Duterte says he once stabbed a person to death, threatens to slap UN rights rapporteur

0

DANANG – Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has said he stabbed a person to death as a teenager, in a defiant speech to promote his drug war ahead of a summit of world leaders in Manila.

Speaking to the local Filipino community in the Vietnamese city of Danang on Thursday (Nov 9), Duterte also threatened to slap a UN rights rapporteur if he met her, and used obscene language to hit back at critics of his deadly drugs crackdown.

“When I was a teenager, I would go in and out of jail. I’d have rumbles here, rumbles there,” said Duterte, who is in Danang for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit.

“At the age of 16, I already killed someone. A real person, a rumble, a stabbing. I was just 16 years old. It was just over a look. How much more now that I am president?”

Duterte won last year’s presidential elections after promising to eradicate illegal drugs with an unprecedented crackdown that would see up to 100,000 people killed.

Since he took office 16 months ago, police say they have killed 3,967 people in the crackdown. Another 2,290 people were murdered in drug-related crimes, while thousands of other deaths remain unsolved, according to government data.

Duterte, 72, remains popular with many Filipinos who believe he is making society safer. But critics at home and abroad warn that he is orchestrating a campaign of extrajudicial mass murder, carried out by corrupt police and hired vigilantes.

He at times denies inciting police or others to kill, but also consistently generates headlines for his abusive language and incendiary comments defending the drug war.

Duterte said last year he would be “happy to slaughter” three million drug addicts and branded then US president Barack Obama a “son of a w****” for criticising the drug war.

Duterte also said in December last year that he had personally shot dead criminal suspects when he was mayor of southern Davao city to set an example for the police. His then spokesman later sought to clarify the remarks, saying those killings were during a “legitimate police action”.

Killer, or killer jokes Esquire magazine quoted Duterte as saying in an interview before he became president that he “maybe” stabbed someone to death when he was 17 years old, in what may be a reference to the incident described in Danang

. In an election campaign rally Duterte also said he was expelled from college for shooting a fellow student who was insulting him. The victim reportedly lived.

Duterte’s aides have repeatedly told journalists not to believe everything the president says, cautioning that he often jokes or indulges in “hyperbole”.

His new spokesman, Harry Roque, indicated that may be the case with his stabbing-to-death claim.

“I think it was in jest. The Pres uses colourful language when w Pinoys (Filipinos) overseas,” Roque said in a text message.

In Danang, Duterte also targeted the United Nations’ special rapporteur on extrajudicial killings, Agnes Callamard, who has been a frequent critic of the drug war.

“This rapporteur,” he said, after referring to Callamard by name. “I will slap her in front of you. Why? Because you are insulting me.”

Duterte’s latest comments come ahead of him hosting US President Donald Trump and other leaders for the Association of South-east Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit. Trump is due to fly into Manila from Vietnam along with many other leaders on Sunday evening, ahead of two days of talks.

Trump has praised Duterte’s handling of the drug war, telling the Philippine leader in a telephone call in April that he was doing a “great job”.

Human rights campaigners have said the summit will be a public relations coup for Duterte, with Trump and other leaders expected to ignore the drug war controversy.

“Duterte will enjoy the gift of tacit silence from East Asian leaders on his murderous drug war during the upcoming summit,” Human Rights Watch deputy Asia director Phelim Kine told AFP.

“The summit messaging will be of feel-good mutual economic win-wins that will ignore the fact that Duterte has inflected a campaign of mass extrajudicial killings.”

Blake Lively on when she knew Ryan Reynolds was the one and why he makes an amazing dad

0

When you first meet Blake Lively, what strikes you most about her, she’s nothing like the persona she created on the popular TV show Gossip Girl. In fact she’s funny, high spirited and dynamic, the perfect foil for her husband, actor Ryan Reynolds.

Although she was literally born into the profession – her father was an actor, her mother a talent agent – Lively was never part of the Beverly Hills crowd. “I was never around wealthy kids. My family is from Georgia. I was born and raised in Burbank, a relatively small town. I was the youngest of five kids,” Lively, 30, said.

“When I graduated high school, I didn’t have that elitist private school mentality – kids grow up so fast in New York or in Beverly Hills. A lot of times when their parents aren’t present, they’re being raised by nannies – they grow up too soon and they don’t really have a childhood. I had a normal childhood and I’m so thankful for that.”

Her big break was being cast as the imperious Serena van der Woodsen in Gossip Girl which showcased her beauty, poise, grace and sensitivity. Week after week, she seemed to glide on screen from one teenage trauma to another. Everybody wanted to be her or to fall in love with her. She didn’t hide the fact that she and her co-star Penn Badgley were a twosome. But after the series ended, so did the romance.

She moved on to feature films. But then it was her role in Green Lantern, where she met Ryan Reynolds, who had just split from Scarlett Johannsen, that changed her life. The two fell in love, they were married in 2012, and have two children to complete the happy union.

Her last two films were with Woody Allen and Oliver Stone and now she is starring in Marc Foster’s All I See Is You in which she plays a blind woman who regains her eyesight.

The film was shot in Bangkok. What was that experience like, and did you enjoy the food?

We shot most of it in Bangkok but also in Phuket and Barcelona. The food in Barcelona was especially good. But Thailand, I love Thai food. Although after a few months of curries, you hit your sweet max.

But what was really neat about Thailand is it’s a place where your senses are on eleven. Whether it’s a flower market that smells so beautifully or a city street that just doesn’t have the infrastructure to care for it. There is much poverty and sadness there. You can go from seeing some of the most beautiful visuals that you have ever seen to some of the most tragic. At the end of the day, you have to decompress.

When you first started out, were you warned about Hollywood’s power games?

I think that power games exist in every industry. It wasn’t really talked about much when I first started out, but it happens in every industry; whether you are working in a grocery store or starring in a movie, despicable behaviour happens.

And it’s something as a woman that you often take for granted. If it’s something very small, like cupping your butt or making some comment, I am not going to report that, because that is just the way it is. But as a mother of two daughters, I am happy now that there’s an awakening, an awareness, and people are finally speaking out.

You just turned 30. How did you spend the day?

Actually I was shooting A Simple Favor in Toronto, and my husband surprised me. He got off work that day and flew to Toronto to surprise me, so that was nice.

But it was pretty uneventful, I didn’t have time to celebrate. So, I will have to do that, blow it out at Disneyland like a real grown-up.

You’re so expressive with your hands yet you always play such disciplined characters. Do you have to repress those natural impulses?

I do. I am overly expressive in real life. I was silly enough to watch my first David Letterman appearance, and I was like, “Do I really talk like that?” That was so embarrassing. So I have to fight the urge to be myself on screen.

Are you a clothes person?

I love clothing. I love designing. I love interior designing, I love the mixing of colours and fabrics and textures. I love combining different pieces, mixing feminine with androgynous. I love when a woman is strong and empowered, and that’s why I love pant suits, men’s blazers. I love doing things in an unconventional way.

Who is your role model?

I’d have to say my mother. She is one of those incredible people, the fact that she’s accomplished as much as she has in her lifetime; it should have taken many more generations, many more peoples’ lives to get where she got, and amazingly she is the happiest, most optimistic person you’ll ever meet.

She’s taught me that with determination and perseverance, when people come together it’s amazing what we can accomplish. And at the same time, she’s never been afraid to take chances through good times or bad. She’s pretty amazing.

Do you spend a lot of time with your parents?

I’m really lucky to have a family who are truly my friends. I had 22 family members over for a three-day visit. And we were all sleeping on each other’s beds and couches, and I love that. I love the chaos and being with them.

What makes Ryan the one?

He’s my best friend. I just knew the first time I met him that we could be best friends for the rest of our lives, whether there was chemistry or not. I knew right away that we would be together forever, and that he would be mine. That was it.

How are you able to balance career with taking care of children, a husband, and a home?

We make it a point to never work at the same time. We started doing that, even before we had children, because in this industry, it’s especially hard to stay in line when one is working in one location and the other in another. So for us, it’s really important to be together.

Our kids come with us everywhere, even if it’s only for a day. They’re not in school yet, so we can get away with that but I don’t know what will happen when they go to school. Ask us then!

Why did you name your daughter James?

There’s a lot of pressure about naming your child. You don’t even know this person; yet you have to make that decision. I mean, imagine meeting a stranger and you have to name him, and then he has to live with that forever.

So, we waited a while. We were considering a few names. We loved the name James if it was a boy. It is a family name on both of our sides. But then I had a boy’s name growing up, and I really liked that, so James she is. And not Jamie.

You and Ryan seem to have an ideal marriage but we don’t see you two together. Why is that?

Because you guys aren’t in my house, thank God (laughs).

But whenever you attend premieres, you’re always alone?

That’s our job. It’s important to have separation between your job and your private world. You don’t ask people who work in an office why isn’t your husband with you at work, or why your wife isn’t there.

So, our personal life is our personal life, and our public life is our job. This is a storied profession and we take it seriously. It’s not a lifestyle, it’s a job, it’s our work. It’s our craft.

Who is the boss at home?

There is no boss. Whether it’s my husband, me, my daughters, my parents, whoever, when you have love and respect for each other, everybody has got a voice and everybody should be heard.

Has motherhood changed you?

I don’t know if it changed me, family was always my priority, and when you have your own, it’s just a much more heightened version of that.

And Ryan as a father?

He’s an amazing, amazing father. I am lucky because he is my best friend and that has continued through parenthood. I was lucky to get a good one.

Man who allegedly robbed 7-Eleven shop 'commits suicide'

0

BANGKOK: A Nakhon Ratchasima man who allegedly threatened staff at a 7-Eleven store in Bangkok’s Lak Si district with a rifle early Tuesday morning and made off with Bt1,000 (S$41) in cash was found to have committed suicide by hanging at a garage in Vibhavadi-Rangsit Soi 33 on Friday morning.

The body of Natthapong Sosut, 29, was found at 8am.

Police found a four-page suicide note addressed to his family and police.

The note said Natthapong was remorseful for what he had done and had decided to commit suicide because he didn’t want to be in prison for the crime, which could carry up to a 15 years’ jail term.

Police sent the man’s body for autopsy to determine the cause of death while forensic officers inspected the scene.

SINGAPORE: A man who sued his son’s school for holding the student’s confiscated phone for three months has dropped the case, the school confirmed on Friday (Nov 10).

Earlier this year, the parent sued the principal of Anglo-Chinese School (ACS) Barker Road, after his son’s iPhone 7 was confiscated back in March as punishment for using it during school hours.

The parent had also claimed the phone was his, and made a legal request for its return before the end of a stipulated three-month confiscation period. This was rejected by a judge who deemed the principal was rightly following school rules.

An ACS Barker Road spokesperson said the court has ordered the parent to pay costs to the school.

There has been no change to the school’s policy on the use of handphones, which requires students to keep their handphones in their lockers during school hours, the spokesperson added.

Philippines' Duterte offers to host 'world summit' on human rights

0

MANILA – Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who is facing international criticism for his bloody war on drugs, said his country was willing to host a “world summit” to tackle how nations can protect human rights.

The firebrand leader, who spoke in a news conference late on Thursday while in Vietnam for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting, said the summit should focus on human rights violations not just in the Philippines but globally.

Some western countries and human rights groups have strongly criticised Duterte’s anti-narcotics campaign that has killed more than 3,900 suspected drug users and peddlers, in what the police called self-defence after armed suspects resisted arrest.

Critics dispute that and say executions are taking place with zero accountability, allegations the police reject.

“Let’s have a summit of how we can protect human rights for all human race,” Duterte said shortly after meeting with the Filipino community in Vietnam, where he also renewed his attacks against United Nations human rights expert Agnes Callamard.

“What makes the death of people in the Philippines more important than the rest of the children in the world that were massacred and killed,” he asked.

He said all victims of human rights violations are welcome to attend the summit and air their grievances.

Duterte reiterated his threat to slap Callamard if she investigates him for the rising death toll in his war on drugs and would ask her why she has made no comments on the victims of bombings and violence in the Middle East.

“What have you been doing all the time? Why are you so fascinated with drugs?” Duterte said.

Duterte also threatened to ban two American lawmakers from coming to Manila after they criticised US President Donald Trump for inviting him to visit the United States.

“If you do not like me, I do not like you. We’re even,” he said without naming the lawmakers.

Democratic Rep. James McGovern and Republican Rep. Randy Hultgren had called on Trump to highlight the human rights situation in the Philippines in his upcoming visit to Manila.

“I will tell them, you are too presumptuous. What made you think that I am even planning or thinking about visiting your country?”

Philippine cops in hot water for wolf-whistling at a woman

0

The Quezon City police has identified the two policemen who were accused of wolf-whistling at a woman along Katipunan Avenue, Radyo Inquirer 990 AM reported on Thursday.

Quezon City Police District (QCPD) head Chief Supt. Guillermo Eleazar said PO2 Rick Lopez Taguilan and PO1 Domingo Nagales Cena will be charged with administrative cases, as well as their superior SPO1 Ariel Camiling. They were also relieved from their posts.

According to the report, the victim, under the alias “Zandy,” identified Taguilan and Cena as the policemen who wolf whistled at her as they passed by on board an official patrol vehicle.

The QCPD also obtained closed-circuit television (CCTV) footages from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) that showed the patrol car reportedly boarding Taguilan and Cena.

Eleazar said the policemen were on board a QCPD mobile unit No. 235 from Project 4 police station (PS-8) on the night the incident happened last Nov. 2.

Taguilan and Cena will face administrative charges for conduct unbecoming an officer while Camiling will be slapped with a complaint for dishonesty for covering up for the two.

The victim said she was walking along a poorly-lit area on Katipunan Avenue when the police mobile car passed by and slowed down as they were alongside the girl.

The policemen reportedly rolled down the window and whistled at her.

Quezon City is the only city that has a law penalizing catcalling. It imposes a fine ranging from P1,000 (S$26.50) to P5,000 and jail term of up to one month for acts considered as sexual harassment of women in public spaces.
