Swiss tourists suffer brutal attack near Taj Mahal in India

0

NEW DELHI – A Swiss tourist has been left with a fractured skull after he and his girlfriend were attacked near the Taj Mahal during a holiday in India, police and media reports said on Thursday (Oct 26).

A group of men approached the couple near a local railway station and demanded selfies with the woman before attacking them with stones on Sunday, the Times of India daily said.

It said the man suffered a fractured skull while his girlfriend, a 24-year-old Swiss national, had a broken arm and multiple bruises.

Bystanders took videos of the couple on their mobile phones as they lay on the ground after the attack, the paper reported.

Senior officer Amit Pathak told AFP by phone from Agra in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh that police had identified some of the attackers.

“Some of them could be minors, so we are investigating and if they are indeed minors they will be produced in juvenile court as per the law,” said Mr Pathak, senior police superintendent for Agra.

Police officer Pradeep Kumar later said one suspect had been taken in for questioning.

The motive for the attack was not clear, but levels of sexual violence are relatively high in India and many Western countries warn visitors of the risk of attacks.

The Swiss embassy website warns tourists of high levels of crime in India, particularly in popular tourists spots such as Agra, where the country’s most famous monument is located.

Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj said she had sought a report from the state government of Uttar Pradesh over the latest attack and would send representatives to visit the Swiss couple in hospital.

Some social media users criticised Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for failing to provide security to tourists.

“Such a shameful story on the breakdown of law & order in India’s largest state. Is @myogiadityanath listening?” tweeted Milind Deora, a leader of the opposition Congress party.

Others said the incident was a blow to India’s hopes of drawing more tourists to the country, which had just 8.8 million foreign visitors last year according to official data.

Prince exhibition opens in London with Paisley Park treasures

0

LONDON – An exhibition showcasing the life of pop legend Prince opens in London on Saturday, unveiling previously unseen treasures from his legendary Paisley Park studio complex.

My Name Is Prince will see hundreds of items go on display at The O2 entertainment complex, the first official retrospective since the US artist’s death aged 57 in April last year.

Memorabilia on display include a diamond-studded cane and a diamond vest, while the show also includes awards, instruments and handwritten song lyrics.

The exhibition features the guitar used in his 1980 US national television debut, and charts Prince’s rise to stardom with clothing worn on his Purple Rain and LoveSexy tours in the same decade.

“This is the first time we’ve taken any items out of Paisley Park,” said Tyka Nelson, Prince’s only surviving full sibling.

The 5,000 square metre Paisley Park complex was opened by Prince in 1987 in a suburb of his hometown Minneapolis and it was there that he died nearly three decades later.

With state-of-the-art recording studios and vaults full of unreleased music, Paisley Park has now been opened to fans who were rarely allowed inside during Prince’s lifetime.

Putting the exhibition together was a challenge, said Mitch Maguire, the tour operations manager at Paisley Park.

“It is a large task because seemingly one of the great things Prince did for us was keep everything,” he said.

Angie Marchese, the Paisley Park archives director, added: “There are so many things in the collection that only about two per cent of the collection is actually on display.” .

With an audio guide, visitors can wander through the instruments, costumes and artefacts from Prince’s lengthy career.

Right from his debut album For You, which came out in 1978 when he was 19, there was no hiding Prince’s musical talents: he played all 27 instruments heard on the record’s nine songs.

A large area is given over to the album Purple Rain, and the film of the same name, notably featuring the purple trench coat Prince wore throughout the movie.

“Together they really catapulted him into the realm of superstardom,” said Maguire, recalling the Oscar it won him for best original song score.

“He was such an innovator, and good at pushing the envelope, and setting the trend. I think he was a pioneer in the 1980s, and really set the course for the way music was going to go.

“No-one ever worked harder than Prince himself, so that’s largely what separated him from all of his colleagues.” There are screens showing concert footage, several notebooks and manuscripts containing themes of love and sexuality.

A large, circular room shows off Prince’s wardrobe, with stage costumes and accessories including sunglasses and make-up.

Nelson said London was one of her brother’s favourite destinations and holding the exhibition at the O2 Arena – where Prince performed 21 sell-out shows in 2007 – made it the “perfect place”.

“I’m so excited to be able to meet the fans and share their Prince stories and give them hugs, and have a cry with them if need be,” she said.

Fans flocked to Paisley Park in April for a celebration of Prince’s life, one year on from his death from an accidental overdose of painkillers.

Born Prince Rogers Nelson, the petite pop sensation has been credited with transforming the music landscape and challenging industry conventions, dazzling crowds with his mastery of the guitar.

My Name Is Prince runs until January 7, 2018. Tickets cost £25 (S$45).

Former child actor Corey Feldman vows to expose Hollywood paedophile ring

0

LOS ANGELES – Former child star Corey Feldman has announced he is planning to make a documentary to expose an alleged network of paedophiles working in Hollywood.

In a video posted to Twitter, the 46-year-old musician said he was raising US$10 million (S$13.7 million) to fund a film providing an “honest and true depiction of child abuse” in the industry.

“What I am proposing is a plan that I believe can literally change the entertainment system as we know it. And I believe that I can also bring down, potentially, a paedophile ring that I have been aware of since I was a child,” Feldman said.

“Right off the bat, I can name six names, one of them who is still very powerful today. And a story that links all the way up to a studio. It connects paedophilia to one of the major studios.”

Feldman, who appeared in cult 1980s movies such as Gremlins, The Goonies and The Lost Boys, has long claimed that his career was destroyed for campaigning against what he describes as a Hollywood paedophile ring that abused him as a child.

Feldman says he and fellow child star Corey Haim, who died of pneumonia in 2010, were abused by studio executives as they were making a name for themselves, including “some of the richest, most powerful people in this business.”

“Ever since I discussed the fact that I have this plan, my life has turned to utter chaos,” he explained in the seven-minute video.

“I’ve been silenced my whole life, but just over the past few days since I made that announcement, I’ve been arrested, I had a near-death experience last night where I felt like I was almost going to be killed. Two trucks came speeding at me at the same time on a crosswalk.”

The actor and fellow members of the band Corey Feldman and the Angels were fined by police in Louisiana last week after marijuana was found during a search of their tour bus.

Feldman’s Truth Campaign – which had received pledges for US$107,000 via the fundraising website Indiegogo by midday Thursday – will finance the production and distribution of the documentary.

Feldman is also seeking help to “buy the security and the legal team that I need to help my family until the project is released.”

A cascade of accounts by women of sexual abuse has flooded social media under the hashtag #MeToo since a scandal surrounding movie mogul Harvey Weinstein erupted this month.

It prompted new calls for justice from Feldman, who took to Twitter a week ago to share his own experience of abuse in a seven-message tirade.

Kim Jong-Nam trial sees airport video of male suspects

0

Shah Alam, Malaysia – The trial of two women accused of murdering the North Korean leader’s half-brother was Thursday shown CCTV footage of four men suspected of involvement in the assassination at the airport crime scene.

A police officer testified one of the men was believed to have been the “mastermind” in the killing of Kim Jong-Nam on February 13 at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, in a hit that stunned the world.

Indonesian Siti Aisyah and Vietnamese Doan Thi Huong are on trial accused of carrying out the assassination by rubbing the nerve agent VX on his face.

The pair, who were arrested a few days after the assassination and face death by hanging if convicted, have pleaded not guilty to murdering the estranged half-brother of Kim Jong-Un.

They say they were tricked into believing they were taking part in a prank for a reality TV show, and South Korea has accused the North of ordering the hit. Pyongyang denies the allegations.

The charge sheet says four other individuals still at large are suspected of murdering Kim along with the women, but does not identify them. Four North Koreans fled Malaysia on the day of the murder.

Wan Azirul Nizam Che Wan Aziz, the main police investigating officer, previously testified the four other suspects were men known to the women by pseudonyms – Mr Y, Mr Chang, Hanamori and James.

CCTV footage of the men at the airport around the time of the murder was shown in court Thursday.

“Hanamori played the role as the mastermind of this incident,” Wan Azirul told the Shah Alam High Court, outside Kuala Lumpur, The officer testified that the video showed Hanamori arriving at Kuala Lumpur International Airport’s budget terminal just after 7:30 am and sitting at a table with James.

The other two men are then seen taking it in turns to separately sit down and talk to Hanamori.

The officer said Hanamori, Mr Chang and Mr Y changed their clothes after the attack and then headed to the airport’s main terminal, where they were filmed together in the departure hall.

James was filmed heading to an airport hotel at the main terminal following the attack. He checked out and was later also seen in the terminal’s departure hall.

Wan Azirul previously told the court that two of the men, Mr Chang and Mr Y, met Aisyah, 25, and Huong, 29, and put liquid on their hands shortly before Kim was attacked at 9:00 am.

23 people killed, 43 injured in Indonesia fireworks factory fire: police

0

Jakarta – Nearly two dozen people have been killed and dozens injured in a blaze that tore through a fireworks factory outside the Indonesian capital, police said Thursday, triggering explosions and sending plumes of black smoke into the air.

The fire broke out at an industrial complex in Tangerang, a satellite city of Jakarta.

“There are 103 workers in total at this factory, 43 are injured and being treated in three hospitals, the remains of 23 victims have been found,” Nico Afinta from Jakarta police told Kompas TV.

A firefighter on the scene said the victims had been burned beyond recognition.

“Those who died are completely unrecognisable, totally burnt,” Oni Sahroni told Metro TV.

Parts of the building collapsed after being gutted by the blaze which scorched nearby cars. Witnesses reported hearing two major blasts erupt from the site.

The factory – part of a complex that borders a residential area – had only been operating for six weeks, district government official Toni Rustoni told Metro TV.

The blaze, which broke out in the morning, was brought under control by late afternoon and authorities were working to recover the victims’ bodies from the building.
