HCM CITY – HCM City plans in June to launch the first river bus transport service connecting Bạch Đằng Wharf in District 1 with Thủ Đức District, and a second route in September from Bạch Đằng Wharf to District 8.
The aim is to ease traffic congestion on roads, city authorities have said.
The project, invested in by Thường Nhật Ltd Co, will be carried out on the Sài Gòn River, and at Thanh Đa, Bến Nghe and Tàu Hủ canals.
The first route will connect Bạch Đằng Wharf on the Sài Gòn River with Linh Đông ward in Thủ Đức District. Nearly 11 kilometres long, it runs along Sài Gòn River and Thanh Đa Canal with seven stops.
The second route will run from Bạch Đằng Wharf to the Lò Gốm area in District 8, along Sài Gòn River, Bến Nghe and Tàu Hủ canals. It is nearly 10.3 kilometres long and has seven stops.
The ticket is expected to cost VNĐ15,000 (S$0.90) per ride, according to the company.
Thường Nhật Ltd Co says in the first phase it will have a fleet of 10 boats that can carry 60 passengers each. Together, the two services can serve 5,000 passengers per day.
Earlier, the city’s Department of Transport submitted to the municipal People’s Committee a project to build two river bus routes under a BOO (Build-Own-Operate) model.
The investor will build all passenger stations along the route except for the Bạch Đằng Wharf, where the investor proposes using existing facilities.
The company had initially planned to put the service in operation in 2016, but had to delay the opening until this year.
Experts have said that it was time, after years of discussion, to make use of the network of waterways to reduce worsening traffic conditions.
The city, with a relatively dense network of waterways, sees water transport as an appealing alternative for both locals and tourists.
Last year, city officials said that a floating market, among other waterway tourism services, will function as a major attraction.
Bùi Xuân Cường, director of the Department of Transport, has stressed the need of developing waterway transport for both passengers and goods.
TAIPEI, Taiwan — An Indonesian woman working in Taiwan was recently deported to Jakarta after being nabbed for allegedly joining the Islamic State (IS), marking the first deportation case of its kind, the Central News Agency (CNA) said Friday.
Kaharudin Ali, director of the immigration bureau at Jakarta International Airport, told the CNA that his bureau picked up a female Indonesian citizen named Tri Astiningsih at the airport as she was sent back from Taiwan aboard flight CI761 on Feb. 22.
This was the first time Taiwan has deported a suspected Indonesian member of IS back to Jakarta, Ali said.
Ali said, Tri, aged 34, was arrested on Feb. 21 by the Taiwanese government in co-operation with the US Federal Bureau of Investigation as she was accused of joining the IS while working in Taiwan.
Under tight escort by Taiwanese police officers, Tri was sent back to Jakarta Airport, where Indonesia dispatched a special weapons and tactics (SWAT) team to pick her up. She was then handed over to Indonesia’s police headquarters in Depok for interrogation, according to Ali.
Ali also revealed that there were some Indonesian workers in Taiwan suspected of joining the IS, but said that all were under tight surveillance by Taiwanese police.
Airfreight service provider PT Jasa Angkasa Semesta (JAS) said that it was handling 459 tonnes of cargo containing equipment carried by Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud during his visit to Indonesia March 1 to 9.

JAS president director Adji Gunawan said of the cargo, 63 tons would be unloaded at the Halim Perdanakusuma airport in East Jakarta, while the remaining 396 tons would be brought to the Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar, Bali.
“We have been officially appointed to handle all [cargo] belonging to the king’s entourage aircraft,” Adji was quoted by Antara.
Among the special cargo were two units of Mercedes-Benz S600, which arrived in Denpasar on Feb. 18, one electric lift that arrived in Halim on Feb. 21, another electric lift that arrived in Denpasar on Feb. 22 along with other equipment.
King’s entourage of 620 people would be arriving in Indonesia from Feb. 15-28.
According to Adji, aside from his entourage, King Salman will bring along 800 delegates, including ministers, and 25 princes, who will be arriving from Feb. 15 to March 4 in 27 flights to Halim Perdanakusuma and nine flights to Ngurah Rai.
Adji said that his company would deploy 178 workers in Jakarta and 394 workers in Denpasar.

He is in jail and he is a fugitive — all at the same time.
Strange, right?
But the man we are talking about is no illusionist. He is Kamol Khan, a prisoner as per the Dhaka Central Jail records and a fugitive in case documents.
In a report that the jail authorities submitted to the Supreme Court Legal Aid Office (SCLAO) in December last year, Kamol’s name came up among 71 under-trial prisoners languishing in jails for 10 years and beyond.
And in response to a query made by this newspaper, the jail authorities confirmed that Kamol, arrested in 2004 in a double-murder case in Dhaka, is still in jail.
But the prosecution dealing with the case said he has been absconding for the last six years.
Case documents show Kamol got bail in 2011 but he did not appear before the court on two consecutive dates prompting it to cancel his bail and show him as a fugitive.
The Fourth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court in Dhaka has appointed a state defence counsel for Kamol and he has been facing trial in absentia. Its latest order on February 15 mentions him as a fugitive.
On Monday, Jailor of Dhaka Central Jail Mahbubul Islam told The Daily Star that Kamol was accused in five cases.
He got bail in three cases, including two for murder and another related to arms, but he is in jail in connection with the other two cases, including the one for a 2002 double murder.
Asked why he has been facing trial in absentia if he is in jail, Mahbubul Islam said, “From you, I came to know that he has been facing trial in absentia. But we have nothing to do here. The court and police can tell you about it.
WHO IS KAMOL?
Son of Ataur Rahman of Uttar Matbar Bari in Demra of Dhaka, Kamol, 31, is one of the 10 accused in a case filed over the killing of a lawyer and a filling station owner in Dhaka, according to case and jail documents.
Advocate Anwarul Islam and Sheikh Shahed Newaz Babla, owner of Karim and Sons Petrol Pump at Motijheel, were shot dead and two others suffered bullet injuries inside a private car in the capital’s Narinda on May 10, 2002.
Babla’s mother filed a case the same day with Sutrapur Police Station.
Police arrested Kamol two years later and through the court he was sent to jail on August 7, 2004. He along with another accused, Manik, gave confessional statements on August 23, 2004.
The case was transferred to Dhaka Sessions Judge’s Court on July 25, 2006 from Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court.
The Sessions Judge’s Court framed charges against 10 accused, including Kamol, on August 2, 2007.
But the trial could not begin until September 2013 mainly “due to the prosecution’s failure in producing witness”. The court recorded testimony of the first prosecution witness on September 29, 2013.
Following media reports that many have long been in jails without being convicted, SCLAO on November 16 last year sent letters to the authorities of all 68 jails across the country, seeking names and particulars of such prisoners.
According to the report submitted by the office of the inspector general of prisons on December 1 last year, there are 462 persons who have spent more than five years in jail with their cases still pending with different courts, Ripon Paul Sku, an official of SCLAO, told The Daily Star recently.
Of the 462 prisoners, 71 have spent more than 10 years in jail with their cases still awaiting disposal and Kamol is one of them, he said.
According to the report, Kamol is behind bars for the last 12 years and his prisoner number is 22,477/04. He was produced before court 92 times till the report submission.
Yet, case documents show that he has been absconding since 2011.
BUT WHY HE IS CALLED ‘FUGITIVE’?
Before the trial began, Kamol obtained bail on July 25, 2011. The court in its 64th order in the case granted him ad-interim bail observing that he has been in jail for around seven years and there was no possibility of completion of the case proceedings anytime soon.
On the next two dates for the proceeding — November 13, 2011 and May 23, 2012 — Kamol did not appear before the court, which led it to cancel his bail on May 23, 2012 saying “no step has been taken to uphold his bail”. The court later described him as a fugitive.
The court documents do not mention the reason behind his absence, but the jailer said, “We have produced him before the court whenever we were ordered.”
On April 6, 2016, lawyer Afjal Hossain Sardar of District Legal Aid Office in Dhaka sought bail for Kamol after he was asked by his office to provide the accused with legal assistance knowing his situation from jail authorities.
Afjal’s petition said his client has long been in jail and no specific charges were brought against his client.
The court that day did not allow his petition and ordered keeping it in record. Citing case documents, the court said Kamol was on the run and the defence counsel, Afjal, in the prayer even did not mention the date of arrest of the accused.
“As per the directives of the office, I had filed a bail petition for Kamol and as the court passed the order upon my petition, I came to know that Kamol is on the run,” the lawyer told these correspondents on February 13.
“After that, I did not appear before the court for Kamol as he was absconding.”
ABM Bashiruddin Miah, assistant public prosecutor (APP) dealing with the case, told this newspaper on February 15 that Kamol is a fugitive as per the case documents.
Advocate Mahfuzur Rahman Chowdhury has been appointed state defence counsel for Kamol and three other fugitives of the case and he cross-examined the prosecution witnesses on behalf of the four fugitives, said the APP.
February 15 was fixed for recording the testimony of the eighth prosecution witness, but the court had to adjourn the case proceedings until May 29 as the prosecution failed to produce the witness.
About the delay in the trial, the APP said the court on several occasions issued non-bailable warrant against the witnesses but they did not appear before it.

Anthony Bourdain has reached the point of popularity where people meddle with his personal life. I mean, it’s not just the food and his commentaries anymore. People like to know and dig deeper. Last year, when Anthony split up with his wife Ottavia after 10 years, people were affected. Especially to find out that the reason behind it was because they just made different choices in life-Ottavia her MMA career and Anthony with his life as a chef, TV show host, and an author.
This time around people are talking about the new woman in Anthony Bourdain’s life-Asia Argento-whom he met when he shot last season’s Parts Unknown. Asia toured Anthony on the outskirts of Rome where they visited her local grocery store and ate lots of pasta. And I guess in between takes, they fell in love.
It got us curious though, what is Anthony Bourdain’s type in women?
Italian is his thing
His ex-wife Ottavia lived in a small town in Lombardy, Italy while his new girl Asia was born in the city of Rome. Italian women are known to consume copious amounts of carbs and still look good (ha, I wish I lived their lives) and they are also known to be feisty and passionate.
He describes Asia as, “always honest, completely unsparing. If you ask Asia a question, you are going to get an answer-and she doesn’t care if it reflects badly on you-or on herself. She’s going to give it to you straight.”
They’re inked
After a few dates between Anthony and Ottavia, they already got matching knife tattoos and that was just the beginning. They got more tattoos together like their matching serpent tattoo back in 2011.
Asia, on the other hand, is rather extensively tattooed as well. She has an eye on her shoulder which she had done at 14, an angel on her abdomen, a very visible (and intricate) Victorian necklace on her chest, the name “Panos” on her wrist, and so much more.
They must love music(ians)
Just kidding with that description, but both seem to have a history with music. Asia was first married to an Italian rock and roll musician Marco Castoldi. She also delved into music by releasing her own album called Total Enthropy back in 2013.
If you’re curious as to how Ottavia made it to the US, she actually flew to New York to follow an Irish rock musician that she was infatuated with. After finding a job at a restaurant, he met Anthony through a common friend, and the rest was history. Wait, Anthony has background in music too, right?
Food and drink brings them together
Ottavia and Anthony’s dates were mostly in dive bars in the middle of the night where they just drink pints of beer and talk about work. They have so much in common since both worked in the restaurant business-they’re knowledgeable with food, service, and everything in between.
Asia was Anthony’s tour guide, as mentioned earlier, so they bonded over plates of pasta and conversed about so many things. He even said that the episode won’t be possible without her.
Actions stars
You might be looking at Asia thinking that you’ve seen her somewhere. Well, she’s been working on a lot of projects but one of the most memorable is her role as Yelena in xXx with Vin Diesel. Does that ring a bell?
Ottavia is an action star in her own right. When she was trying to get fit after she gave birth, she fell in love with jiu jitsu and started training seven days a week. She is also an MMA fighter. During interviews, Anthony would even say, “I married Sophia Loren. She turned into Jean-Claude Van Damme.”
Notice all the similarities? Bet you didn’t, but at least you know a little bit more about Anthony Bourdain and his taste in women.
AIS, the country’s largest mobile phone operator, may be paying the price for offering good customer service.
When a client complained about poor signal in the area near the besieged Dhammakaya Temple, the company apologised for the inconvenience and said that “the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission has asked AIS for co-operation to restrict mobile phone usage in areas under control [declared by Article 44] in Pathum Thani.
However, the signal block was meant to be part of a covert operation at the besieged temple.
“[Blocking the phone signal] is a secret operation. No one should leak, tell, or confirm the operation,” a source told The Nation.
“But the AIS reply to its client is confirmation and it is a real evidence,” he said.
The source said that officials ordered AIS to remove the message from Facebook to destroy the evidence.
A telecom industry source told The Nation that the company followed an order to designate the affected area a controlled area. So far, there has been no official explanation from NBTC about the order.
The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) and police have been searching the temple for fugitive abbot Phra Dhammachayo since February 16. The fugitive ex-abbot is wanted on money laundering charges.
The operation continued for seven days but officers failed to locate the monk.
The DSI then elevated its search by contacting the NBTC to have all phone operators – AIS, Dtac, TrueMove H, TOT – block mobile phone and Internet signals in and around the temple.
The measure was a bid to control the temple’s information dissemination, said DSI chief Pol Colonel Paisit Wongmuang on Friday afternoon.
In fact, the order to block the phone and internet signal has been in place since Wednesday but users were not aware until the AIS call centre confirmed the order.
At 12.10pm on Friday, a reply from the AIS Call Centre on Facebook to a user who complained about poor signal, said: “Hello….[the name was blacked out]. We apologise for the inconvenience. Since the NBTC has asked AIS for co-operation to restrict mobile phone usage in areas under control [declared by Article 44] you will not be able to use your mobile in the following affected areas:
– Wat Dhammakaya and surrounding areas of around 500 metres
– Tambon Klong Neung and Klong Song in Klong Luang district, Pathum Thani
– Area behind Talad Thai Market, Rangsit
The Facebook reply was then captured and circulated on social media, which was official confirmation of the order to cut mobile phone and internet usage in the area.
A NBTC source said the regulator was upset with the AIS call centre for confirming the blocking to the public.

SINGAPORE: The northern portion of Chestnut Nature Park was opened on Saturday (Feb 25) – marking the completion of Singapore’s largest nature park.
Together with the southern portion opened last year, the park now totals 81 hectares – nearly the size of the 82-ha Singapore Botanic Gardens.

Located near the Central Catchment Nature Reserve, the park is the first in Singapore to have separate hiking and mountain biking trails. With the opening of the northern portion, the park’s biking trail has been extended from 1.6km to 8.2km, while the hiking trail has been extended from 2.1km to 5.6km.
Hikers can trek directly from Chestnut Nature Park to Dairy Farm Nature Park, while mountain bikers have access to trails with different levels of difficulties, ranging from moderately difficult to extremely difficult. The park also has a pump track where cyclists can attempt stunts.

Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs and National Development Desmond Lee officiated the opening of the park’s northern portion on Saturday morning and accompanied about 200 residents and volunteers on the hiking trail.
Mr Lee also announced that another two parks will be opened over the next two years. Windsor Nature Park, located near Upper Thomson Road, will open later this year, while Thomson Nature Park will open by end of next year.
“Nature parks are special and they play a unique role in our ‘City in a Garden’,” said Mr Lee, adding that the parks provide opportunities for Singaporeans to experience biodiversity, and act as green buffers to protect the reserves from the impact of urbanisation.
