Welcome Beverie, the year's first National Day baby born at midnight

0

The first baby born on National Day arrived on the stroke of midnight, to her parents’ surprise.

Beverie Goh Rui Xuan was delivered naturally at Thomson Medical Centre right on the dot, just in time for Singapore’s 51st birthday.

The 2.9kg girl is the first child of marketing manager Benjamin Goh, 28, and accounts executive Jade Ho, 27. “I feel very happy and honoured,” she said. “National Day will be another significant day to look forward to.”

The couple received a gift pack worth nearly $1,000 from the hospital, which included diapers, milk powder and a book on nutrition.

Olympics: Swimmer Joseph Schooling in to semi-finals, breaks national record

0

SINGAPORE – Singapore swimmer Joseph Schooling has qualified for the 100m freestyle semi-finals, after placing second among eight swimmers in Heat 6 of the event, which was held just past midnight Singapore time on Aug 10.

He clocked in at 48.27s, breaking his previous record of 48.58s set at the SEA Games last year, The Straits Times reported.

Schooling is currently the sixth fastest swimmer in the semis. Australia’s Kyle Chalmers was the fastest man (47.9), followed by the United States’ Caeleb Dressel (47.91) and Britain’s Duncan Scott (48.01).

The semi-final will be held on Tuesday evening in Rio (Wednesday morning at 9.03am Singapore time).

Schooling will also be competing in the 100m butterfly, where he is expected to reach the final.
