Palu residents and the Palu Police were alarmed on Monday by a suspicious package in front of the Bank Central Asia (BCA) building in Palu, Central Sulawesi.
Although Palu is a more than four-hour drive from Poso, a conflict area and home to the East Indonesia Mujahidin (MIT) guerilla group, the conflict and violence have made residents wary.
Local Ramsabiah Razak, 21, said she noticed something wrapped in yellow cloth in front of BCA at 8:30 a.m. At first she was not alarmed, but after a few hours when it was there, her friend Evi became suspicious and called the police
The Palu Police sent a bomb squad to the building on Jl. Muhammad Hatta in East Palu, but the package turned out to be harmless.
Palu Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Basya Radyananda said it was a Tupperware container that contained not a bomb but books.
“It’s just something that someone left there. It’s not bomb,” Basya said.

Blistering barnacles! Exhibition shows dark side of Tintin creator
PARIS – A huge new exhibition about Tintin creator Herge does not shy away from showing how the cartoonist pined to be taken seriously as an artist nor his shame at his passivity during the Nazi occupation of Belgium.
“Herge”, which opens Wednesday at the Grand Palais in Paris, aims to lift some of the mystery that surrounds the enigmatic Belgian cartoonist Georges Remi, who lived in the shadow of his boy hero.
It shows how the runaway success of the adventures of the young reporter became both a blessing and a curse for Herge, frustrating his hopes of being seen as an abstract painter.
Nor does the exhibition, which claims to be the biggest retrospective of the artist ever assembled, try to gloss over his wartime work for a collaborationist Belgian newspaper.
Curator Jerome Neutres told AFP that although a section of the show was dedicated to his work during the war, “an art exhibition is not a court of history”.
“The period was a great source of pain for Herge,” he said. “He himself greatly regretted his cowardice.” Like very many others, Neutres argued, the cartoonist slipped into a kind of “passivity and neutrality” after the German army occupied Belgium in 1940.

“He felt very guilty although he did not collaborate actively,” Neutres added. “There is an interview in the show where he is clearly marked by this and it remains a stain on his career.” Nevertheless, the “war was a hugely rich creative period for him”, the curator added.
Neutres said the main aim of the show, which runs till January 15, was to show the breadth of Herge’s talent, not just as a great storyteller and artist but a brilliant graphic designer.
“We believe that from the beginning Herge positioned himself as an artist with a capital ‘A’,” who sought inspiration from painters as diverse as Holbein, Miro and Rembrandt.
“When you see what work he collected – and we have some of it in the show – it is of incredibly contemporary artists such as the minimalist Lucio Fontana and pop artist Roy Lichtenstein.” Herge, who died aged 75 in 1983, drew 24 Tintin books in all, which have sold more than 250 million copies.
Neutres insisted that Tintin was a modern “masterpiece because it has been so universal, it has been translated into 100 languages and is still being translated today.” The exhibition also documents his often pained private life and shows how his friendship with a young Chinese art student Zhang Chongren helped him deepen the storylines of his books.
Tintin first appeared in the conservative Catholic newspaper Le Vingtieme Siecle (The 20th Century) in 1929, and the first book “Tintin in the Land of the Soviets” a year later.
A new edition of the book will published for the first time in colour in January in time for the centenary of the Russian revolution.

Cousin of Gareth Bale's fiancee flees to Malaysia with millions
PETALING JAYA – Welsh football star Gareth Bale and his fiancee Emma Rhys-Jones are receiving police protection after a relative vanished with valuables linked to a drug gang.
Emma’s cousin, model Epiphany Dring, 27, was last seen by her family five weeks ago and British police believe she may be in Malaysia, the Daily Mail reported.
According to the report, Bale’s hotel room was being protected by armed police after Dring is believed to have disappeared with a suitcase containing valuables estimated to cost around £1mil (RM5,349,800).
The suitcase is believed to contain watches, drugs and £300,000 (RM1.6mil) in cash.
Emma’s family had been targeted in several arson attacks over the suitcase, which is believed to be linked to a feud with a drug gang.
The Mail reported that cars belonging to Emma’s grandparents and aunt had been torched in North Wales. Two cars belonging to the aunt were set on fire in North Wales. Cars were also burnt outside the house of Emma’s grandparents.
Police in North Wales have charged a 22-year-old man with criminal damage and arrested a 54-year-old woman on suspicion of making threats to kill.
Armed police were stationed outside Bale’s hotel room in Gran Canaria, Spain, before Real Madrid’s game against Las Palmas on Saturday.
London’s The Sun newspaper reported a source as saying: “There were three armed police posted outside the rooms, obviously there to make sure there were no unwanted visitors.
“It was pretty extreme for such a luxury hotel, renowned for its old-fashioned charm.”

Bangkok on flood alert with forecast for more rain this week
With more heavy rain expected to hit the capital this week, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has instructed officials to monitor main roads as well as 300 flood-prone secondary roads and housing estates.
The BMA also dispatched pumps to drain water from flood-hit communities along Klong Prem Prachakorn in Don Muang district while district chief Wandee Sonchai admitted drainage was made particularly difficult because the swollen canal was the district’s main drainage channel.
As the Meteorological Department warned of heavy rain covering 70 per cent of Bangkok until Friday, deputy governor Amorn Kitchawengkul said the BMA’s Drainage and Sewerage Department would work with respective district offices to release water and add pumps at vulnerable areas including agricultural land in Lat Krabang, Min Buri and Nong Chok districts.
With Friday likely to see the heaviest rain, Amorn said district offices would inform canal-side residents – including those near Klong Prawetburirom, Klong Mahasawat and Klong Saen |Saeb – to brace for possible overflows.
Heavy rain tipped, but low tide
Bangkok residents along the Chao Phraya River had less to worry about as this was a low-tide period, he said.
BMA officials would also work with nearby provinces to plan for better flood management in connecting areas such as Soi Baring and Muang Thong Thani, he added.
BMA deputy spokesperson Benjasai Keeyapat said that as rain continued to fall in most parts of the country and the Royal Irrigation Department increased the rate they are releasing water into the Chao Phraya, the BMA was closely watching how the situation might affect residents in areas outside flood barriers.
Drainage and Sewerage director Sompong Wiangkaew said the department was working flat-out to relieve flooding in Bangkok, but with continuous heavy rain, flooding was virtually inevitable.
“We have to understand that Bangkok is situated in a low-lying plain, so it is prone to flooding. With the past weekend’s heavy rain that submerged parts of Northern Bangkok, we were able to drain most of the flooding within three hours, which was an acceptable rate,” Sompong said.
However, he admitted that some alleys were still flooded and officials were trying their best to remedy the situation.
Sompong cautioned that in the case of rain exceeding 100 millimetres for more than two hours, there would be flooding.
“Even though flooding is not 100-per-cent preventable, we’re sure that we can drain the water within three hours.”

AirAsia sponsors Korean drama about aviation crew
Low-cost carrier AirAsia has announced its sponsorship of a Korean drama revolving around romance between aviation crew members.
Starring Lee Sang-Yoon and Kim Ha-Neul, On the Way to the Airport follows the romantic relationships of several 30-something pilots and cabin crew members who work for AirAsia.

Taiwan braces for Typhoon Megi
Northern and Eastern Taiwan should brace for strong winds and heavy rainfall brought on by Typhoon Megi throughout today, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).
The bureau said effects from Typhoon Megi were set to be at their most intense in Taiwan throughout today and Wednesday.
As of 5:30 a.m. Monday, Megi was centred 490 kilometers east-southeast of Hualien on Taiwan’s east coast, moving in a west-northwesterly direction at 21 kilometers per hour.
Megi is expected to make landfall between Hualien and Taitung with torrential rainfall and winds. Eastern Taiwan is expected to take the brunt of the incoming storm, according to CWB.
Huge waves were recorded off the coasts of Su’ao, Hualien and Taitung, the CWB reported, with many ranging as high as 3 or 4 meters tall.
Hurricane-force winds, which hit Level 12 on the Beaufort scale, were recorded at Orchid Island yesterday.
Violent winds also swept through Taitung County’s Green Island Monday night as Megi neared Taiwan.
The bureau forecast strong winds ranging from Level 6 to 11 in parts of Northern Taiwan (Keelung, Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan Hsinchu City and Hsinchu County) and Eastern Taiwan (Yilan, Hualien and Taitung) for most of today.
If Megi moves along its predicted path into the Taiwan Strait after landfall, southwesterly winds caused by the typhoon were set to dump torrential rainfall on parts of southwestern Taiwan, the bureau forecast.
A land warning for Megi was issued Monday morning.
Nationwide government agencies and military troops are on standby to deliver disaster relief.
The Taiwan Water Corporation (TWC) urged the public to store up water ahead of the typhoon and to cut back on running water usage in its aftermath, as the storm was expected to leave water supplies highly turbid for days.
The TWC has set up an emergency task force in response to the typhoon. The company urged the public to shut down water pumps in case of an outage to prevent the overheating of pump motors.
Produce prices have risen in anticipation of the typhoon, despite an increase in supply.
The price of cabbages, for example, have risen by as much as 14.1 per cent.
Public Transportation Updates
The Taiwan High Speed Rail announced that all bullet train services would be suspended on Tuesday.
The Taiwan Railways Administration announced that all trains were suspended Tuesday with the exception of local train services.
Two domestic flights between Taitung and Orchid Island scheduled for today have been cancelled.
International flights operated by United Airlines have been rescheduled to depart from Taiwan earlier than scheduled.
China Southern Airlines has cancelled 12 flights, while Xiamen Airlines has cancelled five flights between Taiwan and mainland China today.
Japan Airlines has bumped up the departure times of two flights, while 22 flights by budget carrier Tigerair were either cancelled, suspended or rescheduled. Peach Aviation has cancelled 14 flights originally scheduled to depart today.
International flights between Taipei and Hong Kong, Osaka, Fukuoka, Seoul, Kaohsiung and Hong Kong have been cancelled today.
Today’s international flights from Kaohsiung to Hong Kong, as well as from Taipei to the cities of Hong Kong, Osaka, Fukuoka and Seoul have been cancelled.
Three flights from Osaka, Fukuoka and Seoul slated to arrive in Taipei on Wednesday have also been cancelled.
The eastern section of the Southern Cross-Island Highway between the 153K and 200K mark will be sealed off in case of landslides and falling rocks.
Alishan Forest Railway services between Chiayi and Fenchihu are also suspended today and tomorrow.

Dangerously skinny K-pop girl groups
A member of a Seoul-based college dance group Lee Hyo-min (not her real name) says she has no fancy tricks when it comes to dieting. She simply “starves” herself, said the 22-year-old.
“I drink water and iced Americano,” the aspiring dancer told The Korea Herald. “If I get really hungry, I have one bite of pizza or something that the group has ordered.”
According to Lee, “just not eating” is the most effective way to lose weight. It is also easier than counting calories or calculating the nutritional balance of each meal. When asked about potential health risks, Lee replied that as of now, a slim figure takes priority over long-term well-being. She stressed, however, that she eats one to two “normal” meals when she is not dieting.
Looking like the members of K-pop girl groups on screen takes tremendous effort, according to Lee. “Some of the skinniest girls in our group look chubby on camera,” she said. “Your body has to have almost no fat to look good.”
In the world of K-pop, which touts stick-thin figures as presentable, achievable and even admirable, there seems to be a fine line between dieting and starvation, with the pressure to look slender often resulting in dangerous consequences.
Last month, it was revealed that JinE of girl group Oh My Girl would be taking a break due to anorexia. JinE had shown symptoms of the eating disorder and had been receiving treatment since her debut, the group’s management agency WM Entertainment announced on Aug. 25.
The girl group member is currently resting in her hometown of Pohang and now weighs a little over 40 kilograms, according to reports. The petite singer, standing at 159 centimeters tall, formerly weighed 30-something kilograms.
Symptoms of anorexia include not eating coupled with a poor body image, according to Baik In-kyung, a professor of food and nutrition at Kookmin University.
The influence of the mass media “cannot be ignored” when it comes to anorexic patients in Korea, according to psychiatrist Kim Hwan-ki.

“The media glamorizes the unrealistic bodies of a few,” Kim wrote in a column in March, leading to patients’ “obsession over unrealistically thin bodies” and “a strange sense of pride in being unhealthily underweight.”
Other K-pop singers have confessed to post-dieting health problems. In February, Sojung of girl group Ladies’ Code mentioned on JTBC’s variety programme “Girl Spirit” that she did not have her period for nearly one year after she started dieting.
“My hormone levels were (similar to) those of a menopausal woman,” said the 163-centimeter tall singer, who debuted after being a finalist on season one of “The Voice of Korea” in 2012. Seeing herself on television for the first time was “shocking,” she said, and prompted her to shed 11 kilograms, with her weight dropping from 49 kilograms to 38 kilograms.
Singer Park Bo-ram admitted on a May episode of “King of Mask Singer” that her vocal range became drastically limited after she lost 32 kilograms.
Girl groups share testimonials of extreme diet regimens on television, from the “cup” routine — where all contents of a meal fit inside one small paper cup — to the self-explanatory “one meal a day” method.
Ladies’ Code’s Sojung also revealed a book where she recorded her diet. One entry read: “one orange, 15 cherry tomatoes, one piece of sweet pumpkin.”
Korean society’s standards for a “thin” figure also appear to be extremely harsh.
In 2014, Tiffany of Girls’ Generation said on the talk show “Radio Star” that with a weight of 48 kilograms and a height of 162 centimeters, she was the heaviest of the (Girls’ Generation) members and teased by other group members for being a “pig.”
A chart that has been circulating on Korean websites juxtaposes two types of weight for a certain height — the “standard” weight versus the “pretty” weight. According to this chart, whose source is unidentified, for a woman who is 165 centimeters tall, the “standard” weight is 59.8 kilograms; the “pretty” weight is some 9 kilograms lighter, at 50.4 kilograms — but most celebrities claim to be much lighter than both figures.
As of 2013, some 17.5 per cent of Korean women aged 19 to 24 are underweight, according to a report released in March by the National Research Institute of Health. Another NIH report found that between 2005 and 2015, 34.7 per cent of nonobese female middle and high school students considered themselves “fat.”
Despite the negative health impact, it is hard for celebrities to avoid extreme dieting, said makeup artist Park So-jung, primarily because of how different their facial features and bodies look onscreen.
“Losing weight makes your eyes and nose pop out (and) become more distinct,” said Park. “There’s a reason they say it’s the equivalent to getting plastic surgery.”
“It’s safe to say that girl groups you see onscreen are pretty much dieting all the time,” said a representative from a K-pop management, agency who wished to remain unnamed. “We do try to enforce healthy guidelines for (our trainees),” but celebrities go out of their way to diet, as they are unable to escape the pressure from both the media and audiences, the representative said.

England manager Allardyce exposed in newspaper sting
LONDON – England manager Sam Allardyce has been secretly filmed giving advice on how to circumnavigate transfer rules and mocking his predecessor Roy Hodgson’s voice, the Daily Telegraph reported on Monday.
Allardyce, 61, was filmed telling what he thought was a group of Far East investors it was possible to “get around” Football Association regulations preventing third parties from owning players.
The men were actually undercover Telegraph reporters.
Allardyce, appointed England manager in July, agreed to travel to Singapore and Hong Kong as an ambassador for their fictitious firm for a fee of 400,000 pounds (S$705,592).
He referred to Hodgson, who stepped down after England’s Euro 2016 elimination by Iceland, as “Woy” – mimicking his speech impediment.
British tabloid The Sun was rebuked by the FA for referring to Hodgson as ‘Woy’ in 2012, calling it “unacceptable”.
Allardyce criticised Hodgson’s approach at Euro 2016, saying he was “too indecisive”, and said he should have told assistant manager Gary Neville to “sit down and shut up”.
He explained England’s failure at the tournament by saying their players have a “psychological barrier” and “can’t cope”.
He also said the FA had “stupidly spent 870 million pounds” rebuilding Wembley and complained that Prince William, the FA president, had not attended last week’s Euro 2020 launch event in London.
In a statement sent to the Telegraph, the FA said: “We have asked The Daily Telegraph to provide us with the full facts in relation to this matter.” The paper said Allardyce had not responded to a request for comment.
British media reports said the FA was investigating the story.
The former manager of clubs including Bolton Wanderers, West Ham United and Sunderland, Allardyce was appointed England manager on a two-year contract.
England won 1-0 in Slovakia in their opening 2018 World Cup qualifier earlier this month and face Malta at Wembley in their next game on October 8.

Taiwan shuts down as Typhoon Megi strikes
Taipei – Taiwan went into shutdown Tuesday (Sept 27) as the island faces its third typhoon in two weeks, with thousands evacuated, schools and offices closed across the island and hundreds of flights disrupted.
Typhoon Megi is expected to make landfall in eastern Taiwan later Tuesday but is already bringing widespread violent winds and torrential rain as it nears the island.
More than 5,000 people have been evacuated from their homes and around 2,000 are in shelters, according to the Central Emergency Operation Center. About 36,000 households have lost power due to the typhoon so far.
A total of 575 international and domestic flights were cancelled as of Tuesday morning, and 109 delayed. Most trains were also halted.
Television footage showed powerful waves surging past breakwaters in northeastern Yilan county and outlying Orchid Island.
Ahead of the storm, more than 3,700 tourists had already been evacuated at the weekend from Orchid Island and Green Island – both popular with visitors.
At 0030 GMT, Megi was 220 kilometres (137 miles) southeast of the eastern county of Hualien, packing gusts of up to 198 kilometres (123 miles) per hour.
It is moving at 18 kilometres (11.2 miles) an hour – slower than previously forecast – delaying the time of landfall to around 0900 GMT Tuesday, according to Taiwan’s weather bureau.
Hualien and Taitung, which are also popular with visitors for their coastlines and landscapes, will be in the firing line.
Those areas are still trying to recover from damage brought by Super Typhoon Meranti earlier this month – the strongest storm for 21 years to hit Taiwan.
Meranti, which left one dead in Taiwan before killing another 28 as it moved to eastern China, was followed closely by the smaller Typhoon Malakas.
Mountainous regions in eastern Taiwan could see a total of up to 900 millimetres (35 inches) of rain through Wednesday, increasing the risk of landslides.
More than 35,000 soldiers are on standby to help with disaster relief.
