Spend your NS50 vouchers at over 6,000 outlets

SINGAPORE — National servicemen have over 6,000 outlets to spend their S$100 NS50 recognition vouchers, the Defence Ministry (Mindef) announced on Thursday (May 18).

Besides the likes of supermarkets like Giant, and restaurants like Jack’s Place, Singapore Airlines and ezbuy are among the merchants who accept the vouchers. The list of merchants span the food and beverage, shopping and lifestyle, IT and telco, travel and leisure, as well as entertainment sectors.

The vouchers are part of a recognition package to mark 50 years of National Service (NS50).

Besides the vouchers, the package includes one year complimentary SAFRA or HomeTeamNS membership for full-time national servicemen (NSF) who are serving or have served operationally ready NS (NSmen), and a complimentary five-year PAssion Card membership. Registration for the PAssion Card has to be done separately.

The distribution to more than one million former and current national servicemen will be conducted in phases starting from mid-May, Mindef said.

All NSFs, and NSmen who are existing SAFRA or HomeTeamNS members, will receive their packages by mail.

Non-members will have to wait for their notification letters, which will be sent out from late July, before they can go online to register for their packages. They will have to register by June next year, and the vouchers are valid for use till Dec 31 next year.

Details of the participating merchants can be found at http://www.mindef.gov.sg/NS50/merchantlist.html, http://www.safra.sg/ns50faq and http://www.hometeamns.sg/aboutns50/#perks.

8,700 HDB flats on offer in May BTO, balance flat launch

SINGAPORE: A total of 8,748 new flats were launched on Thursday (May 18) under the May 2017 Build-to-Order (BTO) and Sale of Balance Flats exercise, the Housing and Development Board (HDB) said.

There will be six new BTO projects – two in Woodlands, one in Yishun, two in Bidadari and one in Geylang – with 4,802 flats. The flats are priced from S$73,000 for a two-room Flexi flat in Woodlands to S$622,000 for a 3Gen flat in Bidadari.

A total of 3,946 balance flats in 11 non-mature towns and 14 mature towns and estates are also on offer. These flats are priced from S$73,000 for a two-room Flexi unit to S$480,000 for an executive flat.

Starting from this sales exercise, HDB will implement the Deferred Downpayment Scheme, where elderly flat owners aged 55 years and above who “right size” to a two-room Flexi or three-room uncompleted flat may defer the downpayment on their new flat until they collect their keys.

The scheme will be extended automatically to eligible flat buyers and will help ease the cash flow for elderly flat owners whose funds are tied up in their existing home, HDB said.

Applications for new flats can be submitted online at HDB’s website from now until next Wednesday.

This is the second BTO launch this year, bringing the total number of BTO flats offered this year to 8,858 units. Together with the 3,946 balance flats offered in this exercise, HDB has launched a total of 12,804 flats for sale in the first half of this year.

Another 3,850 flats in Bukit Batok and Sengkang will be launched in August, HDB said.

Facial recognition analysis confirms identity of naked woman in sex chat with Indonesian Islamic leader

JAKARTA – The Indonesian National Police has said that a facial recognition analysis has confirmed that a naked woman who appeared in sex chats allegedly involving Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) leader Rizieq Shihab is female activist Firza Husein.

Hery Cahyono, a face recognition expert from the police’s Indonesia Automatic Fingerprints Identification System (Inafis) division, said the authorities used several methods, including biometrics, to check whether the woman who appeared in the sex chats was really Firza.

He said the police compared pictures of the female activist when she was arrested over an alleged plot against the government on Feb 4 with her suspected pictures in the WhatsApp conversation.

Hery said the team also used a bio-finder method, during which they checked Ms Firza’s naked pictures in the WhatsApp conversations and her pictures on her ID card and in the Home Ministry’s e-ID database.

“The automatic algorithm system shows that all those pictures match. The system would refuse to (report a match) if the pictures were from two different people,” Hery said as quoted by kompas.com on Tuesday.

Earlier this year, the police summoned Firza for questioning after screenshots of what appears to be steamy WhatsApp chats between Rizieq and Firza were uploaded to the Internet.

Firza, who was a coordinator of the Solidaritas Sahabat Cendana foundation, which is connected to the family of former president Soeharto, was reportedly having a relationship with the married man.

“This case is fabricated and libellous,” Firza’s lawyer Azis Yanuar said.

The Jakarta Police confirmed on Tuesday that Rizieq, who has ignored several police summons for questioning over the alleged pornographic text conversation, was in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Jakarta Police spokesman Senior Commander Argo Yuwono said the police had not decided whether they would send a team to Jeddah to bring Rizieq back to Indonesia.

“We are waiting for the investigators’ decision because his status is still as a witness,” Sr Cmdr Argo said. The police will coordinate with Interpol and the immigration office in handling the case, he added.

Separately, National Police spokesman Martinus Sitompul said Rizieq should respect the legal process and immediately come back to Indonesia because a warrant had been issued following his failure to show up for police questioning twice as a witness in the pornography case.

Rizieq’s lawyer, Kapitra Ampera, said Rizieq departed for Saudi Arabia on umrah (minor haj) with his family on April 27 and had not returned to Indonesia.

“We have communicated with his lawyer several times. We want him to fulfil his obligation as an Indonesian citizen and comply with the law,” Martinus said at the National Police headquarters on Tuesday.

This may be the craziest gift David Beckham ever gave his wife Victoria

What does a super wealthy husband buy his wife as a gift when that wife already has everything? The world’s rarest handbag, if you’re multimillionaire David Beckham.

As seen on CNBC’s “The Filthy Rich Guide,” Beckham, who is worth $350 million, once bought his clothing designer spouse, Victoria, an albino Nilo crocodile Himalayan Hermès Birkin bag that cost a reported £80,000 (or about $100,000).

The simplest of Birkin bags start at about $10,000 and are famous for their often months- or years-long waiting lists to purchase.

Mrs. Beckham reportedly has 100 of these regular five-figure handbags in a collection that’s estimated to be worth $2 million.

But the Himalayan version (so named because the colouring resembles the mountain range) that Beckham splurged on is no ordinary Birkin.

It’s “possibly the rarest and most desirable handbag in the world,” according to Hermès expert Jane Finds.

Such pale or albino crocodiles are hard to come by and the dying process for the bag is painstaking.

“Hermès only very rarely-and very thoughtfully-creates unique pieces of this calibre,” says Finds. Christie’s estimates only one or two of the bags are handmade per year.

The Himalayan bag also has 18-karat gold hardware that is encrusted with about 245 diamonds.

In 2016 a similar bag sold at auction for $300,000, which means Beckham got hers for a bargain. And luckily for the Beckhams, Birkins only appreciate in value with time.
