell through a ventilation gap in the ceiling.
According to the Shin Min Daily News, the incident occurred on July 18 at about 6.20pm.
Photos captured by eyewitnesses showed water pouring down from the roof of the train. One female commuter told the Chinese evening daily that she noticed the air-conditioning vent was leaking when she boarded the train at Clementi.
Soon after, water started pouring into the carriage from the gap, pooling at commuters’ feet.
Passengers quickly got out of the way of the cascading “waterfall”. Quite a few were snapping photos of the sight with their mobile phones, she said.
She said a man standing below the leak was too engrossed with his mobile phone to notice at first, but jumped out of the way after he felt his shirt getting wet.

Similar incidents had occured on the North East Line last July and on the East West Line in August 2014, the latter after a heavy downpour.

K-pop group Exo's Chanyeol says sorry for illegally downloading Pokemon game
Chanyeol from Chinese and Korean pop group Exo issued an apology for illegally downloading a Pokemon game on his cell phone.
On Saturday Chanyeol had uploaded on his Instagram a screenshot of the “Pokemon Gold” game on his mobile phone.
Some people commented online, saying that it was impossible to play this game on a cellphone unless it had been downloaded illegally.
One of them said, “How can he play this game on his phone? He must have downloaded it illegally. Chanyeol is basically proving via his SNS that he downloaded a game illegally.”
“Pokemon Gold” is available only for Nintendo systems and not for computers or cell phones, unless it is downloaded illegally.
Chanyeol, facing mounting criticism, deleted the Instagram image.
He issued an apology on his Instagram on Tuesday. “I apologise to those who purchased the original game and everyone else who was offended by my Instagram post,” he said. “I will purchase the originals in the future and be more circumspect about my actions.”

High speed rail MoU between Malaysia and Singapore inked
PETALING JAYA – A memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Governments of Malaysia and Singapore on the High-Speed Rail (HSR) linking Kuala Lumpur and Singapore has been signed.
In a joint statement issued by the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) and Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) on Tuesday, it was announced that the Mou was signed between Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan and his counterpart Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Minister for Transport Khaw Boon Wan.
The agreement stated that there would be eight HSR stations between Bandar Malaysia and Singapore. The six intermediate stations will be located at Seremban, Ayer Keroh, Muar, Batu Pahat and Iskandar Puteri.
“All stations will be designed to integrate with the local public transport systems to ensure seamless connectivity.”
It said that the HSR trains would run at a top speed of more than 300km/h.
“Both Governments agreed to work towards commencing HSR operations by around 2026,” it said
The signing of the document was also witnessed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
The statement also said that the MoU “captures” key points of agreement on the project, including the technical parameters, commercial model, customs, immigration & quarantine (CIQ) clearance, safety & security matters, regulatory framework, as well as project management.
“The MoU will guide the development of a legally-binding bilateral agreement to be signed by both Governments towards the end of this year.”
Both Malaysia and Singapore had also agreed to take responsibility for developing, constructing and maintaining the civil infrastructure and stations within their own countries, which will be undertaken by MyHSR Corporation and LTA (as InfraCos) in Malaysia and Singapore respectively.
“Through international tenders, an assets company (AssetsCo) will be appointed to provide and maintain the HSR trains and its associated systems (e.g. track, power, signalling and telecommunications), while two train operating companies (OpCos) will be appointed to operate the HSR services.”
“It also reiterates the Governments’ commitment to ensure that all project tenders are conducted in an open, fair and transparent manner, so as to encourage participation from technology and service providers worldwide,” it said.
Meanwhile, OpCo International will be in charge of operating cross-border services while OpCo Domestic will operate the Domestic Service within Malaysia.
A Bilateral Committee comprising representatives from both Governments was also agreed in order to manage and regulate aspects of the project that might impact the cross-border services..
The HSR is expected to cut travel time between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore to 90 minutes.
Indonesia's most wanted Islamist militant killed: police
Jakarta – Indonesia’s most wanted Muslim extremist has been killed in a firefight with security forces, police said Tuesday, ending a lengthy hunt for the Islamic State (IS) group supporter.
Santoso, the leader of the Eastern Indonesia Mujahideen, was shot dead on Monday on mountainous Sulawesi island, where he had been hiding out in the jungle with a small band of followers.
His death is a major victory for the Indonesian authorities who had pursued the extremist for five years, sending thousands of security forces to hunt for him.
His group carried out a string of deadly attacks on domestic security forces and was known for training militants from around the archipelago. In 2014 he pledged allegiance to IS and earlier this year was placed on a list of global terrorists by the United States.
“It’s definitely Santoso,” Rudy Sufahriadi, police chief of Central Sulawesi province on the island, told AFP after a process to identify the militant’s body.
“I have hunted him and I have arrested him before, we have asked people and we have sent people (to identify the body) who fought with him and went on jihad with him – they have confirmed it was him.”
After Indonesia suffered a string of Islamic extremist attacks in the early 2000s, including the 2002 Bali bombings, the authorities launched a crackdown that was credited with weakening the most dangerous networks.
But Santoso’s group remained a thorn in the side of the government, with the long-haired, gun-toting militant regularly appearing in videos urging extremists to launch attacks on the security forces.
The picture has changed recently, with other cells now considered a greater threat – Santoso was not believed to have played role in an IS-claimed attack in Jakarta in January. But his death will still be seen as a significant blow to Islamic militancy in Indonesia.
The extremist, known by several aliases including Abu Wardah, was killed alongside one other militant in Tambarana village in Poso district, an area that has become known as a terror hotbed.
Santoso also attracted militants from abroad, with several members of China’s mostly Muslim Uighur ethnic minority travelling to Indonesia to join his group.
Several were killed fighting with the Eastern Indonesia Mujahideen, and in July last year four Uighurs were jailed after being caught on Sulawesi attempting to join the group.
Santoso became involved in Islamic extremism during bloody fighting between Muslims and Christians around Poso from the late 1990s to the early 2000s which left hundreds dead.
He went on to form the Eastern Indonesia Mujahideen and quickly jumped to the top of the most wanted list after his men began killing police officers.
