SINGAPORE: A pipe leak at the junction of Tanjong Katong Road and Boscombe Road on Thursday (Oct 5) forced one lane to be closed to traffic.

Singapore’s national water agency PUB said its sensors picked up a leak at 5.50pm, and its contractors are onsite attending to the problem. 

The right lane of Tanjong Katong Road towards Mountbatten Road has been closed to facilitate repairs, said PUB in a Facebook post, adding that traffic on the other lane remains passable.

“Motorists are advised to take precaution when driving at this location,” said PUB.

The leak comes days after two water pipes burst in separate incidents at Bukit Batok. Last Tuesday, a water pipe burst at Bukit Batok West, causing a three-storey-high geyser at a traffic junction. A few days later on Sunday, another pipe burst near Block 222 Bukit Batok East Avenue 3, sending water shooting up several metres high.

PUB said both incidents at Bukit Batok were caused by corrosion in the pipes, and that it would be conducting checks on all 100km of water pipes in Bukit Batok estate as a result of the leaks.

SINGAPORE: Mediacorp actresses Zoe Tay and Aileen Tan are considering “further recourse” over online articles falsely claiming that they were endorsing a skincare product, their managers said on Thursday (Oct 5). 

The product in question is called Auralei Anti-Aging Cream.

“As their managers, we wish to clarify that Zoe and Aileen do not endorse this product nor have they given interviews relating to this product,” said The Celebrity Agency in a statement.

One of the articles claimed Tay appeared on the Dr Oz show, hosted by American celebrity health expert Dr Mehmet Oz, and “went into detail” about the product and how it has “saved her career”.

“As I enter my 50s, I felt pressured to have cosmetic surgery done to maintain or improve my appearance … But I found something much better, something so easy and natural, I have to share it with everyone. Best of all, it only cost me S$5 to try!” Tay was quoted as saying in the bogus article which was written under the name of women’s magazine Cosmopolitan.

Channel NewsAsia understands that similar content claiming Tan endorsed the product appeared in sponsored posts on Facebook, and were flagged to her managers by fans.

SINGAPORE: A fire broke out in a housing board flat at Tampines Street 45 on Wednesday (Oct 4), forcing about 50 residents to evacuate.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the incident at Block 498J at 6.40pm. 

Thick smoke was billowing out of the windows of a third-floor unit, as seen in video footage sent by a Channel NewsAsia reader.

SCDF said it had to use a power saw to “force entry” into the unit, which was unoccupied at the time. It added that about 50 residents had self-evacuated before firefighters arrived at the scene.  

The fire involved the contents of a living room and was put out by SCDF using two water jets. No one was injured.

An eyewitness said his fifth-floor unit was covered in “thick black soot” after the fire.

Authorities said the cause of the fire is being investigated. 

LONDON: Singapore will play host to a new family soon, although they’re not average tourists. The Addams Family, and their strange and spooky relatives, will be bringing their brand of crazy to Mediacorp’s MES Theatre in mid-November.

The family has been seen on TV and in big-budget Hollywood films.

In the musical, the action starts when Wednesday Addams has grown into a young woman. She’s got a boyfriend from a normal family, which doesn’t go down well with the Addams clan.

The drama starts when boyfriend Lucas asks Wednesday to marry him. 

Musical actress Carrie Hope Fletcher has been playing Wednesday since the beginning of the UK tour. She said the audience will see Wednesday grapple with a new phase in her life. 

“She’s still the same kind of Wednesday that we’ve all grown to love over the years,” said Fletcher. “She’s still very straight-faced, deadpan and mad, but now that she’s older and she’s fallen in love, it’s kind of these conflicting feelings. And she sings this amazing song called Pulled, which is her big solo song where she sings she’s being ‘pulled in a new direction’.”

Actor Cameron Blakey is playing Gomez Addams and he said the show covers a number of musical styles. 

“Morticia is more, sort of old-school Broadway; Gomez has more sort of Latin-y, romantic songs; and Wednesday has the more upbeat, pop numbers, because she’s younger. So it’s all a mix of everything. It’s a beautiful score.”

As a touring company, production staff are used to packing up and quickly turning new venues into a new home. However, a move to Singapore is a bit more complicated. A new set is being built in the MES Theatre. The props, costumes and wigs used each night will also have to be air-freighted over in time for the show.    

Because the production is based on the original Addams Family cartoons, there will be slight differences from the TV series and the Hollywood films.

The musical will be on show in Singapore from Nov 15 to Dec 3. Tickets are on sale now through Sistic.
