A table full of popular dishes from the Han and Manchu people of China was presented in Kunming, Southwest China’s Yunnan province.

The dishes, including Peking roast duck, braised fish and sliced boiled chicken, may seem appetizing, but they’re definitely not edible.

Carving master Zou Wantong spent a decade creating a feast of 50 Chinese dishes only out of emerald, estimated to cost up to one billion yuan (S$200 million).

Zou’s works are so lifelike that the colour and texture of the dishes are near replicas of their real counterparts on the dinner table.

The lawyer for actress Napapa “Patt” Tantrakul has asked for more time to submit financial documents to the Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB), its deputy chief Pol Maj-General Chatri Paisalsilpa said on Monday (March 27).

Investigators had previously set Tuesday as the deadline for handing in the documents, but Napapa requested a postponement until early April.

Chatri also revealed that investigators had issued a summons for an event organiser who reportedly hired Napapa for 1 million baht (S$41,000) to explain the employment contract.

Napapa had submitted the contract to the police when she went to testify along with her mother-in-law on March 17.

The 30-year-old actress was asked to explain the 10 million baht that was transferred to her accounts but she claimed that she had earned the money through her own work, Bangkok Post reported.

NSB investigators are checking the actress’s assets and various sources of income to check if they are linked to the alleged money-laundering activities of her husband, motorbike racing star Akarakit Worarojcharoendet, also known as Benz Racing.

Akarakit has been charged with conspiracy with commit money laundering and has been released on bail, on condition he does not leave the country without court permission.

He is accused of buying a Lamborghini sports car with drug money from a network led by alleged Laotian drug kingpin Xaysana Keopimpa.

Napapa married Akarakit last November and gave birth to a baby boy in February this year.

More than 50 giant clams and coral fish were seized from rogue fishermen in Krabi’s Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park.

Sarawut Thantien, chief of the national park, said park rangers spotted a suspicious speedboat on Sunday night and found six fishermen, mostly from Phuket, and meat shucked from the shells of more than 50 of the critically endangered Tridacna gigas packed in a black plastic bag.

The suspects confessed that they were catching these rare aquatic species to sell to a restaurant in Phuket serving Chinese tour groups.

They would earn up to Bt200,000 (S$8100) a catch.

All of them were cited for violating the National Park Act and handed over to Ko Phi Phi police for booking.

Three million funeral wood flowers will be given to public mourners before the late HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s royal cremation, according to Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) Governor Pol General Aswin Kwanmuang.

The artificial flowers will be made into 36 patterns – such as roses, orchids, water lilies, cape jasmines, daffodils, zinnias and champaks – from focal natural materials like dried banana leaves and trunks and dried water hyacinths, Aswin said on Monday.

They will be made and provided at 101 booths across Bangkok.

Flower makers will include people from BMA schools, vocational schools and companies.

Their models will also be given to those wishing to craft the flowers themselves.

According to Thai tradition, wood flowers are placed in front of a deceased person’s coffin or urn as a last tribute before cremation.

The BMA’s Social Development Department is receiving raw material donations for the flower-making process.

Songkran revellers will be disappointed if they expect a fun-filled water fight near Bangkok’s Khao San Road, a popular area with tourists and backpackers.

This year’s celebration will be different, as local authorities have urged business operators in the alley to refrain from entertainment activities and focus more on the cultural side of Songkran, which is celebrated from April 13 to 15.

Only traditional water sprinkling and merit-making as well as a Buddha image procession will be permitted, as the country is still in mourning following the death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej in October, Phra Nakhon district chief Supakrit Boonkhan said yesterday. The office has jurisdiction over Khao San Rd.

Supakrit said operators of entertainment venues in the area have been told of the policy.

Songkran revellers will not be allowed to use powder or water guns or dress scantily, the official added.

“This year’s Songkran will be on the conservative side, in line with the original tradition. We will not allow dancing, loud music playing or stage performance of any kind” in public places, the district chief said.

Piya Butjiramonaikul, head of the association of Khao San business operators, said yesterday the group has told tourists about the toned-down water festival this year.

He promised things would return to normal next year.

Prospective Songkran celebrants yesterday voiced disappointment at a lack of fun in Khao San, which is a popular place for the festival.

But they understood this was a time for national mourning.

University student Chalisa Limsakthaworn, 22, said she expected much fewer foreign tourists at Khao San – and less revenue for the businesses there – this year due to the policy.

She said that she herself would celebrate Songkran elsewhere in the city.

Relatives of 25-year-old female university graduate who is in a coma in a South Korean hospital after suffering a medical emergency, submitted a petition to Kalasin’s Dhamrongtham Centre on Monday, to get help to bring her back to Thailand for treatment.

Following the mysterious illness, Rapeeporn Nasaan, who recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, remains unconscious and in critical condition at a South Korean hospital.

Kalasin governor Natthaphat Suwanprateep has coordinated with the Foreign Affairs Ministry’s Consulate Department to provide initial aid, while locals in Kalasin were trying to raise funds to pay for her return trip.

Rapeeporn’s grandfather Thongon Nongsoda, who is former kamnan of Tambon Nong Waeng in Somdet district, led 10 other relatives to submit the petition and attached documents for deputy provincial governor Mongkol Odthon at the Kalasin Dhamrongntham Centre on Monday.

Thongon said they wanted the centre to contact authorities to help bring Rapeeporn back, as well as provide assistance money to cover her medical bills in South Korea, which were as high as Bt200,000 (S$8100) a day.

Mongkol said the province had initially contacted the South Korean Consulate in Thailand for help and was told that she remained in a critical condition and was placed under close surveillance. He said that anyone wishing to make a donation to help Rapeeporn could contact any Dhamrongtham Centre in their district.

As many as eight daily flights from Lombok International Airport in West Nusa Tenggara to Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali will not be in service on Tuesday in observance of Nyepi, or the Hindu Day of Silence, on the resort island.

Furthermore, the Lembar Port in West Lombok, which serves sea travel between Lombok and Bali, will close for 24 hours during the day.

“We halted the flights to Bali to respect the observance of Nyepi there,” Putri Muslimah, the spokesperson for PT Angkasa Pura I, the operator of Lombok International Airport, said in Mataram on Monday.

The affected flights are Garuda Indonesia flight number GA 7049, which normally departs at 6:15 a.m., local time, Wings Air IW 1857 (7:15 a.m.), IW 1853 (10:00 a.m.), IW 1851 (11:45 a.m.), GA 451 (1:05 p.m.), GA 437 (5:25 p.m.), IW 1963 (5:40 p.m.) and Lion Air JT 955 (6:15 p.m.)

All these flights will resume normal operations on Wednesday.

As many as 29 other flights connecting Lombok with other cities such as Jakarta, Surabaya, Yogyakarta, Surakarta, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore are not affected.

Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport will halt operations on Tuesday at 6 a.m. until 6 a.m. the following day.

At least 193 domestic flights and 131 international flights will be affected.
