PSI to be in high end of moderate range on Sunday as slight haze moves towards Strait of Malacca: NEA
SINGAPORE – Singapore may experience slightly hazy conditions on Saturday (Oct 15) night and on Sunday, the National Environment Agency (NEA) said.
“Smoke plumes and slight haze from hotspots in central Sumatra were observed to be blown by the prevailing west-southwest winds towards the Strait of Malacca,” NEA said in an advisory issued on Saturday evening.
A total of 20 hotspots were detected in Sumatra, the agency said.
On Sunday, the air quality is expected to worsen, but it is not likely to reach unhealthy levels.
The Pollution Standards Index (PSI) is forecast to be in the high end of the moderate range.
The one-hour PM2.5 concentration is expected to fluctuate between ‘Normal’ and the low end of ‘Elevated’.
Thundery showers are forecast for Singapore in the early morning of Sunday.
Given the air quality forecast for the next 24 hours, everyone can continue with normal activities, NEA said.

Singapore Airlines bans Samsung Galaxy Note 7 from flights
SINGAPORE – The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphone will no longer be allowed on all Singapore Airlines’ flights.
The carrier made the announcement on its Facebook page on Saturday (Oct 15), adding that anyone found in possession of the device will be denied boarding.
According to the post, the Galaxy Note 7 “will be prohibited from being brought on board all our flights on person, in carry-on baggage or checked-in baggage with effect from 16 October, 0000hrs (Singapore Time)”.
The phone, which has seen its batteries emitting smoke or catching fire from overheating, is also not allowed to be shipped as cargo.
The announcement comes after US officials said on Friday (Oct 14) that all Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphones will be banned from airplanes, and those found travelling with the handsets may be fined and have their devices confiscated.
The fallout from the Galaxy Note 7 is estimated to cost Samsung Electronics more than 7 trillion won (S$8.5 trillion), according to the company and industry analysts Friday.
