SINGAPORE – Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Sunday (Jan 22) night paid his respects at the wake of a 73-year-old woman who had been looking forward to taking pictures with him during his visit to Teck Ghee on Saturday (Jan 21), but died of a heart attack early that same day.
PM Lee had found out about Madam Sim Chiu Hong’s death from a Facebook comment her daughter Gena Tan left on one of his posts on Sunday night.
He had posted pictures of his visit to Teck Ghee market, as well as the estate’s annual Hongbao Presentation Ceremony.
In response, Ms Tan, a 43-year-old who works in the insurance industry, wrote that her mother, a stallholder at the market at Block 341, had died the morning of PM Lee’s visit.
Her mother, 73, had been “looking forward” to taking pictures with PM Lee, but she died after suffering a heart attack early in the morning, Ms Tan wrote.
PM Lee responded less than 10 minutes later: “I am very sorry to hear this. Please accept my deep condolences. Hope your family is alright. Let me know if you need any help!”
Later that night, he dropped by Madam Sim’s wake at Block 321, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1.
Madam Sim had been very excited to meet PM Lee and had prepared a set of clothes just to meet him, Shin Min Daily News said in a report on Monday (Jan 23).
However, she fainted suddenly at 5.20am on Saturday and died of a heart attack soon after, her daughter Ms Tan told Shin Min.
Madam Sim and her husband Mr Tan Choon Kooi, 75, had run a stall selling dried goods for about 30 years.
Ms Tan said her mother had been a big fan of PM Lee and would take pictures with him whenever he visited the market.
Ms Tan said she did not expect that PM Lee would pay his respects at her mother’s wake after reading her comment on his Facebook page.
She and her family were very touched and felt very honoured.
She said she “never thought that PM would drop by”, adding that it “made us feel very warm, he really cares about us”.
PM Lee spoke to Ms Tan’s family at the wake and stayed for about 20 minutes before leaving.
He spoke to Madam Sim’s husband and offered words of encouragement, Ms Tan said.
“PM said he had a deep impression of my parents’ stall and remembered that they have always worked hard at it. He even told my dad not to give up the business and said my dad is still young and should keep up an active lifestyle,” she said.

Bangladesh reported an outbreak of the highly contagious H5N1 bird flu virus at a poultry farm in Dhaka, the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) said on Monday (Jan 23), citing a report from the Bangladeshi agriculture ministry.
Of 3,000 Sonali type poultry at risk from the outbreak, 732 died from the virus and the rest were slaughtered, according to the report posted by the Paris-based OIE.
The farm was located in Dhamrai, a division of the capital city of Dhaka, the report said.
Different strains of bird flu have been spreading across Europe and Asia since late last year, leading to mass culling of poultry in certain countries and some human deaths in China.
This prompted the World Health Organisation to call on all countries on Monday (Jan 23) to monitor closely outbreaks of the deadly virus in birds and poultry and to report promptly any human cases that could signal the start of a flu pandemic.
A lion attacked and severely injured two handlers working for a Japanese company that provides animals for the entertainment industry, media reported on Monday.
The 10-year-old male was chained in a cage, being groomed for a scheduled shoot when the animal suddenly turned aggressive, according to police cited in the reports.
A 55-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man suffered bites to their heads and legs.
It was not clear what provoked the animal. The company did not immediately respond to telephone calls from Reuters to seek comment.
Police and health officials in Chiba prefecture, east of Tokyo, where the production company is located, were investigating the incident.
Japan could pass a one-off bill allowing its retirement-ready emperor to step down, a government panel said Monday, in what would be the first abdication in over two centuries.
The option was one of several presented by the group of experts charged with sorting out the thorny issue. They are expected to make a final recommendation in March.
Last summer, Emperor Akihito, 83, expressed a desire to abdicate after nearly three decades on the Chrysanthemum Throne, one of the world’s oldest monarchies, citing his advancing age and weakening health.
The news sent shockwaves across Japan and unleashed a flood of questions. Japan has had abdications in its long imperial history, but the last one was over 200 years ago and there is no mechanism for one under current laws.
On Monday, the six-member panel, which was tapped to find the best way forward, said other options include revising the law to allow future emperors to resign if they choose, reducing Akihito’s official duties, or letting him become a regent instead of abdicating.
“This is a very serious issue and we need to discuss it carefully,” said Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who attended the panel’s meeting.
Abdication is a sensitive issue in light of Japan’s modern history of war waged in the name of Akihito’s father Emperor Hirohito, who died in 1989.
Some scholars and politicians worry the issue could open a can of worms and risk Japan’s monarchs becoming subject to political manipulation. Under the constitution they play only a symbolic role.
The leading opposition Democratic Party opposes a one-off change, arguing this would not ensure stable future successions. It has advocated a revision to the permanent law that governs the imperial family.
Japanese media have previously reported that the government is planning for Akihito to retire and be replaced by his eldest son, Naruhito, on January 1, 2019.
The next eight weeks are likely to be painful for Hong Kong superstar Andy Lau, who suffered multiple pelvic fractures when he was thrown off a horse while filming in Thailand.
The 55-year-old is expected to spend the next eight weeks in hospital, and will need about six to nine months of rehabilitation.
The total estimated cost of his medical treatment? A whopping HK$3 million (S$549,000), including $165,000 in hospitalisation fees, Apple Daily reported.
Thankfully, the actor’s medical fees will likely be paid by insurers. The Hong Kong tabloid reported that at the time of the accident, he was insured for US$50 million (S$71 million).

He will most likely be compensated for the loss of income as well, Apple Daily said.
Meanwhile, Lau issued a statement on his official website, telling fans that he knew the pain they felt was no less than his own. He assured them that his condition was stable and ended his note with a promise to recover speedily.

“I hope this day will never end,” said President Rodrigo Duterte as he met with 84 Miss Universe candidates in Malacañang on Monday.
The President admitted that he never imagined that he would be “in a room full of beautiful women.” This as Miss Universe 2016 candidates paid a courtesy call on Duterte. Two candidates, Misses Findland and Switzerland, were not able to join the event because they were not feeling well.
“I’d like to make an admission that never in my life I have been with a room full of beautiful women,” he said, eliciting laughter from the crowd.
The President deviated from his usual impromptu speech as read a prepared speech.

“I usually do not read my speeches. I am not up to it really but this time because they told me that I must behave in my language, in the adjectives that I would be using to characterize or define your beauty, all of you,” he said.
Duterte said it was a “privilege and honour” for the Philippines to host the 65th edition of the pageant as he thanked the Miss Universe for giving the country the opportunity to host the pageant.
“It is an event which has undeniably brought enormous pride and joy for the countries of winning candidates. We all share of fame to our very own Ms. Gloria Diaz, Ms. Margarita Moran, and the reigning Ms. Pia Wurtzbach,” he said.
“I must say that God is really good. Aside from the worries of governance, with all the troubles in the world, when we look at you, we forget the universe, but only you,” he added.
He urged the candidates to use the pageant as an avenue to push for their own advocacies.
“More than presenting beauty and brains, the Miss Universe competition or any beauty contestant for that matter is an opportunity for you to represent your country, to promote your advocacies, and to advance women empowerment to a greater audience,” he said.
“More importantly, this is chance for you to make an impact, to inspire change, and even be the change that you wish to see in the world,” he added.
A photo opportunity with the President was held after his speech.
Earlier, the candidates visited the cities of Vigan, Baguio, Cebu and Davao.
“I hope that the contestants had a wonderful time visiting place such as Vigan, Cebu, Baguio, Batangas, and Davao. It is truly a great honour for us to be sharing with you our most beautiful destinations including the rich culture and history behind each of these gems,” he said.
The coronation of the Miss Universe will be on January 30 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
