Chinese swimmer Fu Yuanhui calls China and Hong Kong 'one family'
HONG KONG – China’s Fu Yuanhui, the Olympic swimmer who won legions of fans in Rio for her joyful over-enthusiasm, said Saturday that Chinese people and Hong Kongers were “one family” as fears grow about Beijing’s increasing influence in the semi-autonomous city.
Fu is part of a 64-strong delegation of Chinese athletes that arrived in Hong Kong on Saturday for a three-day tour, with thousands of tickets to sports events snapped up by residents ahead of their arrival.
“I have always felt that we are one family, we are brothers and sisters,” Fu, 20, said at a press conference when asked about her reception in Hong Kong.
The swimming star said she had many fans in the city and had been looking forward to the visit.
Fu had won praise online for speaking frankly about having her period while competing in Rio – long a taboo subject for female athletes – while her goofy and charming pool-side antics have also turned her into a viral sensation.
Despite winning bronze rather than gold, Fu has shot to popularity for her likeable manner.
“I utilised my prehistorical powers,” she said in one interview after coming third in the women’s 100 metre backstroke.
“I like Hong Kong, and always wanted to come. But I didn’t get a chance to because I was always busy training,” she said. “There’s a lot of good food and fun places in Hong Kong, I’m looking forward to them.”
Some have seen the visit as a bridge-building exercise between mainland China and the city, where support for an independence movement has surged. Many young activists are frustrated at the failure of mass pro-democracy rallies in 2014 to win any political reforms from Beijing.
Hong Kong was handed back to China by Britain in 1997 under an agreement that protects its freedoms for 50 years, but concerns have grown that such freedoms are now fading as Beijing increases its influence across a range of areas, from politics to the media.
“The delegation’s visit is definitely a good thing to promote Hong Kong citizens’ identification with Chinese glory and pride,” Zhang Dingzhun, deputy director of the Center for Basic Laws of Hong Kong and Macau at Shenzhen University, told the Global Times on Wednesday.
The city’s chief secretary Carrie Lam also said Saturday the visit illustrated the good relationship between the two places.

Meet the man who worked till 101
TOKYO – Japan is world famous for its long working hours and long working lives. But Fukutaro Fukui still makes most of his countrymen look like shirkers. At the age of 70, when most of his compatriots have already enjoyed several years of retirement, the former securities house executive began a new career as a clerk at a lottery sales broker, Tokyo Takara Shokai.
The job lasted 31 years, with Fukui making a one-hour commute daily into central Tokyo until he retired at the age of 101, becoming one of Japan’s oldest known “salarymen,” as office workers are sometimes called here.
Now three years into retirement at the age of 104, Fukui said he was motivated mainly by a belief that the desire to work is a deep-seated human instinct and money should not be a primary motive. “It does not matter what we achieved or if we were promoted. I have worked just because it is my instinct.” His three-decade last job was not a particularly exciting one, at least by the standards of his previous roles in finance and mergers and acquisitions: it involved mainly counting money and lottery tickets.
But he enjoyed it: “I sometimes climbed the stairs by myself to the office, carrying a suitcase with tens of thousands of lottery tickets and even walked faster than younger colleagues,” he recalled at the retirement home where he lives in the city of Chigasaki, on the outskirts of Tokyo.
In Fukui’s case, loyalty to a former university classmate, his best friend Tamazo Mochizuki, was a key factor. The two met while studying economics at Tokyo’s Keio University and both originally dreamt of becoming economic researchers. However, World War II prevented Fukui’s dreams from coming true. He was conscripted and sent to Manchuria for military service.

First case of locally-transmitted Zika virus infection reported in Singapore: MOH, NEA
The Ministry of Health and National Environment Agency on Saturday (Aug 27) said a 47-year-old female Malaysian has been infected with the Zika virus. As she had not travelled to Zika-affected areas recently, she was likely to have been infected in Singapore.

First case of locally transmitted Zika infection reported in Singapore
Singapore has had its first case of locally transmitted infection of the Zika virus, the Ministry of Health (MOH) and National Environment Agency (NEA) said in a joint statement today (Aug 27).
The patient is a 47-year-old Malaysian woman who lives at Block 102, Aljunied Crescent, which is not in in an active dengue cluster but near two active ones.
She was tested positive for Zika today, two days after she started to develop fever, rash and conjunctivitis.
She is currently well and recovering, and is in hospital for observation at Tan Tock Seng Hospital’s Communicable Diseases Centre (CDC).
The patient, who works in Singapore, had not travelled to Zika-affected areas recently, hence she was likely to have been infected in Singapore.
The MOH is currently screening her close contacts including household members.
Three people – two in a family who live in Aljunied Crescent and an individual who works in the area – have also preliminarily tested positive for Zika based on their urine samples.
They are pending further confirmation tests, the MOH and NEA said.
They added: “With the presence of Zika in our region and the volume of travel by Singaporeans as well as tourists, it is inevitable that there will be imported cases of Zika into Singapore. There is also risk of subsequent local transmission, as the Aedes mosquito vector is present here.”
While precautionary measures have been stepped up, the authorities warned of more cases as most infected persons may display mild or no symptoms.
Health Minister Gan Kim Yong said: “The MOH and NEA are working together to carry out vector control and testing of residents in that area with fever and rashes so as to reduce the risk of further spread. I encourage those who are unwell and with these symptoms to visit their doctors for medical attention. We have also alerted our clinics in the area to look out for suspect cases and refer them to the CDC for testing.”
For now, all suspect cases of Zika virus infection will be isolated while awaiting confirmation of the blood test results.
