Bibiano Fernandes set for title defense against Reece McLaren at ONE: AGE OF DOMINATION in Manila

As if ONE: AGE OF DOMINATION wasn’t stacked enough. The December 2 fight card which takes place at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines, already features a star-studded roster of talented fighters, including ONE Heavyweight World Champion Brandon “The Truth” Vera. But the latest addition to the bout list is one Filipino fans will definitely appreciate.

ONE Championship has just announced that ONE Bantamweight World Champion Bibiano “The Flash” Fernandes (19-3) of Brazil is set to defend his title against rising young star Reece “Lightning” McLaren (9-3) of Toowoomba, Australia. 

Fernandes, 36, is widely considered as one of the top bantamweight talents in the world. A 5-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion and black belt holder, he is on an 11-fight win streak, having remained unbeaten since 2010. He captured the ONE Championship title in 2013 and is one of the promotion’s longest running champions.

A winner of his last three bouts by exciting finish, Fernandes was last seen inside the ONE Championship cage last January when he took on top Filipino bantamweight contender Kevin “The Silencer” Belingon.

Belingon was supposed to test Fernandes’ striking ability, but was unable to mount any meaningful offense as the Brazilian took matters to the ground quickly to finish the bout by submission.

Now, Fernandes takes on a new challenge in the form of top prospect McLaren.

McLaren, 25, is a former BRACE Bantamweight Champion and is a relative newcomer to ONE Championship, having just joined the promotion last December.

Virtually unknown at the time, McLaren shocked the world with a scintillating performance against Evolve MMA ward Mark “Mugen” Striegl, a highly-regarded opponent. McLaren overcame nearly being finished by Striegl to win by rear naked choke within three rounds.

It was a noteworthy performance, and one that certainly put the division on notice.

McLaren’s next bout came against top prospect from Tajikistan, Muin Gafurov. Again, McLaren was faced with a tough matchup but showcased his elite skills, outclassing Gafurov with his world-class grappling to earn a shot at Fernandes’ belt.

The fight card for ONE: AGE OF DOMINATION features some of the best MMA talents from the Philippines and is headlined by a ONE Heavyweight World Championship title bout between defending champion Brandon Vera and unbeaten Japanese challenger Hideki Sekine.

Football: Mourinho calls on players to act like men

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom – Manchester United’s players must behave like men in the wake of their humiliating 4-0 Premier League hammering by Chelsea, manager Jose Mourinho said on Monday.

The Portuguese coach – who sat helplessly as he endured his worst defeat in the Premier League against the club who sacked him last term – wants an immediate reaction against city rivals Manchester City in Wednesday’s League Cup clash.

“We are really, really sad, but again this is not for kids, this is for men and…we have to be men and work for the next one,” the 53-year-old told the club’s TV station MUTV.

Mourinho, whose side have won just once in their past six Premier League games, said he was sanguine about United’s recent results and took succour from the fact they would drop points when they play each other.

They trail the trio of table-toppers Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool by six points.

However, their haul of 14 points after nine matches is United’s second worst in their Premier League history – the team in 2014/15 garnering just 13.

“I would prefer to play (next) in the Premier League,” said Mourinho.

“It’s a bad feeling in the Premier League.

With the combination of results the gap to the top is six points.

“We have had a very difficult period of matches.

“We lost points this week and, even in the match when we played phenomenal against Stoke, we lost points then.

Now we need to win matches.

“I am not saying they are easy ones, but we have Burnley, we have Swansea, West Ham, Sunderland, Middlesbrough – matches that we need to win and the top four, the top five, they have to play between themselves like we did this week against Chelsea and Liverpool.

“They are going to lose points too, so we are in the run, but there is no way to hide because I think our faces speak by themselves.”

At ASEAN meet, ministers stand firm on punitive measures for drug crimes

LAST week, ASEAN ministers met in Singapore to discuss the newly launched regional 10-year plan to fight the drug menace.

Leaders at the 5th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Drug Matters assessed the current climate on drug issues facing the region, also reviewing the probabilities of significant policy change, and if alterations were a feasible option that would meet their concrete goals.

In an opening speech, Teo Chee Hean, Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security stated, “To achieve a drug-free ASEAN and prevent harm from drugs, we must tackle the problem at all levels.”

However, reviewing the conclusive agreement made by the ASEAN ministers, alternative approaches to drug policy did not appear to be something they intended to consider.

On the contrary, they reinforced the same methods towards drugs and are encouraging similar disciplinary measures.

The consensus to knuckle down on strict drug policy and encourage further criminalization appeared to resound with the leaders.

They confirmed the new 10-year plan to combat drug abuse and distribution, highlighting the need for ASEAN governments to stand together in rejection of any alternative solutions or legalization, sticking to the previous goal of forcefully ridding all drugs from region.

The ministers concluded that pursuing the reduction of opiates and methamphetamines were to be of main concern, fortifying stringent methods of deterrence with strict disciplinary actions.

More so, and contrary to countless Western studies, they also opposed any probability that cannabis has medicinal effects, encouraging complete rejection of possible legalization of the plant for any use.

“Aside from preventive drug education, we have also enhanced our enforcement efforts.

“We enhanced our laws in 2013 to impose harsher penalties for those who supply drugs to the young.” stated Amrin Amin, Singaporean Parliamentary Secretary, and Ministry of Home Affairs in a speech at the global meeting.

Many NGOs and civil society groups have urged ASEAN governments to endorse and protect the right to life, promote decriminalization and consider alternative health-focused solutions to drug reform.

Last April, the UN General Assembly Special Session (UNGASS) stated that the objective of drug policy should improve the health and welfare of humankind. UNGASS also encouraged the importance of evidence-based drug treatment with rehabilitation opportunities, due-process, and to prevent cruel or degrading punishments.

“For decades, ASEAN has imposed a punitive and repressive approach that has only served to increase the stigma and dehumanization of people who use drugs, without improving the health and welfare of the communities in the region,” said Anand Chabungbam, Coordinator of the Asian Network of People who Use Drugs, encouraging ASEAN to reevaluate their measures on drug solutions.

“This region has some of the world’s highest rates of HIV and viral hepatitis among people who inject drugs, and governments must support the provision of harm reduction measures that have been emphatically proven to save lives.”

Ten years prior to the meeting, a stern plan was put forth endeavouring to rid all drugs from ASEAN by 2015.

The attempt, however, has clearly not been particularly successful, and has instead caused great harm to life throughout South East Asia, specifically in the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore where some of the harshest penalties for use can be found.

In the Philippines, for example, more than 3,000 drug suspects have died in the five months after President Rodrigo Duterte took office in June. The president’s unorthodox crime-fighting methods have triggered the concern of Western governments but the leader has shown no sign of relenting.

At least weekend’s ASEAN meet, the same doggedness could be seen among leaders present. Regardless of the costs, ASEAN has decided to continue with their plan to rid drugs from the region by employing severe and often drastic measures.

'Arrogant' Bob Dylan angers Nobel authorities

Singer-songwriter Bob Dylan is known for being uncomfortable in the spotlight. But, following his elusiveness after being awarded the Nobel Prize for literature earlier this month, the authority behind the award may now be having second thoughts on their decision.

Speaking late last week to Swedish television channel SVT, Per Wastberg, who chairs the Nobel Committee for Literature 2016, described Dylan’s lack of response to the accolade as “rude and arrogant.”

Last week, the musician’s website removed its mention of the prize. Wastberg commented to SVT that the news was “hardly surprising. He seems to be a very grumpy and reluctant man, and I didn’t find it surprising at all.”

David Gaines, professor of English at Southwestern University in Texas, whose academic research includes Dylan’s literary value, told CNBC via telephone that the artist’s “first and foremost priority is performing his songs.”

Gaines added that Dylan’s public “statements are rarely about himself,” citing the examples of his comments on the deaths of George Harrison, Johnny Cash and Muhammad Ali.

When asked if Dylan would travel to Stockholm to formally receive his award in December, Gaines speculated that, “he’ll be there,” despite the musician’s apparent dislike of public events. “He’s going to do what he’s going to do, when he’s ready,” Gaines said.

Sara Danius, secretary of the Swedish Academy that awards Nobel Prizes, last week said that she had given up trying to contact the musician.

This year, each Nobel Prize is worth 8 million Swedish kronor (S$1.25 million). Boris Pasternak, 1958 winner of the literature prize, and Jean Paul Sartre, who was awarded the accolade in 1964, are the only two winners to have turned down the literature prize.

Meryl Streep on the secret to a happy marriage

The 29th Tokyo International Film Festival got on to an unofficial start a day before the actual event with a press conference held especially for Meryl Streep.

The Oscar winner is in the capital of Japan as her latest movie Florence Foster Jenkins is the curtain raiser for the film festival which begins tomorrow (Oct 25).

“It’s very exciting and it’s a great honour that Florence Foster Jenkins has been chosen as Opening Film,” she tells journalists at a press conference.

“I bring greetings from (director) Stephen Frears, (co-stars) Hugh Grant and Simon Helberg, all of whom are working.

“But I’m currently unemployed, so I was available to come,” she deadpans.

In the film, Streep plays a socialite who – despite her shortcomings as a singer – decides to pursue her passion for singing.

Although the film called for her character to sing off key, Streep – ever the consummate actress – hired a singing coach to prepare for the role.

“I did try to learn how to sing these arias properly, so I got a very good, true opera coach and he taught me the arias correctly. Then, the last two week of the two-month preparation, we just screwed around with them,” she shares.

Streep, 67, is one of the most celebrated actresses of our time. She has garnered 19 Oscar nominations – the most for any actor or actress – and won three; Best Supporting Actress for Kramer Vs Kramer, and Best Actress for Sophie’s Choice and The Iron Lady.

While older actresses are constantly lamenting the lack of good roles in Hollywood, Streep has been consistently working since she started in the industry in 1971.

She does acknowledge the existence of ageism in the film industry. However, the actress says good roles for older actresses can be found on TV these days.

“I think there has been ageism and a lot of so-called market-driven decisions. But I was 58 when I made Mamma Mia! And that was the most popular film I ever made. I think the rules are being broken and thank goodness.

“I think a lot of possibilities come from television, especially the long-form, serial television that we have now. It’s been very good for women and proven there’s an audience.”

Streep, who is usually guarded about her personal life, was candid when asked about the secret to her happy marriage. The actress is married to Don Gummer for 38 years and the couple has four children.

“I’m sure that it’s all because of him and his good nature,” Streep says. “And it’s also that he’s an artist, and that helps. It would be difficult to be married to someone who had a different life.”

It’s not all work for Streep on her trip to Japan. The actress, who portrayed celebrated chef Julia Child in the film Julie & Julia, took some time off to sample Japanese cuisine.

“Yesterday, we were in Kyoto and we went to a restaurant that has so many kinds of tofu. We have one kind of tofu (back) home. I’d never seen this kind of restaurant, and it was fantastic.”

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi will resume their perennial battle to be crowned the world’s best footballer after they headed the shortlist of 30 players for the 2016 Ballon d’Or announced on Monday.

Barcelona’s Argentine great Messi, who took the honour for a record fifth time last year, or Real Madrid’s Portuguese three-time winner Ronaldo have taken the coveted accolade every year since 2007, when AC Milan’s Kaka won.

Despite a dip in form this season, Ronaldo, who inspired Portugal to the Euro 2016 title and Real Madrid to the Champions League crown last season, is hot favourite to regain his title.

He is one of six Real Madrid players on the list with Gareth Bale, Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, Sergio Ramos and Pepe as the European champions boast more candidates than any other club.

Messi and his two Barcelona striking partners, Neymar and Luis Suarez, scorers of more than a century of goals between them in 2016, also feature on the list along with team mate Andres Iniesta.

Romantics will be delighted to see that Leicester City, fairytale winners of the Premier League, are represented by pauper-to-prince striker Jamie Vardy and England’s players’ player of the year, Algerian Riyad Mahrez.

Mahrez and Borussia Dortmund’s Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are the only players on the list who hail from outside Europe or South America.

France, with Antoine Griezmann, Hugo Lloris, Dimitri Payet and Paul Pogba, and Argentina, with Messi, Gonzalo Higuain, Sergio Aguero and Paulo Dybala, are the best-represented nations with four players each.

France Football magazine, who have awarded the Ballon d’Or every year since 1956, announced the shortlist, with the winner set to be announced in January.

For the past six years it was the FIFA Ballon d’Or until world football’s governing body ended its association with the award in September.

Kim Kardashian drops lawsuit over claims she faked Paris robbery

Reality TV star Kim Kardashian on Monday dropped a US defamation lawsuit against a website for claiming she had staged an armed robbery in Paris.

Kardashian withdrew the lawsuit filed this month in New York against US celebrity gossip site MediaTakeOut, according to a court document. The federal lawsuit was dropped without prejudice, meaning Kardashian could refile it.

MediaTakeOut had reported that Kardashian, 35, had faked the robbery and then filed a fraudulent insurance claim. The website and a lawyer for Kardashian did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

French police said she was robbed at gunpoint of some US$10 million in jewellery by masked men who tied her up in her Paris apartment early on Oct. 3.

The lawsuit had sought unspecified damages for defamation. It named MediaTakeOut.com and its founder, Fred Mwangaguhunga, as defendants.

Kardashian had been criticised for making herself vulnerable by posting photos of her US$4 million dollar engagement ring and other jewellery in the days before the Paris attack.
