Flood-hit elephant that travelled 1700km dies in Bangladesh
Dhaka – An elephant thought to have travelled at least 1,700 kilometres from India into Bangladesh after becoming separated from its herd by floods died on Tuesday despite last-ditch efforts to save him.
The distressed animal was tranquillised three times in sometimes dramatic bids to try to transport him to a safari park in Bangladesh, after he washed across the border in late June.
He was eventually given huge amounts of saline and chained in a paddy field in a northern village to help him recover, but he was “too weak and tired” from his ordeal, officials said.
“It breathed its last at around 7am (0100 GMT),” the government’s chief wildlife conservator Ashit Ranjan Paul told AFP.
“We have given our highest effort to save the animal. At least 10 forest rangers, vets and policemen have constantly followed it for the last 48 days. But our luck is bad,” he said.
Paul said the animal likely travelled more than 1,700 kilometres (1,060 miles) from the northeastern Indian state of Assam after being separated from his herd in severe flooding.
The animal ran amok and charged into a pond after Bangladesh forest officials hit him with a tranquilliser dart last Thursday.
Local villagers jumped into the pond to save the four-tonne animal from drowning by stopping it from toppling into the water.
A mahout was also critically injured during another rescue effort on Monday after being kicked by the again tranquillised elephant.
Local media blamed excessive tranquillising for the animal’s death, saying he became too weak to stand.
But Paul said the long journey was responsible, adding that rescue efforts had been hampered by the thousands of curious villagers following him.
“In the end it became too tired by travelling such a great length. It had been separated from its herd for some two months and did not get the nutrients that it needed,” he said.
“Thousands of villagers followed it everyday as it entered into Bangladesh and then travelled to villages and river islands across the Brahmaputra river.”

5,000 ANA passengers arrive at destination without luggage
Thousands of passengers on All Nippon Airways’ (ANA’s) domestic flights in Japan arrived at their destinations sans luggage on Friday (Aug 12), after a conveyor belt in Tokyo’s Haneda Airport malfunctioned.
RocketNews24 reported that, instead of their luggage, passengers arriving in Oita were met upon arrival with a sign informing them that their luggage did not make the flight.
ANA said in the handwritten apology that the company will try to send the passengers’ luggage to them within the day, but hoped that passengers can be “understanding” if the company failed to do that, as “there is a lot of congestion at Haneda Airport”.

What miffed some passengers even more was that ANA only informed passengers about the problem with their luggage after they’ve landed and left the aircraft, even though the crew knew about the problem.
“At the time we were supposed to take off, they announced there would be a short delay because ‘they were loading the bags’…Now I have to write my address on a piece of paper, so they’ll send (my luggage) to me,” tweeted a passenger who arrived in Hokkaido.

Japan’s Kyodo news agency reported that one of ANA’s two conveyor belts stopped at about 6.50am as sensors failed. The belt was restarted about 40 minutes later.
The stoppage led to 12 flights leaving Haneda airport with just part of the check-in luggage, and 16 flights with none at all. Some 2,080 pieces of luggage were left behind, Kyodo said. The 28 flights carried about 7,800 passengers.
ANA explained that it decided to let flights depart without check-in luggage to shorten delays and reduce confusion at the airport, and to minimise the impact on other flights.
The airline said a total of 42 flights were delayed by more than 30 minutes, affecting 12,700 passengers.
RocketNews24 said that about 5,500 passengers were left without their luggage.
It reported that some passengers were also miffed that only “angry” passengers received a 5,000 yen (S$67) “apology” from the airline.
The report said that Buzzfeed Japan had interviewed a passenger in Okayama who did not have a forwarding address for his luggage. He said ANA staff gave him an envelope with the money inside when he talked to the staff.
The passenger in Hokkaido tweeted that she overheard a couple complaining about receiving “just 5,000 yen” after she had written down her address for the airline and left. “Apparently if you get all angry and get up in the staff’s face, they’ll slip you an envelope with 5,000 yen inside…It’s kind of sneaky of them not to tell everyone,” she wrote.

SMRT refurbishes escalators at 42 train stations
SINGAPORE – SMRT said on Tuesday (Aug 16) that it will refurbish escalators at 42 stations along the North-South East-West Lines (NSEWL) – the first major refurbishment of escalators at stations since the MRT began operations in 1987.
In a press release, the public transport service operator said that commuters can look forward to newer and more energy efficient escalators after the upgrade.
The refurbishment of each escalator, which includes installation of new parts such as traction motors and ‘traffic lights’ indicating the direction of travel, will take eight to ten weeks to complete.
SMRT added that refurbishment work will be carried out on only one escalator at a time at each station to minimise inconvenience to commuters.
Work has commenced at Ang Mo Kio MRT station, and will start at Tanah Merah MRT station later this month and Tanjong Pagar MRT station in November this year.
According to SMRT, a total of 233 escalators at 42 of the 541 MRT stations along the NSEWL will be refurbished. The upgrade is expected to be completed by end 2021.
