Airport baggage handler, 27-year-old Abdullah Hayee Mayeh, was arrested with a bluetooth speaker on Thursday after his robbery was recorded on video.

CCTV cameras caught him trying to open the luggage of a passenger of Jetstar Airways flight on Tuesday at Bay 15 at Phuket International Airport while loading luggage onto the aircraft parked on the tarmac.

After the police showed the video to him, he confessed and returned the speaker to the public service department of the airport so it can return to its rightful owner.

Abdullah has been charged with robbery and taken to Saku Police Station for investigation.

A documentary that sheds light on the ardent defenders of impeached former President Park Geun-hye will hit theatres on Oct. 26 — the date of her military dictator father’s 1979 assassination.

The film’s title is “Mis-President.” When said out loud, the first syllable is intentionally meant to be mistaken for either “miss” or “myth,” director Kim Jae-hwan said a press statement issued Tuesday.

“I explained to a foreign correspondent friend that the generation that shares the ‘myth’ of Park Chung-hee and (then first lady) Yuk Young-soo is crumbling with the impeachment of Park Geun-hye, hence ‘mis-President.’ But they are still ‘missing’ Park Chung-hee and Yuk Young-soo.”

The film begins with the story of the elderly farmer Cho Yuk-hyoung, who religiously kowtows four times to a portrait of Park Chung-hee hung in his room every day. The general-turned-president’s past speeches are Cho’s prayer, and the theme song of the Saemaeul Movement, Park Chung-hee’s 1970 plan to modernize the rural South Korean economy, is his hymn.

Scenes of past news footage of Park Chung-hee’s 1963 inauguration and, later, the election of his daughter as president in 2013, are weaved together with the reminiscences and rallies of present-day supporters.

Their arguments, filled with nostalgia for the past, are consistent: How can you forget a leader who led a starving people into economic prosperity? The criticism that Park Chung-hee’s plans were carried out at a cost to democracy fails to sway the older generation, who say that basic survival took precedence.

But the film is neither an advocate of the Parks nor a biting satire of their supporters, director Kim explained. Its purpose was to give ear to the Park supporters’ seemingly radical advocacy of the former presidents and to seek a means of coexistence.

“I felt that there was a barrier between the candlelight generation and the Park Chung-hee generation,” Kim said, referring to the mass candlelight rallies that took place last year calling for Park Geun-hye’s impeachment.

“It is a huge barrier that deters us from understanding or conversing with each other. ‘Mis-President’ is an attempt to begin a conversation and listen to what the Park Chung-hee generation has to say.”

Kim said that the film is being lambasted by both liberals and the conservatives even before its release.

“One side says it’s a film made by a leftist director that’s meant to destroy conservatives. Others say the film takes too seriously the stories of a generation that should be disposed of.”

Distributed by Indieplug, the 85-minute film screened at the Jeonju International Film Festival in May.

HANOI – At least 54 people died and 39 went missing as destructive floods battered northern and central Vietnam this week, the disaster prevention agency said on Friday.

Vietnam is prone to destructive storms and flooding due to its long coastline. A typhoon wrecked havoc across central provinces just last month.

The floods that hit Vietnam this week starting on Monday are the worst in years, state-run Vietnam Television quoted agriculture minister Nguyen Xuan Cuong as saying.

Nineteen people from four neighbouring households in Hoa Binh were buried alive early on Thursday after a landslide struck around midnight on Wednesday, but only nine bodies have been found, the disaster agency said in a report.

Some 317 homes have collapsed in floods and landslides this week, while more than 34,000 other houses have been submerged or damaged.

More than 22,000 hectares (54,300 acres) of rice have also been damaged and around 180,000 animals killed or washed away.

Floods have also affected seven of 77 provinces in Thailand, Vietnam’s neighbour to the west, that country’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation said on Thursday.

More than 480,000 hectares (1.2 million acres) of agricultural land Thailand have been hit, the department said.

Taipei – A man who used a stolen samurai sword to attack a military police guard outside Taiwan’s presidential office in August has been charged with attempted murder, prosecutors said Friday.

Wielding the sword and carrying the national flag of China, Lu Chun-yi slashed the guard, who was trying to prevent him from entering the complex, in the neck, face, and hands, before being arrested.

The 51-year-old, who has been detained since the August 18 attack, has said he wanted to fly the Chinese flag in the presidential office, and was carrying hand-written notes threatening to “behead” President Tsai Ing-wen.

The notes, found in his backpack, also expressed his willingness to die as well as his hopes for China to unify Taiwan soon, according to prosecutors.

Taiwan is a self-ruling democracy, but Beijing still sees the island as part of its territory to be reunited even though the two sides split in 1949 after a civil war.

Relations with China have deteriorated since Tsai took power last year as she has refused to agree to Beijing’s stance that Taiwan is part of “one China”.

Prosecutors sought a seven-year jail term for Lu, saying that he has shown no remorse for his actions.

“(Lu) tried to portray himself as a martyr to justify or heroise his criminal behaviours,” the Taipei district prosecutors’ office said in a statement.

Lu was also charged with five lesser offences including theft, as he stole the samurai sword from a military history museum by smashing a display case with a hammer.

The sword is carved with the phrase “Nanjing battle, (this sword) killed 107 people” and is believed to have been used by Japanese soldiers during the Nanjing massacre in 1937.

The presidential office complex and its surroundings in the centre of the capital have been the target of attacks before.

In 2014, a driver tried to smash his vehicle into the front door of the nearby presidential residence, several months after a man rammed a huge truck through a bullet-proof screen and into the main gate of the presidential office.

There were no injuries from either incident, apart from one of the drivers who was hurt.
