Malaysian bronze medallist posts sarcastic 'thank you' to chief minister
PETALING JAYA: Track cyclist Azizulhasni Awang took a jab at Terengganu Mentri Besar Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman on social media.
In his Facebook comment thanking the Mentri Besar “for not helping”, Azizul said the state government did not give him a helping hand during his training and ignored his request for a bicycle.
Azizul posted on Facebook his feelings of gratitude to a number of people for supporting his cycling career, including his parents, his wife, his two daughters and his Australian coach.
However, the portion of his thank-you note aimed at the Mentri Besar was dripping with sarcasm as Azizul thanked him for doing little to help him and his fellow Olympic cyclist Fatehah Mustapa in their preparations for the Olympic Games.
“To Terengganu Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Razif, Fatehah and I still wish to express our thanks even though you did not help Fatehah and I, two Terengganu natives, who are competing at the world and Olympic levels.
“Thank you for not purchasing a ‘RoadBike’ for us to use in our preparations for the Olympic Games even though we had sent a proposal about a year before the Rio Olympics.
“Thank you for not providing feedback and for keeping silent while my manager contacted you.
“For your information, Fatehah and I are world-class and Olympic level athletes who you have always overlooked,” said Azizul.
The 28-year-old, commonly referred to as the ‘Pocket Rocket Man’ by his peers, took the bronze medal at the keirin event at the Rio Olympics.
He added that perhaps they were overlooked because they trained overseas.
Azizul said he hoped his remarks would be taken in a positive light and would be an ‘eye opener’ for all those who should have played a part in supporting the Olympic athletes.
“Regardless of what happens, we are still proud to be to born and bred in Terengganu,” he said.
Ahmad Razif on Wednesday announced that Azizul would receive a hero’s welcome when he arrives home and that his name will be carved as Terengganu’s most successful sportsman at the state museum.
The Mentri Besar added that the cyclist would be receiving other incentives though he did not reveal what exactly they were.
Terengganu govt to look into Azizul’s complaints
Mentri Besar Ahmad Razif Abd Rahman has instructed the state sports council and executive councillor for youth and sports Datuk Rozi Mamat to look into Olympic bronze medallist Azizul Hasni Awang’s Facebook rant that has gone viral.
“I am not aware of any demand (made by Azizul). We will look into the matter and if there was any such demand and he was overlooked, then I, on behalf of the state government will apologise for it,” Ahmad Razif said Wednesday.
“We will also need to hear Azizul’s side of the story, as we all know there have been too many fake accounts created,” he told reporters.
MB promises Azizul a hero’s welcome
Azizul Hasni Awang will receive a hero’s welcome when he arrives home, and his name will be carved as Terengganu’s most successful sportsman at the state museum here, said Ahmad Razif.
That’s not all, Ahmad Razif said, adding that Azizul will receive other incentives which are yet to be announced.
“Like all other athletes who have shone in the international arena, Azizul too will receive honours for making Terengganu and Malaysia proud.
“We are also planning to have a roadshow with Azizul across the state for him to share his experience and raise the spirit of other young athletes in Terengganu,” said Ahmad Razif.
He said the state government takes sports seriously and a substantial sum has been set aside for football, cycling and hockey.

Baby girl born mid-air on flight to Philippines
New Delhi – A woman gave birth to a premature but healthy baby girl mid-flight while travelling from the United Arab Emirates to the Philippines, forcing the plane to carry out an emergency landing in India.
The mother, whose due date was two months away, went into labour on board the Cebu Pacific Air flight Sunday as it flew from Dubai to Manila, her fellow passenger Missy Berberabe Umandal posted on Facebook.
Panicked flight attendants started calling out for medical assistance — discovering two nurses among the passengers — before turning the front of the cabin into a makeshift delivery room.
“We only heard one semi-loud screech, and a few seconds later, there were tinier, cute screeches, and it was when we knew the baby was born. Luckily, she only had to push ONCE,” Umandal said in her post, with a picture showing the mother holding her newborn, wrapped in a blanket. The mother’s nationality is not known.
Flight attendants and nurses cleaned the baby with mineral water and dressed her in baby clothes donated by fellow passengers flying with infants.
The pilot conducted an emergency landing in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad so the mother and newborn could receive medical attention before continuing on to Manila.
“After initial examination by the medical staff, they were moved to the mother and child care centre of a hospital in the city,” a Hyderabad airport security official told AFP, requesting anonymity.
“The newborn and mother are fine and under medical supervision.”
The woman, her own mother who was travelling with her, and the baby were given three-day temporary visas, which would most likely be extended until parent and child were fit to fly, the official said.

SCDF extinguishes raging fire at CK Building in Tampines after more than 4 hours
Occupants of a building in Tampines Street 92 had to be evacuated on Wednesday (Aug 17) afternoon after a huge fire broke out.
The incident had reportedly started before 2pm at CK Building, according to local media.
Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) in a Facebook post that its firefighters were on hand to battle the raging fire and that occupants from two immediate neighbouring buildings were also evacuated.
According to The Straits Times, 67 people were evacuated from the burning CK building.
The fire was finally extinguished at around 6.45pm, more than four hours after it was first reported.
While there were reportedly no known casualties, SCDF added that one firefighter had to be sent to the hospital due to heat exhaustion.
The fire was “raging on the 3rd and 4th floor” of the building, SCDF said. It added that multiple small explosions were heard within the building and these were believed to be from household aerosol cans.
Several bystanders, including those from as far as Kallang, took to social media platforms to share videos and pictures of black smoke billowing.
Mr Liu Chang Dong, 44, told The Straits Times that he was the one who “discovered the fire”.
The cleaner, who works in the building next door, said: “I was cleaning the floor, when I saw that there was smoke. I quickly told our security guard, who called the fire department.”
Five fire engines, two Red Rhinos, two fire bikes, 12 support vehicles and two ambulances were dispatched by the SCDF. It also deployed multiple water jets on the outside of the building to contain the fire.
Assistant Commissioner Ling Young Ern, the SCDF Operations Department Director told reporters at the scene that this is the largest deployment of SCDF resources for a fire in an industrial estate this year.
It is also the first time that four aerial appliances had to be used to quell a fire.
The cause of fire is still under investigation.

Olympic badminton finalist is a stunning Malaysian model too
PETALING JAYA: Not only is Goh Liu Ying a world-class shuttler, she is also a stunning model.
The social media account of Goh, who will be playing in the badminton mixed doubles final in the Rio Olympics tonight, shows her dedication to her sport.
And it includes her more photogenic side in a number of modelling shots.
She was on the cover of Malaysia’s Long Life magazine in April 2015 and she is the model for kinesiology tape.
In an April interview with 988 radio station, Goh said that she took up modelling lessons in 2015.
When asked about her plans post-retirement, she said she will consider acting as she wants to try out something new.
Goh and her badminton partner Chan Peng Soon made Malaysia proud when they beat China to earn a berth in the mixed doubles finals.
The duo will be playing against Indonesia’s Liliyana Natsir and Tontowi Ahmad Wednesday at 11.30pm (Malaysian time).
