Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy S8 is facing complaints from some customers who say that the display panels of their new phones have a reddish tint. The problem may be caused by the colour balance of organic light-emitting diode panels, according to industry watchers.

Some customers who preordered the Galaxy S8 wrote on online communities that their new phones have a reddish screen that did not improve even after correcting colour display settings.

One user said, “After I read articles that there are many reddish panels, I checked mine. I was also unlucky. Should I change it?”

Posting a photo of his new device, another asked, “Can you please check mine, whether this is too red or not?”

Samsung said, “It is not a quality problem and it can be adjusted with the phone itself. If the colour still appears to be reddish, customers can change it at the service centre.”

However, some users still claimed they were not able to adjust the colour because the display panel was already optimized.

“The reddish tint may be caused by a colour balance problem after Samsung used deep red AMOLED to strengthen the red,” said an industry watcher who declined to be identified.

Unlike LCD smartphone panels using three sub pixels — red, green, blue — the Galaxy S8’s OLED panel uses two sub pixels — red green and blue green. This may pose the risk of having a colour balance problem because there are two greens.

Therefore, Samsung developed deep red OLEDs to strengthen the red colour and the reddish tint might have resulted due to the new process.

Apart from the reddish tint issue, Samsung’s new Galaxy S8 is facing complaints from global consumers about the use of its Bixby button being limited only to the operation of the voice assistant Bixby.

Bixby had drawn attention as the button on the left side of the phone is said to be capable of being compatible with Google Assistant, a camera and other apps.

However, Samsung has reportedly prevented the Bixby button on its Galaxy S8 from being used to perform other functions. Some US tech media said Samsung wants to lock up Galaxy users within the Bixby system to gain an edge over Microsoft Cortana, Apple Siri and Google Assistant.

Amid growing complaints, Samsung’s Philip Berne said in a subsequent tweet, “I can’t say for sure why this behaviour changed, but I can say that we are not supporting remapping that button.”

Meanwhile, Samsung announced Tuesday that around 1 million units of the Galaxy S8 had been sold from April 7 to Monday.

SEOUL – North Korea used Chinese-made trucks to display missiles at a massive military parade last week, according to photographs released by state media, underlining the difficulty in enforcing UN sanctions against the isolated state.

At Saturday’s parade to mark the 105th birth anniversary of founder president Kim Il Sung, North Korea displayed six Pukkuksong submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBM) for the first time, towed behind trucks painted in North Korean navy camouflage.

In the photographs, the logo of Chinese firm Sinotruk can be seen on the vehicles.

Last year, Reuters reported that North Korea was using Sinotruk HOWO trucks to display a new mobile artillery system.

A Sinotruk sales official said on Tuesday he was not aware the company’s trucks had been used in this year’s parade.

“From my understanding, we haven’t had any business with the North Korean market since last year; North Korea has never been a major focus of ours,” said the official, who only gave his last name, Gu. “It may have been from before then and they refitted it themselves.”

Since 2006, it has been against United Nations sanctions to ship military hardware into North Korea but control of equipment and vehicles that have “dual-use” military and civilian applications has been far less stringent.

It is also much harder to track.

North Korean state media has in the past released images of Sinotruk chassis and cabins in propaganda related to construction or mining.

A UN report which noted the use of the trucks in the display of mobile artillery last year did not name Sinotruk, but said that the Chinese seller had included a “clear clause” in its deal with the North Korean buyer that the trucks were to be for civilian use only.

TIMBER TRUCKS

North Korea also appeared to reveal two new types of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) during Saturday’s parade. One was mounted on a large off-road truck which was identified in an earlier UN report as being of Chinese origin.

In a 2010 statement sent to China, North Korea’s forestry ministry said the trucks were bought to transport timber, according to the UN report.

The second of the two ICBMs was mounted on a North Korean-branded “Taekpaeksan” military truck which used tyres made by China-based Triangle Group, according to photos of the parade seen by Reuters.

Triangle Group, a major tyre manufacturer headquartered in Weihai, a port city in eastern Shandong province, said it was not aware its tyres had been used in the military parade. “It’s possible they were resold from somewhere else,” an official from Triangle’s export department said.

BANGKOK – An alleged Laos drug lord linked to some of Thailand’s rich and famous denied being a major player in the regional narcotics trade when he appeared in a Bangkok court Tuesday.

Xaysana Keopimpha, 42, was nabbed by Thai police on his way through Bangkok’s main airport in January, shining a rare spotlight on communist Laos’ shadowy role in the Southeast Asian pill trade.

Narcotics cops alleged he was an “international drug kingpin” and trumpeted his capture in a part of the world where major cartel figures are not big names in criminal folklore and are rarely caught.

The heavy-set Xaysana faces a string of charges including drug smuggling and possession – mainly of methamphetamine, which is known in Thai as “yaba” or crazy medicine for its effect on addicts.

“He denies all the charges,” said his lawyer Vorakon Phongtanakul, adding his client had also backtracked on a confession he allegedly signed in police custody.

“He didn’t understand Thai laws and officials told him he could change his plea at court,” Vorakon said.

Under Thai law the maximum penalty for drug smuggling is death though the country has not executed anyone for years.

Xaysana’s arrest drew widespread coverage in Thailand after police said a string of celebrities, including a famous soap opera star, and wealthy individuals were linked to his smuggling network.

Thai police have linked him to a massive seizure of 1.2 million methamphetamine pills made shortly before his arrest. Such pills are hugely popular across Southeast Asia.

The Golden Triangle, a region in the borderlands of Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and southern China, is the world’s second largest drug-producing region after Latin America.

Large amounts of opium and heroin and hundreds of millions of methamphetamine pills are churned out in remote jungle labs each year and smuggled through the Golden Triangle across Asia and beyond.

Porous borders and rampant corruption have allowed the lucrative drug trade to flourish.

Yet compared to Latin America, cartel leaders face little risk and garner none of the public notoriety.

Drug experts say Thai, Chinese, Myanmar and Malaysian police make frequent arrests and seizures but rarely catch any top figures, and there is little information on Xaysana’s seniority in the criminal chain.

Laos is seen as a particularly weak link in efforts to combat the trade.

Thai police say Xaysana flaunted his wealth, owning a string of luxury sports cars – some of which were seized by police – and travelling frequently to Bangkok where he held parties for members of the city’s so-called “hi-so” (high society) elite.

A photo of the suspected drug lord posing with relatives of a former Laos prime minister also raised eyebrows.

The ex-premier’s daughter-in-law later told Radio Free Asia the photo was taken “by accident” and Xaysana was only a casual acquaintance.
