Singapore economic rice and fruit sellers dish on 'chio bus' and inconsiderate aunties in Reddit AMAs

0

Reddit AMAs, or “Ask Me Anything”, are arguably one of the best parts of the Reddit experience.

Acting like an interview between the community and famous personalities (Barack Obama, Elon Musk, etc) or the regular Redditor with a not-so regular job, AMAs are often treasure chests full of interesting questions and even more interesting answers.

While /r/singapore has been relatively quiet on the AMA front, two threads that popped up recently have caught our attention. (There’s also another excellent one started by a chef in a Chinese restaurant).

Started by a cai png (economic rice) and fruits seller – both of whom are young and helping out in their family businesses, the threads helped to shed light on businesses that are, in spite of being extremely commonplace, are usually shrouded in mystery.

“I TELL THEM TO GTFO NICELY”

From questions we always wanted to know like “Do you scoop more (cai png dishes) for some customers?” and “Auntie got poke the fruits until you cannot sell or not”, the threads were chockfull of insights.

But apart from the ones covering various aspects of their daily operations, there were also some sobering questions about the competition these more traditional stores are facing from supermarkets and more ‘hip’ establishments.

To note, the cai png thread starter revealed that he’s just helping out his parents to run the business.

When asked if he would take over the business, he replied: “Nah, too much work. Cai Png is a life skill that you use when you’re out of options.”

THE NEW GENERATION OF HAWKERS AND SHOP OWNERS

Reminding me of the many ‘hawker-preneur’ stories that we’ve covered, I found it refreshing that the younger, tech-savvy generation is using social media and the internet to not just promote their own stores, but to also give a voice to their usually not-so glamourous and publicised trades.

While the more light-hearted questions induced some giggles, the parts (especially from the fruit seller thread) about them remaining competitive in an increasingly challenging landscape were rather poignant to read.

Personally, I’m a huge fan of these new generation hawkers and shop owners revamping more traditional businesses, and I do hope that with more attention and awareness via these channels, more Singaporeans would appreciate the hard work that these individuals are putting into these businesses.

Rose McGowan lashes out at Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos in Twitter tirade about Harvey Weinstein

0

Rose McGowan is going after Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos for allegedly ignoring her warnings about Harvey Weinstein.

In a series of tweets Thursday, McGowan attacked Bezos and his company for failing to hear her early claims about being “raped” by Weinstein and for “funding rapists, alleged pedos and sexual harassers.”

McGowan was one of the people named in the recent New York Times expose about Weinstein’s sexual harassment claims and is reported to have reached a settlement with the film producer.

Here are the actresses who’ve accused Harvey Weinstein of sexual harassment, abuse

It’s unclear what film script she is referring to or why she thinks Amazon won a “dirty Oscar.” But it’s clear her fight against Weinstein is about to get a lot nastier.

McGowan’s tweetstorm came moments after Twitter restored full service to her account.

It had previously limited her functionality for violating its rules, the company said, because she posted a private phone number.

Here’s McGowan’s full tweetstorm:

Singapore central bank keeps policy unchanged, says growth could slow in 2018

0

Singapore’s central bank kept its monetary policy unchanged on Friday, even as third-quarter economic growth exceeded market expectations, saying the economy could moderate next year as the global recovery enters a more mature phase.

The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) said it would maintain the rate of appreciation of the Singapore dollar’s policy band at zero per cent, adding that the width and the level at which it is centred will be unchanged.

The trade-reliant economy grew 6.3 per cent in the third quarter from the previous three months on an annualised basis, data from the Ministry of Trade and Industry showed, much faster than the median forecast in a Reuters survey of 3.2 per cent.

“MAS had indicated in the October 2016 (monetary policy statement) that the neutral policy stance would be appropriate for an extended period. Given the economic outlook at this stage and consistent with medium-term price stability, MAS will maintain the rate of appreciation of the (Singapore dollar nominal effective exchange rate) policy band at zero per cent,” the central bank said in its semiannual monetary policy statement.

The Singapore dollar slipped after the MAS policy decision, and was last down 0.1 per cent on the day at 1.3540 per US dollar.

“This is a bit akin to the European Central Bank where growth has picked up but inflation hasn’t picked up to the point where they need to pull the trigger on tightening policy. The other thing is the labour market still remains quite weak even though we have seen some improvement in the last few quarters,” said Michael Wan, an economist for Credit Suisse.

“They are giving themselves some space to tighten if needed as we move into 2018. There is no compelling reason to tighten.”

The MAS manages monetary policy through exchange rate settings, rather than interest rates, letting the Singapore dollar rise or fall against the currencies of its main trading partners within in an undisclosed policy band.

Although Singapore’s trade-reliant economy has gained this year from an improvement in global demand for electronics products and semiconductors, most economists had predicted the MAS would stand pat on Friday, given the lack of strong inflationary pressures.

Twenty-four of 25 analysts in a Reuters survey predicted the MAS would keep monetary policy unchanged this month, while one analyst expected a tightening.

Amazon Studios chief Roy Price suspended following harassment allegation

0

SAN FRANCISCO – Amazon Studio chief Roy Price was put on an immediate leave of absence Thursday, the company said, following allegations that he harassed a producer and ignored an actress’s claim of a sexual assault by producer Harvey Weinstein.

The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday reported an allegation by Isa Hackett, a producer on one of Amazon.com Inc’s shows, that Price had lewdly propositioned her in 2015.

Hackett did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Reuters could not independently confirm the allegation.

Price could not immediately be reached independently by Reuters and declined to comment to the Hollywood Reporter.

Also on Thursday, actress Rose McGowan said on Twitter that she had told Price that she had been assaulted by Weinstein, who was forced out of his company this week following reports in the New Yorker and the New York Times that he had harassed and assaulted numerous women over the years.

Amazon said in a statement: “Roy Price is on leave of absence effective immediately. We are reviewing our options for the projects we have with The Weinstein Co.”

A spokeswoman for Harvey Weinstein said: “Any allegations of non-consensual sex are unequivocally denied by Mr. Weinstein.”

Jackie Chan’s estranged daughter Etta Ng comes out as lesbian, 'awed' by support

0

Jackie Chan’s teenage daughter has come out as a lesbian on social media platform Instagram.

Etta Ng is the Hong Kong action star’s daughter with beauty queen Elaine Ng, and grew up with her mother only.

She made waves online when she and girlfriend, blogger Andi Autumn, opened up about their sexuality in Instagram posts.

On Oct. 6, Ng posted a photo of her silhouette against a rainbow background and captioned it with the hashtags “#lgbtqai #lgbt #lesbian #androgynous.”

Her girlfriend shared a photo of them and recounted their experience as same-sex partners in Hong Kong.

“We’ve encountered a lot of discrimination from family, friends, and the Hong Kong society,” said Andi.

“We are living in such an international city and yet so many people have their minds closed off,” she observed.

Despite being a leading world economy, Hong Kong does not fully recognise the rights of the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer) community. There is no anti-discrimination law on sexuality and same-sex unions are not legally recognised.

“Everything was against us. We’ve been pushed down again and again but it’s worth it knowing we will get through it together, side by side.

“But none of it matters when I know every morning your going to be next to me,” Andi concluded.

Netizens from around the world have flooded the posts with comments of support.

In a follow-up post, Andi wrote, “We appreciate everyone’s kind words and it’s honestly giving us more energy to fight for what’s right… Let’s make this world a peaceful and understanding one.”

Thank you to all of those who have shown love and support towards @stolenmilktea and I. We appreciate everyone’s kind words and it’s honestly giving us more energy to fight for what’s right. We will continue to share our journey and hope we can help others along the way. Let’s make this world a peaceful and understanding one. #pansexual #lgbtqai #loveislove #lovealwayswins #queer #loveyourself

Ng said in her own post, “I am in awe at the amount of support and love poured my way. I am speechless at how followers went to my Girlfriend @andiautumn and my account to show us both so much positivity.

I am in awe at the amount of support and love poured my way. I am speechless at how followers went to my Girlfriend @andiautumn and my account to show us both so much positivity. People all over the world have been rooting us on as Hong Kong media continues to mock. I’ve grown up in a world of negativity and close mindedness but I am at that point where I realise that I can use my experience to tell my truths and help others just like me. Thankfully I’ve grown since the days I was powerless and uncertain what the world has for me. Thank you for the enormous outpour of love and acceptance. 🌈❤️🙌🏻🦄 #lgbt #androgynous #lgbtqai #loveislove #lovewins #lovealwayswins #lesbian #love #support #🌈 #androgynous #queer #gay #gaygram #loveyourself #advocacy

‘HE IS NOT MY DAD’

Ng has had no contact with Chan, who has been married to Joan Lin. When news came out in 1999 that Chan’s affair with Ng resulted in a lovechild, the actor said in a press conference, “I have only committed a fault that every single man in the world commits.”

“He is not my dad. I have no feelings for him,” Ng told Express in 2015. “He is my biological father but he is not in my life.”

The 18-year-old has had a rocky relationship with her mother, who is said to have had an alcohol problem and has been jobless since 2015, according to Singaporean news outlet 8 Days. In March, the teen was suspected of attempting to commit suicide, reports the Shanghaiist.

Indian woman uses Facebook to annul her underage marriage

0

NEW DELHI – A young Indian woman has proved in court she was illegally married off as a minor after submitting evidence from her husband’s Facebook page, a child rights activist said on Thursday (Oct 12).

Sushila Bishnoi, 19, appealed to a court in Rajasthan state to dissolve her underage marriage, an illegal but rife tradition in many parts of rural India.

But her husband denied the couple were ever betrothed, threatening to scuttle her case.

The teenager, aided by an activist, trawled her husband’s Facebook accounts until they found the smoking gun that proved their marriage occurred when she was underage.

“Many of his friends had posted congratulatory messages on his Facebook page,” said Kriti Bharti, an activist whose Sarathi Trust charity has annulled many child marriages in Rajasthan.

“The court accepted the evidence and declared the marriage invalid,” she said of the ruling Monday.

The couple were married at a secret wedding ceremony in Barmer district in 2010 when both were just 12 years old.

Girls married off in Rajasthan often remain with their parents after the wedding ceremony until reaching 18 years of age, when they are sent to live their husbands.

Bishnoi said her parents were forcing her to move to her husband’s house and consummate the marriage.

“I wanted to study but my family and my in-laws wanted me to live with a drunkard,” Bishnoi told AFP.

“It was about life and death, and I chose to live.”

She ran away from home to a shelter where she met Bharti, who helped her begin legal proceedings to dissolve the union.

India’s highest court declared sex with a minor akin to rape even if the couple was married on Wednesday, a landmark ruling that closed a legal loophole around child marriage.

Nearly half of all girls in South Asia marry before 18 years of age, according to a UNICEF report released in 2014.

Infant, 3 residents injured in fire caused by e-bike battery

0

SINGAPORE — Four residents of a flat, including an infant, were injured during a fire caused by overnight charging of an electric bicycle on early Thursday (Oct 12) morning.

The fire broke out on the second floor of Blk 231 Bukit Batok East Ave 5.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that the four suffered “minor injuries” and were taken to the National University Hospital (NUH).

The SCDF said it was alerted to the incident at about 3:50am, and put out the fire with a water jet.

The SCDF warned users of personal mobility devices such as electric bicycles to take steps not to overcharge the vehicle’s battery and avoid charging them overnight.
It added that the batteries should not be placed near combustible materials while charging.

This is not the first fire that is related to overcharging of electric bicycles.
On July 8, a fire started in the living room where a man had charged his electrical bicycle battery for several hours. Investigations later traced the cause of the fire to the bicycle battery.

In their annual fire, ambulance and enforcement statistics report, the SCDF cautioned that rechargeable batteries that are left charging over long periods of time would result in overcharging, which can cause permanent battery damage to the battery and result in battery swelling.

The growing popularity of electrical bicycles, personal mobility devices (PMDs) has led to an increase in the number of e-scooter battery fires last year.
According to the statistics report in February, 17 fires were caused by electrical bicycles in 2016, up from 14 in 2015. As for PMDs, there were 14 fires in 2016 – a significant increase from just one case in 2015.
