Singapore Airlines (SIA) has retained its title for the first half of this year as the brand with the most positive image in Singapore, according to a survey by global market research agency YouGov.
Messaging app WhatsApp came in second while Apple iPhone, Facebook and clothing label Uniqlo clinched the third to fifth spots respectively in YouGov’s BrandIndex Buzz rankings. YouTube came in 10th.
SIA also emerged top in the global survey last year, which involved Singapore for the first time.
YouGov tracked 250 Singapore brands across 11 categories in the 2016 mid-year survey to determine which brands had the most positive buzz about them.
In the 2016 Mid-Year Best Brand Ranking for Singapore, one metric YouGov used was to ask respondents: “If you’ve heard anything about the brand in the last two weeks, through advertising, news or word of mouth, was it positive or negative?”
Scores ranged from 100 to -100 and were compiled by subtracting negative feedback from positive.
SIA got a score of 44.5, WhatsApp got 33.6, Apple iPhone got 33.5, Uniqlo got 28.3 while YouTube got 24.1.
A zero score means equal positive and negative feedback.

She was outgoing and loved life.
At work, Ms Cui Yajie was hardworking and would frequently work late into the night while keeping her long hours a secret from her mother in China.
On July 11, the 31-year-old left the office around 9pm.
She never turned up for work the next day.
Two nights ago, what were believed to be the remains of her body were uncovered at Lim Chu Kang Lane 8, after a man who was arrested in connection with her disappearance led police to the site.
Yesterday, Leslie Khoo Kwee Hock, 48, was charged with the murder of Ms Cui.
Khoo is accused of killing Ms Cui between 8am and 10.11am on July 12 at Gardens by The Bay East in Marina Bay.
The charge of murder with intention, which was read out in English, did not state how Khoo committed the crime.
This is the fourth murder case this month.
Addressing the recent spate of murder cases, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Investigations & Intelligence) and concurrent Director of the Criminal Investigation Department Tan Chye Hee said the police are committed to keeping Singapore safe and will spare no effort to track down offenders to ensure that they face the brunt of the law.
Ms Cui, who was from Tianjin, China, was a friendly and outgoing woman, said a friend in a post online.
She had been working as an engineer at a semiconductor company in Singapore.
Last Thursday, Ms Cui’s colleagues filed a missing persons report after she failed to turn up for work for two days.
A police news release appealing for information on her whereabouts was issued the next day, and said that she had last been seen on July 11 at 9.15pm around Fusionopolis Walk at one-north in Buona Vista.
Ms Cui’s friends remembered her to be very hardworking, saying she would frequently work late into the night.
A female friend told Shin Min Daily News that Ms Cui was easy-going and sporty.
They were not close, but had known each other for three years and had gone out a couple of times for meals.
“She loved to eat Thai food. She was an extrovert who loved swimming and golf,” she said.
Chinese daily Lianhe Wanbao reported that Ms Cui had posted a video online of herself skydiving in Australia last year.

In the post, she said that she was very excited as it was her first time doing it.
She also posted many photos online documenting her travels and outings.
Shin Min reported that Ms Cui moved from Dover neighbourhood to a flat in Holland Village about a month ago.
Neighbours at her Holland Village home said that Ms Cui left the flat very early and they rarely saw her return at night.
A female neighbour also said the Chinese national never initiated conversations.
A neighbour told Shin Min: “(On Wednesday night) police went into her flat to investigate and took away some possessions. The police also showed me a picture of her when they asked me about her.”
TNP understands that Ms Cui’s family is coming to Singapore.
Yesterday, the court heard that Khoo will be remanded at the Central Police Division for one week during which he will assist in investigations.
The case will be mentioned in court again on July 28.
If found guilty of murder with intention, Khoo will face the mandatory death penalty.
Other murders this month
The alleged murder of Ms Cui is the fourth murder case this month.

July 13
A 55-year-old man died after a fight at Taj Mahal Bollywood Music Lounge in Boat Quay at around 5am.
The victim was rushed unconscious to Singapore General Hospital, where he died three days later.
On July 19, a 47-year-old man was charged in court with his murder.
July 11
A 42-year-old man died after being stabbed outside a Jalan Besar pub following a scuffle.
He was pronounced dead at a hostel, called The Trey, at about 11.30pm.
No arrests have been made and the case has been classified as murder.
July 9
A 52-year-old coffeeshop helper was found dead after a fight at Lorong 23 Geylang at 8am.
Several weapons, including a long wooden stick and short knife, were found at the scene.
Police have arrested a 64-year-old man who will be charged in court for murder today.

TOKYO – A Japanese startup has developed a pen that can bring pictures to life using a silver quick drying ink that conducts electricity.
The “Circuit Marker” allows users to draw an electric circuit that can withstand up to 100 volts. The circuits are capable of lighting lamps and powering motors.
Inventors AgIC demonstrated the pen by drawing a series of buildings on electronic-embedded paper that lit up to make a small 3D town, complete with street lights and a moving car. “Traditionally electric circuits are solid and thick and it was very difficult to be put up across the walls or the floor. However, with our Circuit Marker you can simply draw it,” Shinya Shimizu, CEO of the startup, told Reuters.
The pen costs US$14.99 (S$20.30) and a sheet of the required A4-size paper is US$37.49. A crowdfunding backed campaign also helped with the development of an eraser pen.
Shimizu believed the items would help startup companies with the development of prototypes. “With our company we only need to draw it, making it much easier to try new creative ideas,” Shimizu said.
SINGAPORE – In the wake of the recent spate of killings, Deputy Commissioner of Police for investigations and intelligence Tan Chye Hee has said the police will spare no effort to trace the offenders. He added that the police are committed to keeping Singapore safe and offenders will “face the full brunt of the law”.
On Wednesday night, the remains of Ms Cui Yajie were found at a densely forested area in Lim Chu Kang Lane 8. The police had been led to the grisly scene by 48-year-old Leslie Khoo Kwee Hock, who was charged with her murder on Thursday (July 21).
Over the last two weeks, there have been four other alleged killings.
On Tuesday (July 19), 47-year-old Thennarasu Karupiah was charged with the murder of a 55-year-old Arokiasamy Paul Rajoo in a Boat Quay pub on July 13. Thennarasu allegedly committed the crime at about 5am at Taj Mahal Bollywood Music Lounge.
Mr Arokiasamy was taken unconscious to hospital, where he died three days later.Thennarasu was arrested on Monday (July 18).
Last Monday (July 11), 42-year-old Chua Meng Guan died after being stabbed outside a Jalan Besar pub. Mr Chua had challenged his assailant to a fight before a scuffle broke out outside the pub and the hostel next to it, according to witnesses.
He was later found on the floor, bleeding profusely from wounds in his chest, where he had been stabbed with a knife.
On July 9, a 52-year-old man was found motionless on the road at Geylang Lorong 23. He was pronounced dead by paramedics at 8.11am.
The helper at a zi char stall had a deep cut from the left side of his ear to the top of his head. A wooden stick and a bloodied knife were found at the scene. A 64-year-old man has been arrested in relation to the case.
Also on July 9, Mr Shawn Ignatius Rodrigues, 26, a former Republic Polytechnic student was found dead outside a flat at Block 279 in Yishun.
The 20-year-old suspect allegedly tied Mr Rodrigues’ wrists and ankles before hitting him outside a stairwell on the sixth floor. Mr Rodrigues was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene. The suspect was arrested.
