Actress Kristina Cohen accuses actor Ed Westwick of rape

0

LOS ANGELES – Police are investigating a rape allegation made against Gossip Girl actor Ed Westwick.

Los Angeles Police Department official Drake Madison said there was an “ongoing investigation” after actress Kristina Cohen, 27, accused Westwick of rape in a Facebook post.

Westwick, 30, responded by tweeting: “I do not know this woman. I have never forced myself in any manner, on any woman. I certainly have never committed rape.”

Cohen alleged that he raped her three years ago at his house, shortly after propositioning her and a producer she was dating.

“Ed insisted we stay for dinner. I said I was tired and wanted to leave, trying to get out of what was already an uncomfortable situation,” she wrote.

She added that she was persuaded to stay by the producer and went to rest in the guest room. “I eventually fell asleep, I was woken up abruptly by Ed on top of me. I told him to stop but he was strong,” she said.

“I was paralysed, terrified. I couldn’t speak, I could no longer move. He held me down and raped me.”

Mischievous young macaque passes out for 10 hours after stolen coffee binge

0

A long-tailed macaque passed out for 10 hours after drinking strong coffee from an unattended plastic bag hung from a tourist’s motorcycle in Bangkok’s Bang Khun Thien district on Sunday.

The “Khon Rak Ling Hua Jai Kraeng” Facebook community page reported the incident, in which the male six-month-old monkey fell sick after drinking the stolen coffee drink.

Alerted by a food vendor at the Khun Kala Floating Market that a juvenile monkey appeared sick, a Khon Rak Ling Hua Jai Kraeng team along with a veterinarian went to transport the animal for medical treatment at the nearby Doctor Raiwin Pet Hospital.

The little monkey, which passed out from a severe reaction to caffeine, was given a mixture of carbon and saline until 3am on Monday.

After its recovery, the group released the monkey in the vicinity of its troop, although they said they would monitor its health.

The group also advised members of the public who visited areas frequented by long-tailed macaques to give them only fruit and vegetables at designated areas, rather than throwing food on the road, which had led to many monkeys being killed in road collisions.

CMIO racial categorisation system still important in Singapore: CNA-IPS survey

More than 2,000 people, mostly Singaporeans and across ethnicities and ages, participated in the survey jointly conducted by Channel NewsAsia and the Institute of Policy Studies.

SINGAPORE: The CMIO (Chinese, Malay, Indian, Others) racial categorisation system that Singapore uses, as well as race-based policies, still have a place in Singapore, going by a survey on what defines ethnic identity here.

The CMIO framework seems to be important, said senior research fellow Mathew Mathews from the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) in response to questions from the media during a briefing on Wednesday (Nov 8) on the findings of the survey done jointly with Channel NewsAsia.

“The fact that even among our millennials, they care about some of the core markers of their identity … they still think it’s important. That tells us that ethnicity and how we identify ourselves as ethnic individuals continue to be important for many Singaporeans,” said Dr Mathews, who was the survey’s principal investigator.

He added that one of the benefits of the CMIO framework is it ensures that minorities will continue to be able to practise their culture in Singapore, and feel just as Singaporean as someone in the majority ethnicity.

According to the study’s findings, the current CMIO classification system, due to its use in public policy, may have resulted in Singaporeans’ perceptions of ethnic identity converging on certain key indicators such as language.

When asked about whether there is a need for race-based policies such as the Group Representation Constituency (GRC) and reserved presidential election, Dr Mathews said that Singapore needs policies to ensure that “every one of our races in Singapore will be able to feel that they do not have to give up their particular culture, their language, what they feel is valuable to them”.

The GRC system was put in place to ensure minority representation in Parliament, while a reserved presidential election is open only to candidates from a particular minority group to contest. The reserved election held in September this year caused unhappiness among a group of Singaporeans, who staged a so-called “silent protest” at Hong Lim Park.

More than 2,000 people, mostly Singaporeans, participated in the survey, which was conducted by questionnaires being given to them and collected later. The survey aimed to study what Singaporeans felt were core identity markers of the main ethnic groups in the country.

North Korea a 'cruel dictatorship' says Trump in Seoul

0

Seoul, South Korea – Donald Trump slammed North Korea’s “cruel dictatorship” and the severe political oppression inflicted on its people in a speech to Seoul’s parliament on Wednesday.

South Korean lawmakers applauded as the US president, whose tour of Asia has been dominated by fears over the nuclear-armed North, vowed not to be intimidated and warned Pyongyang that it should not test American resolve.

He called for global solidarity against the isolated nation, but he also offered leader Kim Jong-Un a possible “path towards a much better future”.

“Far from valuing its people as equal citizens, this cruel dictatorship measures them, scores them, and ranks them based on the most arbitrary indication of their allegiance to the state,” Trump said in the address.

The North, which this year carried out its sixth nuclear test, generating by far the largest yield to date, has also fired dozens of missiles in recent months. Two have overflown key US ally Japan, and the regime has claimed that it now has the technology to mount a nuclear warhead on a missile that can travel as far as the US mainland.

Trump, who previously vowed a North Korean Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) capability would “never happen”, again warned Pyongyang not to consider an attack.

We will not “allow American cities to be threatened with destruction,” he said in Seoul.

“America does not seek conflict or confrontation, but we will never run from it.

“We will not permit America or our allies to be blackmailed or attacked,” he added.

The mercurial US president, who earlier Wednesday aborted a visit to the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) that separates the two Koreas, heads later in the day to China, Pyongyang’s sole major diplomatic ally and protector.

Ahead of his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Trump said the world had to unite to counter the threat from North Korea.

“All responsible nations must join forces to isolate the brutal regime of North Korea,” he said. “You cannot support, you cannot supply, you cannot accept,” he said, singling out China and Russia.

A MUCH BETTER FUTURE’

While the speech was heavy on Trump’s usual anti-North Korean bombast, he also offered an olive branch, in what he said was a direct message to the country’s young leader.

“The weapons you are acquiring are not making you safer,” he said. “They are putting your regime in great danger.

“Yet despite every crime you have committed against god and man, we will offer a path towards a much better future.”

The US leader’s tone in Seoul, just an hour from the DMZ and a city whose 10 million inhabitants would find themselves on the frontline of any conflict, has been in marked contrast to his previous warnings of “fire and fury”.

“Ultimately, it will all work out,” he said on Tuesday. “It always works out. It has to work out.”

Even so the North’s Rodong Sinmun newspaper, the mouthpiece of the ruling Workers’ Party, condemned his visit Wednesday. In an article published before his parliamentary address, the paper called the trip “a deliberate scheme aimed at strengthening military threats against us and to light the fuse of nuclear war”.

“War maniac Trump is pushing tensions to the extreme by spewing threats of war against us,” it said in an editorial.

Gossip Girl actor Ed Westwick responds to rape allegations against him

0

The sexual assault claims against men in Hollywood continues as actress Kristina Cohen comes forward with her own traumatic experience. In a Facebook post, she recounts how Ed Westwick raped her three years ago.

At the time, she was dating a producer who was friends with Ed. One night the producer took her to Ed’s house where they met for the first time. Kristina writes, “I wanted to leave when Ed suggested ‘we should all f*ck.’

But the producer didn’t want to make Ed feel awkward by leaving.” Because Kristina felt uncomfortable, she said she was tired and wanted to leave but Ed proposed that she take a nap in the guest room.

She continues, “So I went and laid down in the guest room where I eventually fell asleep, I was woken up abruptly by Ed on top of me, his fingers entering my body. I told him to stop, but he was strong. I fought him off as hard as I could but he grabbed my face in his hands, shaking me, telling me he wanted to f*ck me. I was paralysed, terrified. I couldn’t speak, I could no longer move. He held me down and raped me.”

Here are the actresses who’ve accused Harvey Weinstein of sexual harassment, abuse

The reason she kept quiet after the incident was because the producer made her believe that coming forward would ruin her career and that she didn’t want to be ‘that girl.’ However, she said, “I now realise the ways in which these men in power prey on women, and how this tactic is used so frequently in our industry, and surely, in many others.”

After the Facebook post started circulating, Ed released a response on Twitter denying the allegations.

Kristina’s goal coming forward with her experience is to show the imbalance of power, “I hope that my stories and the stories of others help to reset and realign the toxic environments and power imbalances that have created these monsters.”
