Punggol, Bukit Panjang likely to see parcel locker network next year

0

SINGAPORE: A parcel locker network will be tested out in Punggol and Bukit Panjang HDB estates in the second half of next year, the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) said on Wednesday (Nov 1).

This was announced as part of the Industry Digital Plan (IDP) for the logistics sector that is aimed at helping the industry digitalise and at pushing sector-wide innovations.

The IMDA said it will begin calling for proposals by the end of this year to deploy a parcel locker network in the Punggol and Bukit Panjang HDB estates, as well as in selected MRT stations.

It will also call for a tender to deploy an inter-operable platform to provide secured open access to the lockers in the network. This would mean that the system will be accessible to different merchants, logistics service providers and consumers.

The pilot is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2018, and will be on trial for six to 12 months.

“To help cope with the growth of e-commerce and improve consumer buying experiences, a self-collection infrastructure such as parcel locker stations will help logistics service providers and retailers significantly reduce highly inefficient door-to-door deliveries,” the IMDA said in a press release.

“Singaporeans can also benefit by using parcel lockers to collect purchases instead of being inconvenienced by staying at home to wait for deliveries to arrive,” it added.

Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam first revealed plans for a common locker system in residential areas in April last year, saying that he believes Singapore would be the first country to do this nationwide.

“It is impractical and costly if each company employs its own locker solution in each neighbourhood,” Mr Tharman said at an industry event. “There is hence a role for common parcel lockers in or near residential areas – involving standardisation (“federation”) and enabling aggregation, to lower costs.”

Fans, celebs mourn S Korean actor Kim Joo-hyuk after fatal car crash

0

SEOUL – Grieving South Korean film fans packed a Seoul hospital Wednesday to pay their respects after the death of an actor dubbed “Korea’s Hugh Grant”.

Kim Joo-Hyuk, 45, died Monday from head injuries after his Mercedes crashed into an apartment wall and flipped over. No other vehicles were involved, police said.

Kim, whose father was also a famous actor, made his debut in 1999 and quickly gained popularity for his roles in several romantic comedies, earning himself the nickname.

More recently he moved into grittier parts. He was named Best Supporting Actor at the Seoul Film Awards last week for his role in the movie “Confidential Assignment”, in which he played the leader of an organised crime gang from North Korea.

“It is my first time to win a movie award,” Kim said at the ceremony. “It is as if my parents, who are in heaven, are giving me this award.”

Several top celebrities went to pay their respects at a remembrance altar set up in the Seoul hospital where his body was taken.

Large arrangements of white flowers – the colour of mourning in Korea – lined the corridors, which were crowded with media and sobbing fans.

Kim’s death was one of the most searched words on South Korea’s Naver portal on Wednesday.

“He was one of those actors that made me smile. I still can’t believe it,” said one user.

“I thought he would become a veteran actor like his father, it’s very sad. May he rest in peace,” wrote another.

Kim was the 20th most searched terms on China’s Twitter-like Weibo, as overseas fans also grieved his passing.

“Kim Joo-Hyuk was one of the very few South Korean actors I liked, my god,” posted a Chinese commentator.

Selena Gomez shares painful journey of getting kidney transplant

0

Five years ago, Selena Gomez was diagnosed with the auto-immune disease lupus.

On NBC’s Today show, the “Bad Liar” singer detailed her painful journey, which included getting a kidney transplant.

“I didn’t realise how much it was affecting my body,” she shared. “I would get fevers, headaches. I would get fatigued. But I always just kept going.”

In 2014 and 2016, she had to cancel tours and check into rehab to deal with anxiety and depression. She also underwent chemotherapy for treatment.

However, the disease had affected her kidneys, and were it not for the transplant, she would have required dialyses.

She had her family tested and none of the members matched.

Roommate and actress Francia Raisa, who was in the dark on her friend’s situation, recounted that Gomez came home “emotional.” “She couldn’t open a water bottle one day. She chucked it and she started crying.”

Gomez said, “She (Raisa) lived with me in this interesting time where my kidneys were just done… The thought of asking somebody to do that was really difficult for me”

After finding out that lupus had caused Gomez to have arthritis, Raisa offered her own kidney without hesitation.

Raisa immediately set to taking the necessary psychological and physical tests in one day, when normally the process would take six months. She was a perfect match, which Gomez described as “unbelievable.”

During the day of the surgery, the singer-songwriter said she wanted them to feel “good,” and they had their hair done in braids and binged on food together.

Raisa said there was fear before the procedure, though she felt calm after. “I had to write a will which was scary because there’s no guarantee that you’ll wake up.”

She shared, “My mom didn’t wanna be there until I woke up. She loves Selena so she was torn.”

After the transplant, Selena had to get a second six-hour surgery when her body reacted negatively; her kidney was turning around in her body.

She recalled feeling pain where her new kidney was. “My teeth were grinding, I was freaking out.”

She has since been recovering and has felt her health restored. “My arthritis went away. My lupus, there’s about a three to five per cent chance it will ever come back. My blood pressure is better. My life, my energy is better.”

“I don’t think what we went through was easy. I don’t think it was fun,” said Gomez in tears. “I hope this inspires people to know that there are good people in the world.”

Late Thai King Bhumibol to be honoured with 'The Great' designation

0

The Thai government is in the process of honouring the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej with the prestigious designation of “The Great”.

“We have already started the process,” Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha said yesterday.

The government has been preparing to honour King Rama IX as “Somdet Phra Bhajdhara Maharaja”. The name can be interpreted as the “Glorious” or “Best King”. “The Great” is traditionally attached to the name of a king who was outstanding and had a major influence during his reign.

King Rama IX will be the seventh king with “The Great” designation once the process is complete.

In Thai history, other kings granted the designation included King Rama I, who founded the current Chakri Dynasty, King Rama V, who abolished slavery in Thailand and significantly modernised the country, and King Naresuan and King Taksin, each of whom restored Thailand’s independence at different periods.

King Rama IX was the longest-reigning Thai monarch to date. His reign lasted seven full decades from 1946 to 2016. During the period he was devoted to his people and worked tirelessly to improve their well-being, becoming known as the “Father of the Land”.

Over the seven decades, Thailand transformed from an underdeveloped nation to an upper-middle income country with significant developments on many fronts. As a result, King Rama IX won the near-universal love and respect from his people.

About 20 million people dressed entirely in black formed long lines at official venues across the country last Thursday to lay sandalwood flowers in homage to the late King.

Mourners queued for hours to pay tribute. Prayut said the attendance at the ritual to lay sandalwood flowers was the biggest showing in Thailand’s history for a royal ceremony. The five-day Royal Cremation Ceremony for the late King ran from October 25 to last Sunday.

Duterte: Female soldiers who fought in Marawi already on all-expense paid HK trip

0

The female soldiers who fought in the five-month Marawi siege were already on an all-expense paid trip to Hong Kong, President Rodrigo Duterte said Tuesday night.

“They are already there,” Duterte said when a reporter asked about his promised Hong Kong vacation to the female soldiers.

He said budget airline Cebu Pacific paid for their airfare while he took care of their allowances.

The President did not disclose the date the soldiers left for Hong Kong and how long they would stay there.

He had earlier promised a Hong Kong vacation for the female soldiers who fought for the liberation of Marawi when he visited the frontlines of the besieged city in September.

Song Hye-kyo's $12,200 wedding bouquet said to cost more than her ring

0

Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo tied the knot in a private ceremony on Oct 31, but that did not stop photos from leaking onto social media. Fans got more than a glimpse of what was happening at the wedding, almost in real time, under the hashtag #SongSongCouple.

The pair were decked out in fine French fashion for their big day, wearing matching creations from French fashion house Dior. The wedding, held at the luxury Shilla hotel in Seoul, was witnessed by close friends and family.

Hye-kyo wore a long-sleeved white Dior gown with a plunging neck detail, possibly a custom-made variation of a black version from the fashion house’s Fall 2017 couture collection, Apple Daily reported.

Joong-ki, on the other hand, donned a Dior Homme peak lapel tuxedo.

However, it was the bride’s floral bouquet that caught the media’s attention – for its estimated 70,000 HKD (S$12,200) price tag, speculated to cost more than her wedding ring, reported Apple Daily.

The petite bouquet, made of Lily of the Valley flowers, is said to bring luck in love and means ‘the return of happiness’ – pretty apt for the occasion.

However, as the flower is not native to South Korea, it costs at least 7,000 HKD (S$1,200) to import. But if the bouquet was prepared by the hotel, the price could skyrocket to 70,000 HKD (S$12,200), said Apple Daily.

As for Hye-kyo’s diamond-studded wedding band, said to cost 31,000 HKD (S$5,400), it is reportedly a Bee My Love collection design by French luxury jeweller Chaumet.

The couple have rejected sponsorships from companies so it’s likely that they paid for everything out of their own pocket, unlike other sponsored weddings we know.

The Descendants of the Sun stars will reportedly be jetting off to Europe for their honeymoon. Congratulations to the happy couple!

Shell’s new 10-hectare lubricants plant in Singapore to serve 40 countries

0

SINGAPORE: Shell on Wednesday (Nov 1) opened a 10-hectare integrated lubricants and grease production facility in Tuas that will help boost Singapore’s position as a production hub for the industry.

The facility, which is almost as large as 25 football pitches, is Shell’s second-largest lubricants plant in Asia-Pacific and the third-largest in the world.

The plant can produce up to 430 million litres of lubricants and grease every year – enough to change the engine oil of more than 12,000 cars, every hour, every day.

It will also be a production hub for products that will be shipped to more than 40 countries, mainly in the Asia-Pacific region, said Mr Lim Kok Kiang, assistant managing director of the Singapore Economic Development Board in a press release.

Minister for Trade and Industry (Industry) S Iswaran said at the opening ceremony that Shell’s investment is a clear demonstration of the company’s continued confidence in Singapore as a location for high value-added energy and chemicals manufacturing.

“It is also a recognition of the growth opportunities that can be seized from Singapore,” he said, adding that the country is well-positioned to benefit from strong demand growth for lubricants.

The global marine lubricants market is estimated to expand at an annual growth rate of 4.17 per cent and reach US$3.33 billion (S$4.5 billion) by 2024, Mr Iswaran said.

Asia Pacific accounted for more than 51 per cent of this market in 2015, and will likely drive future demand.

“As a leading container port, many ships calling at Singapore can be served by our energy and chemicals companies,” Mr Iswaran added.
