Security tightened in Bali ahead of Interpol meeting expected to focus on ISIS threat

0

NUSA DUA – Indonesia has deployed 3,800 police personnel to secure the resort island of Bali ahead of the 85th Interpol General Assembly, attended by police chiefs and representatives from 167 countries, slated to kick off on Monday (Nov 7).

The four-day meeting is expected to spark controversy from hard-line groups, particularly given the presence of a delegation from Israel in Bali.

The National Police said they were aware of a number of threats and had prepared accordingly for the second-biggest event after the UN General Assembly, including from ISIS related groups in Indonesia.

“The Bali Police have been instructed to anticipate terror threats from ISIS-related groups or followers of Santoso,” said Bali Police operational division head Adj. Sr. Comr. Wayan Sri said on Sunday in Bali, referring to an Indonesian terrorist who was shot dead in Palu, Central Sulawesi, in July.

Santoso’s followers are believed to be hiding in the jungles of Palu.

Interpol has 191 member countries, of which 167 have confirmed their attendance at the event. Some 1,200 members of delegations, including member countries’ national police chiefs, are expected to attend the conference.

Indonesia Vice-President Jusuf Kalla is scheduled to open the conference, which will discuss assessing and tackling threats posed by returning foreign terrorist fighters among other issues.

Indonesia, where ISIS has exerted increasing influence on extremist cells, is set to push the 167 Interpol members attending the event for greater co-operation to contain the spread of ISIS in the Asia Pacific Region.

National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Boy Rafli Amar said Indonesia needed to push for greater co-operation especially on the extradition of Indonesians fighting alongside ISIS in Iraq and Syria.

As an initial move, Insp. Gen. Boy said the National Police would seek greater co-operation with police authorities in the Middle East. Indonesian fighters returning from Iraq and Syria have reportedly orchestrated a number of attacks in Indonesia.

One person on the wanted list is Bahrun Naim, who is linked to at least four terrorism plots in Indonesia, including a plan to attack Singapore with a rocket from Batam, Riau Islands.

“We expect that we can bring those fighters home. For example, many Indonesians have become victims because of attacks carried out by Bahrun’s groups in Indonesia. We brought home [TERRORIST]Umar Patek from Pakistan in the past, so we hope we can do the same with Bahrun,” Insp. Gen.Boy said.

He said he hoped all Interpol member countries could swiftly follow up any red notices on terrorism sent by Indonesia in the future.

There are currently around 300 Indonesian citizens fighting alongside ISIS in the Middle East.

Terrorism analyst Ridwan Habib from the University of Indonesia (UI) said Indonesia should be able to push for a scheme whereby a member country could directly send a red notice to a destination country.

Under the current system, Ridwan said, a member country must send its red notice to Interpol headquarters in Lyon, France. It is then delivered to the destination country to be followed up. Such red tape could hamper counterterrorism efforts that needed a swift response for better results, said Ridwan.

Ridwan said the Bali forum was the best opportunity to push for this reform. “If the decision is taken in Bali then it would be something revolutionary,” Ridwan said.

He said direct intelligence sharing had been practiced by intelligence agencies at the international level, so there was no reason for Interpol not to apply the same concept in order to step up the fight against terrorism.

GIC to acquire P3 logistics parks in S$3.7b deal

0

SINGAPORE: Sovereign wealth fund GIC will be acquiring P3 Logistics Parks, a company that owns, develops and manages 163 warehouses in Europe, in a deal worth €2.4 billion (S$3.7 billion).

In a joint media release on Monday (Nov 7), it was announced that GIC has signed a definitive agreement to acquire P3 from TPG Real Estate and its partner Ivanhoé Cambridge.

“The transaction values the business at €2.4 billion and is the largest European real estate transaction this year,” the statement said.

TPG Real Estate and Ivanhoé Cambridge acquired P3 in 2013 and over the last three years, P3 has more than doubled the size of the portfolio, which now includes 163 high quality warehouses in 62 locations across nine countries.

Ian Worboys, CEO of P3 said: “We are excited to partner with one of the world’s largest sovereign funds in GIC, and we look forward to delivering the same success for our new shareholder. GIC’s long-term investment strategy is closely aligned to our own approach, as a long-term owner and developer of high quality assets.”

Lee Kok Sun, Chief Investment Officer at GIC said that P3’s strong growth will continue given its diversified, income-producing portfolio and it’s substantial land bank.

“We are confident of the long-term potential of the European logistics sector, and look forward to expanding this attractive platform with the very capable P3 management team. GIC’s extensive experience in investing in logistics globally also allows us to add value to this partnership,” said Lee.

The transaction is subject to regulatory approval and is expected to close by the end of 2016.

Tennis: Murray marks world top spot with Paris triumph

0

Paris – Andy Murray celebrated his new world number one ranking with a first Paris Masters title on Sunday after defeating American John Isner 6-3, 6-7 (4/7), 6-4 in the final.

Murray, 29, will replace Novak Djokovic at the top of the rankings on Monday and claimed his eighth title of a remarkable season after extending his winning run to 19 matches.

“This has been an incredible journey for me to get to the top of the rankings,” said Murray, who will move 405 points above long-time rival Djokovic.

It is the Briton’s fourth title in succession after wins in Beijing, Shanghai and Vienna and his 14th career Masters 1000 triumph.

Murray entered his Tour-leading 12th final of the year having won all seven previous meetings with Isner, including straight-sets wins at Roland Garros in May and last week in Vienna.

For Isner, who was chasing a first title of the season, it was his third appearance in a Masters final after finishing runner-up at Indian Wells in 2012 and Cincinnati in 2013.

Hong Kong police, protesters clash over Beijing crackdown

0

HONG KONG – Police fired pepper spray in running battles with thousands of demonstrators on the streets of Hong Kong on Sunday as they tried to encircle China’s representative office in protest against Beijing’s attempts to stop independence activism.

Streets filled with mostly young people, many dressed in black, brought to mind weeks of pro-democracy marches in 2014.

This time they were protesting before a ruling due on Monday that is expected to bar two lawmakers from taking office in Hong Kong’s legislature.

The situation is seen by many of the territory’s legal and political elite as one of the biggest tests of Hong Kong’s independent rule of law that the global financial hub has faced since its handover to China nearly two decades ago.

Critics say the ruling from a top committee of China’s parliament essentially circumvents local courts.

The two lawmakers, Yau Wai-ching and Baggio Leung, had pledged allegiance to the “Hong Kong nation” and displayed a”Hong Kong is not China” banner during a swearing-in ceremony for the city’s legislative council in October. Their oaths were not accepted and their right to retake them is being challenged in the local courts by the autonomous Hong Kong government.

Close to a thousand police officers, some with riot shields and batons, and some behind temporary metal barricades, were deployed to prevent protesters surging towards the central government’s Liaison Office, viewed by many as a symbol of Beijing’s increasing influence on the free-wheeling city.

Chanting “Hong Kong Independence” among other slogans, the protesters, some with medical masks and cling film to shield their eyes, tried repeatedly to charge through police lines but were forced back. Several were arrested.

Also reminiscent of the 79-day democracy protests two years ago, many opened umbrellas to protect themselves from pepper spray and blocked a major road running past the China Liaison office, erecting makeshift barricades out of bamboo, wood and rubbish bins to hamper traffic. “We can’t just wait to die,” said 60-year-old protester Alexandra Wong who sat in the middle of the road with a yellow umbrella. “We must come out and resist, to wake up more people to the risks of China destroying our way of life.” The protesters were eventually dispersed by police after a nearly six-hour standoff.

“SEVERE BLOW” TO RULE OF LAW Calls for independence are considered taboo by Beijing’s Communist Party leaders who see Hong Kong as an “inalienable”part of China after more than a century of British rule.

The standing committee of China’s parliament, the National People’s Congress, this weekend discussed invoking a rarely used power to interpret Hong Kong’s mini “Basic Law” constitution to stop Yau, 25, and Leung, 30, from taking office.

China Central Television quoted national lawmakers as saying the pair were a threat to China’s “sovereignty and security”. “If this kind of situation continues it will harm the immediate interests of the people of Hong Kong … and the interests of national development. The Central Government cannot sit by indifferently,” they were quoted as saying.

As such, an NPC interpretation was “very timely and extremely necessary”, the report said.

Under a “one country, two systems” formula by which Hong Kong was returned to China in 1997, Beijing promised to grant the city a high degree of autonomy, including judicial freedom.

Martin Lee, a veteran democrat and barrister, said Beijing’s move to interpret the Basic Law would bind the hands of the Hong Kong court that will hear the government’s challenge against the pair. “(It) makes it impossible for the court to exercise its own judgment,” he said.

The Hong Kong Bar Association has said an intervention by Beijing now would deal a “severe blow” to the city’s judicial independence and undermine international confidence in Hong Kong’s autonomy. Chinese officials are expected to call a news conference on Monday morning regarding the situation.

Earlier on Sunday, thousands – including Yau and Leung -marched to the city’s financial district in protest. Organisers put the numbers at 11,000 while police said 8,000 turned out.

Bieber leads Europe MTV awards, ahead of Gaga

0

Rotterdam, Netherlands – Pop superstar Justin Bieber pipped Lady Gaga at the MTV Europe Music awards Sunday, snapping up the lion’s share as megastar Beyonce came away empty-handed.

In the high-energy show in the Dutch port of Rotterdam, the chart-topping Canadian singer’s legendary army of fans dubbed “Beliebers” helped him slay Gaga’s “monsters” to help him win three awards including for Biggest Fans.

Bieber also won Best Song for his pop hit “Sorry” and Best Canadian act.

Eccentric pop icon Lady Gaga, who once wore a dress made of meat, snapped up two awards, winning Best Female act and Best Look.

But in a surprise Beyonce – who like Bieber had been nominated in five categories and had dominated MTV’s signature Video Music Awards in New York in August – was denied a share of the honours.

The award for Best Video went to fast-rising Canadian R&B sensation The Weeknd for his “Starboy” beating out Beyonce’s “Formation” from her acclaimed album “Lemonade”.

Best Video is determined by MTV’s editorial team, but most categories are decided through fans’ voting The Weeknd performed his winning song, one of his few appearances ahead of a tour next year, emerging from a star-filled dome onto the Rotterdam stage.

The high-octane night also belonged to teenage Canadian sensation, Shawn Mendes, 18, who beat out his countryman Bieber to take the award for Best Male. He also won best Worldwide Act.

Mendes thanked everyone at the ceremony, and sent special wishes to her mum as it was her birthday.

American duo Twenty One Pilots also took two honours, with Best Live act and Best Alternative.

The fast-paced show, hosted by American singer-songwriter Bebe Rexha, wowed the audience packed into the Ahoy Centre in Rotterdam.

Bruno Mars and Kings of Leon were the headline performing sensations. Funk-pop singer Mars opened the show with an electric performance of his “24K Magic”.

And San Francisco punk rockers Green Day received a “Global Icon” award, raising cheers when they said it was “nice to be out of America just for a second” ahead of Tuesday’s elections, saying the US was about to have a “big heart attack”.

Green Day led a rebirth of punk rock in the early 1990s and the band last year was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in its first year of eligibility.

The home crowd also gave big cheers to Dutch DJ Martin Garrix who won the Best Electronics and the Best World Stage award.

The MTV Europe Music Awards, aired globally on television as well as over social media, aims to reach a more international audience than the network’s signature US-based Video Music Awards.

Football: Messi reaches 500-goal mark

0

Madrid – Lionel Messi, with his 500th Barcelona goal, and Luis Suarez saved the Spanish champions from a second defeat in six days as they came from behind to win 2-1 at Sevilla on Sunday.

Victory keeps Barca just two points adrift of Real Madrid, who were 3-0 victors over Leganes thanks to a double from Gareth Bale.

Madrid also announced that Cristiano Ronaldo will extend his contract with the European champions until 2021 on Monday.

Messi inspired a spirited Barca fightback fresh from a 3-1 defeat at Manchester City in the Champions League on Tuesday after a first-half dominated by Sevilla.

“There is no one like him and our objective as a team is to look for Leo as much as possible,” Barca boss Luis Enrique told Spanish TV station Movistar.

“The capacity Messi has to play in any position and interpret what is happening on the field is laudable.” With the cast of the Game of Thrones among those watching on in Seville, the game got off to a frantic start.

The hosts had two shots on goal inside 50 seconds, but from a Sevilla corner Barca broke forward at lightning speed and Suarez’s effort from Neymar’s layoff was brilliantly saved by Sergio Rico.

Sevilla remained on the front foot for most of the first-half and got their reward on 15 minutes when Pablo Sarabia’s pass bamboozled Sergi Roberto and Vitolo charged through to open the scoring.

Sarabia passed up a great chance to make it two when he took the bizarre decision to backheel the ball towards the edge of the area when he had just Marc-Andre ter Stegen to beat.

Barca made Sevilla pay with another brilliant counter-attack to level two minutes before half-time as this time Messi curled Neymar’s pass into the bottom corner.

The goal was Messi’s 500th for Barca including friendlies, but he should have had more after the break as only a brilliant block from Mariano and save from Rico prevented the Barca captain turning the game around.

Messi turned provider for the winner just after the hour mark as he teed up Suarez to drill the ball low past Rico.

Rico produced an incredible stop to prevent Suarez making it 3-1, but a huge error from Ter Stegen at the other end nearly cost Barca the win as he flapped at a corner and Steven N’Zonzi headed inches wide the goal gaping.

Earlier, Bale rounded off a fine week after signing one of the most lucrative deals in football history himself to keep him tied to Real until 2022.

The Welshman earned his bumper new wage as he struck twice in seven first-half minutes before Alvaro Morata added a third 14 minutes from time.

Bale outsprinted the Leganes defence as he latched onto Isco’s through ball and rounded Jon Ander Serantes before slotting home from a narrow angle.

His second was a scrappier finish as Bale pounced on a loose ball inside the area from Toni Kroos’s free-kick to bundle home from close range.

By contrast, Ronaldo endured another frustrating afternoon as he was kept scoreless for the fifth time in eight La Liga appearances this season and didn’t even manage a shot on target.

The Portuguese has now gone five games without scoring at the Bernabeu – his longest drought since joining Real seven years ago.

“There is nothing wrong, he is not worried,” said Real boss Zinedine Zidane about Ronaldo’s slump in form.

“He looks good, he is motivated, he likes to scores goals and even more so in this stadium, but he is calm.” Morata completed the scoring for Zidane’s men when he collected Kroos’s pass before firing home at the near post.

A fine day for Madrid was rounded off by the return of Luka Modric from injury and they even kept a first clean sheet in 11 matches to stretch their unbeaten run in all competitions to 28 games.

Villarreal moved up to third with a 2-0 win over Real Betis.

Meanwhile, Valencia’s struggles continued as a 2-1 defeat at Celta Vigo leaves them just a point above the relegation zone.

Celebs vs Trump

0

With the US presidential election around the corner, Hollywood celebrities are working hard to make their voices heard — and that includes having a field day with their anti-Donald Trump videos.

Here are three of our top picks…

SNL TAKES ON THE TRUMP TAPE

Alec Baldwin got rave reviews for his portrayal of Mr Trump on episodes of Saturday Night Live, and for good reason. Baldwin nailed his impression of Trump in the NBC sketch comedy show, which saw Kate McKinnon play Mrs Clinton.

In this episode, released a day after a 2005 recording of Mr Trump making lewd comments about women surfaced, Cecily Strongplays CNN anchor Brooke Baldwin, who questions Baldwin’s Trump.

As Mr Trump, Baldwin jokes that the damning conversation took place 11 years ago, “back when I was a young, childish 59-year-old man”.

While many Americans were amused, Mr Trump criticised Baldwin’s performance on Twitter, calling for an end to the show.

“Watched Saturday Night Live hit job on me. Time to retire the boring and unfunny show. Alec Baldwin portrayal stinks. Media rigging election!” he wrote.

IMPORTANT (SAVE THE DAY. VOTE)

The Avengers director Joss Whedon assembled a “tonne of famous people” for his public service announcement urging Americans to vote in the election.

Stars such as Robert Downey Jr, Mark Ruffalo, James Franco, Julianne Moore and Neil Patrick Harrislent their support to this tongue-in-cheek video.

Although Mr Trump is not named, actor Don Cheadledescribes him as a “racist abusive coward who could permanently damage the fabric of our society”.

The stars also joke about getting Ruffalo to do a nude scene in his next movie to encourage viewers to vote.

WILL.I.AM FEAT APL.DE.AP AND LIANE V – GRAB’M BY THE P****Y

Using Mr Trump’s infamous sexist line about women as the title for this parody song, The Black Eyed Peas member will.i.am dons a blond wig in the most unconvincing Trump impersonation ever.

Despite the lack of physical resemblance to Mr Trump, will.i.am roasts the Republican presidential candidate in this catchy tune.

“Got the KKK supporting me/ And the black community,” says will.i.am as Mr Trump.

He also mocks Mr Trump’s inability to answer questions about the Syrian crisis and war in Afghanistan.

The video concludes with will.i.am appearing as himself, asking viewers to vote for Mrs Clinton.

“Donald Trump does not look like the President of the United States of America, nor should he be,” he says.

“If this was a TV show, maybe I would watch it, it would be pretty funny… This is real life with real life problems.”

Michelin-starred ramen shop draws crowd

0

Foodies eager for a taste of the world’s only Michelin-starred ramen were up early to take a spot in the queue.

By the time the 18-seat Tsuta restaurant on the ground floor of Pacific Plaza opened at 11am yesterday, there were about 175 people waiting in line.

Singapore is Tsuta’s first overseas outlet.

The restaurant estimated waiting times to be one hour. It is set to serve 200 to 250 bowls of ramen a day in the first five days of operation, and will increase this number to 400 to 450 when full service commences on Nov 12.

Undergraduate Nigel Toh, 19, the first person in the queue at 8am, said he had heard so much about Tsuta in the news and decided to try it.

“I am keen to try their signature shoyu ramen since tonkotsu ramen is more commonly available in Singapore,” he added.

Prices start from $15 for a bowl of shoyu ramen and shio ramen.

IT consultant Kelvin Teh, 35, the second person in line, had watched a YouTube video on Tsuta six months ago but did not expect such a famous name to expand overseas – least of all in Singapore.

“I know if I come at 10am, trying the ramen will be a ‘gone case’ as the queue will be too long by then,” Mr Teh told The Straits Times.

Also in the queue was violinist and Tokyo native Yoko M., 34, who had heard about how diners would start lining up at 6am in Japan.

Indonesian Sugirato Alim, 35, arranged for a stopover in Singapore on his flight from Indonesia to Italy just to go to Tsuta.

“I thought I would take a risk and queue up for ramen during my nine-hour stopover in Singapore. I hope I do not miss my flight,” he said.

Tsuta’s Singapore outpost is a partnership with investment company Hersing Corporation, which also owns the local franchise of Michelin-starred Hong Kong dimsum chain Tim Ho Wan. – STI
