‘Gunmen’ storm Clarke Quay club in anti-terror exercise

0

SINGAPORE: Clarke Quay was the site of a simulated terror attack on Friday (Nov 10), with nearly 140 people taking part in the exercise.

The exercise – jointly organised by the police and the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) – involved three armed men who carried out a gun attack at a club in the Clarke Quay area, and a knife attack against persons in the vicinity.

“The attacks resulted in a large number of casualties,” the police and MOM said in a joint statement.

The exercise was initiated to test the emergency responses of the police, businesses and their staff in dealing with a terror attack similar to the recent London Borough Market attack, the statement said.

About 70 representatives and staff from businesses located around Clarke Quay participated in the exercise.

MOM has been working with CapitaLand Mall Asia, which manages the Clarke Quay area, to build up businesses’ resilience against terrorism under the SGSecure at Workplaces Programme.

This included encouraging their employees to download the SGSecure app, training them on emergency evacuation routes and the registering of SGSecure Representatives with MOM.

BizSAFE training sessions were also conducted to help businesses improve their workplace’s safety, health and security capabilities.

The statement said more than half of the tenants in Clarke Quay have now embarked on the bizSAFE programme.

Clarke Quay houses about 70 F&B and lifestyle establishments that employ more than 1,500 people.

It attracts about a million visitors every month.

To better support building owners, the  police are also rolling out two new advisories on Contingency Planning and Building Security.

These advisories build on the SGSecure Guide for Workplaces and provide further guidance on how building owners can safeguard their premises and deal with an attack.

Companies can find out more about SGSecure through www.sgsecure.sg and www.mom.gov.sg/sgsecure.

Retailers in Singapore hope for booming business from Singles’ Day sale

0

SINGAPORE: Despite it being a Saturday, Ms Sharon Wong will be heading back to work on Nov 11.

Together with her employees, the founder of Motherswork will be keenly monitoring orders coming through from China given that her firm is participating in the Singles’ Day sale for the first time.

The homegrown firm specialising in products for mothers and babies will be retailing on Alibaba’s Tmall – an e-marketplace for international brands, unlike Taobao which operates as a consumer-to-consumer e-commerce platform.

“It might be a crazy day but we are all excited because I think it will be something very different from what we get in Singapore,” Ms Wong told Channel NewsAsia. “You don’t exactly play with volume here.”

After all, the annual Singles’ Day sale on Nov 11 is China’s – and possibly the world’s – biggest online shopping day of the year.

Launched by Internet behemoth Alibaba eight years ago as a day for single people to splurge on themselves, the 24-hour event has morphed into a spending extravaganza over the years. In 2016, it raked in a record US$17.8 billion (S$24.2 billion) in sales, eclipsing the combined online sales of US$12.8 billion from equivalent events in the United States, such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

In the lead-up to the Singles’ Day sale, Motherswork has received pre-orders for about 130 strollers and 160 milk bottles. Ms Wong expects thousands of its products to be sold on Saturday and its page on Tmall to see a minimum of 100,000 visits – throwing up an opportunity for it to expand its customer base in one of the world’s biggest consumer market.

Baby bottle manufacturer Hegen, which is also a first-time participant in the Singles’ Day sale, began ramping up stock shipments and inventories at its warehouse in He Fei four months ago.

“Our local partners have been telling us that sales on that day may exceed sales for the entire year,” said founder and managing director Yvon Bock, who expects Singles’ Day to lift the brand’s total sales in 2017 to half a million bottles.

“They are all really excited cos if we do well, they will likely get a boost too.”

Also fuelling the brand’s ambitious sales target is the fact that Ms Bock, 38, will be featured in a 12-hour live programme on Alibaba’s e-commerce platforms. The programme called Feng Kuang Boss, which means “Crazy Boss” in mandarin, will see representatives from 40 international brands take part in a series of activities such as live question-and-answer (Q&A) sessions with online shoppers.

“It’s my first time participating in such an event so I don’t quite know what to expect,” Ms Bock said. “We’ve been told that the viewership can go up to 10 million people at any one time so I just hope that I live up to the expectations of being the only representative from Singapore.”

Over at Hi-Beau International, the retailer specialising in health supplements and cosmetics is hoping to see its sales on Tmall quadruple to 4 million renminbi (S$819,545) this year.

Its first experience of the Singles’ Day sale last year was “crazy”, according to managing director Mike Zhang, who added that the firm has improved its processes to cope with the deluge of upcoming orders.

“Last year, we shipped 100 per cent from Singapore and everything was crazy. Not just on the day itself, but for about a week as we did all the order processing and packing in our warehouse,” he said.

“But this year, we have shipped around two-thirds of our goods to warehouses in places like Hong Kong and Shenzhen. We are well-prepared and all ready.”

EYEING THE SINGAPORE MARKET

But these homegrown retailers are not only focused on the Chinese market.

Back home, Motherswork and Hi-Beau have joined e-commerce site Lazada’s month-long shopping festival – Online Revolution sale – which sees retailers offering markdowns as high as 90 per cent from Nov 11 to Dec 12.

According to Lazada Singapore’s CEO Alexis Lanternier, 5,000 local sellers are participating in the sale this year, twice more than last year, with many of them being traditional brick-and-mortar SMEs.

“Both these stores and brands are looking to digitise their business, to expand their online presence and reach out to more customers,” Mr Lanternier noted.

The Singles’ Day fever seems to have spilled offline as well.

Department store Metro, for one, will be having its first Singles’ Day sale on Saturday, offering buy one get one free deals and 20 per cent storewide discounts for certain card holders.

“With our revamped online store this year, we see it as appropriate to market Single’s Day, which is traditionally an online shopping event, to both our physical and online stores, creating the O2O (offline to online) experience for our customers,” marketing manager Peggy Tan said in an emailed reply.

“MORE SALES LIKE THESE WILL ONLY BE GOOD FOR SHOPPERS”

This growth in prominence and popularity of the Singles’ Day sale is noticed by long-time Taobao shopper Ms Florence Goh. The 29-year-old Singaporean began shopping on Taobao 11 years ago when she was a student with “limited pocket money”.

“Over the years, it seems be no longer just happening on Taobao. Especially this year, you can see it on other websites like Qoo10 and even physical shops. It has become quite a big shopping event.”

For Ms Goh, the allure about shopping on Alibaba’s e-commerce platforms, especially during Singles’ Day, is the opportunity to snag bargains for a wide variety of items ranging from fashion accessories to furniture and household items.

“Shopping on Taobao seems to have seeped into my everyday life because it’s so much cheaper. 80 to 90 per cent of the stuff at my new house, like handphone covers, cutleries, decorative plants to big furniture, are from Taobao.”

For instance, Ms Goh purchased two sets of sofa at S$300 during last year’s Singles’ Day sale, which she described as a “really good deal”. The only downside, she said, is potential delays in shipping.

Her sofas were only delivered in January – two months after she placed her order.

According to Alibaba, consumers from Singapore formed the seventh biggest group of overseas shoppers in 2015, coming behind bigger spenders from Russia, Hong Kong, United States, Taiwan and Spain.

Alibaba declined to reveal the updated ranking for 2016 but said that snacks and local specialties, electronic devices like mobile phone covers and chargers, as well as personal hygiene products such as sanitary pads and toilet paper were among the top three product categories that Singaporeans purchased during last year’s Singles’ Day sale.

But its not just Singles’  Day that shoppers are opening their wallets for; Black Friday and Cyber Monday are also scheduled to happen this month on Nov 24 and Nov 27, respectively.

According to a survey done by cashback start-up ShopBack, more than half of the 800 local consumers surveyed indicated that they spend more money online than in-store during the last quarter of the year.

Apart from the usual year-end festivals like Christmas and New Year, sales such as Singles’ Day, have also been fuelling year-end shopping spending by consumers. Respondents in Singapore chalked up a cumulative sum of S$313,710 over four sale festivals last year, namely Singles’ Day, Black Friday, Cyber Monday and 12.12.

Ms Violet Tham, 25, said she is taking a “look and see” attitude on Saturday given that she has been a “Black Friday fan” for the past few years.

“I prefer Western brands but this year, some of my favourite brands like MAC Cosmetics are having sales on Singles’ Day so I might just take a look,” she told Channel NewsAsia. “More sales like these will only be good for shoppers.”

Martin Nguyen Knocks Out Eduard Folayang, Makes History As Dual World Champion

0

In a shocking performance to become the first two-division world champion in ONE Championship history, Martin “The Situ-Asian” Nguyen of Sydney, Australia rocked the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines.

The reigning ONE Featherweight World Champion scored a shocking knockout victory over local favorite, and now former ONE Lightweight World Champion, Eduard “Landslide” Folayang.

Nguyen seized the opportunity of a lifetime against an opponent he considers a friend in Folayang, in front of a massive sold-out crowd on Friday, 10 November in the main event of ONE: LEGENDS OF THE WORLD.

After a tentative first round, which saw both competitors hesitant to put their combinations together, action heated up in the second frame with each man unloading their best offense.

Folayang, operating behind his vaunted Team Lakay wushu stance, showcased his patented spinning kicks and back fists. Nguyen, who was trying to time “Landslide” with his offense, kept largely out of range.

It was an even first round with neither martial artist pulling away on the cards. Folayang would be content with picking his shots from the outside, while Nguyen was intent on laying back and looking for the counter.

In the second round, however, it was a completely different story, as the activity picked up. After Nguyen missed with a wild left hook to start the round, Folayang answered back with a furious combination off the fence.

As the bout wore on, it became clear what Nguyen’s game plan was, and that was to time the Filipino with the counter overhand right – the same explosive punch that have felled so many of his opponents before.

Catching Folayang spinning from another wushu side kick, “The Situ-Asian” uncorked a monstrous overhand right that exploded on the Filipino’s jaw, turning the lights out on the Filipino warrior instantly.

Olivier Coste quickly called a halt to the contest at 2:20 minutes of round number two, with the winner by knockout being Martin Nguyen.

The victory marks Nguyen’s sixth straight victory overall. All six of the 28-year-old Vietnamese-Australian’s most recent victories have come by spectacular finish, with this latest win punctuating an incredible run.

Now the first two-division world champion in the company’s history, Nguyen (10-1) has the option to defend either his lightweight or featherweight titles, with loads of challengers lying in wait in both divisions.

Adriano Moraes Defeats Local Favorite Danny Kingad In Manila, Retains Flyweight World Title

0

The ONE Flyweight World Title was up for grabs at ONE: LEGENDS OF THE WORLD on Friday, 10 November, and Adriano Moraes proved to the world exactly why he is the reigning and defending titleholder.

The 29-year-old utilized his world-class Brazilian jiu-jitsu with precision, and was able to submit local hero Danny “The King” Kingad at the Mall Of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines, with just 15 seconds left in the first round.

Both the Brazilian and Filipino combatant were tentative and patient when the co-main event began, as neither of the highly-skilled athletes were willing to make a mistake.

With two minutes left in the first frame, Moraes took the bout to the ground and as Kingad looked for an escape, the American Top Team product stepped over and took the back of “The King.”

It did not take long for Moraes to sink his arm under the chin of Kingad and finish the palm-to-palm rear-naked choke.

Referee Yuji Shimada called a stop to the contest at the 4:45 mark of the very first round, declaring Moraes the winner.

This marks the first title defense for Moraes since recapturing the undisputed world title at ONE: KINGS AND CONQUERORS from then-undefeated titleholder Kairat “The Kazakh” Akhmetov in August. He elevates his professional record to 17-2, and waits to see who his next opponent is.

As for Kingad, he has never tasted defeat in his professional career, so this will just be a minor setback. He drops to 8-1, but under the tutelage of Team Lakay Mark Sangiao, the 22-year-old will undoubtedly improve his skills and come back stronger than ever.

Kevin Belingon Outworks Kevin Chung In Thrilling Three-Round War

0

Kevin “The Silencer” Belingon may have just earned himself another crack at ONE Bantamweight World Champion Bibiano “The Flash” Fernandes.

On Friday, 10 November, at ONE: LEGENDS OF THE WORLD, the Filipino contender defeated South Korean Kevin “Oldboy” Chung via unanimous decision in front of a capacity crowd at Manila’s Mall Of Asia Arena.

Chung’s strategy in the early going was to take the center of the cage, and force Belingon to strike moving backwards, all while opening up takedown opportunities in the process.

One errant strike to Chung’s groin led to an injury timeout, after which Belingon opted to prove that it does not matter whether he is going forward or backward when he unloads his explosive strikes.

The South Korean’s left arm kept sinking lower and lower trying to protect his increasingly-bruised body, and in desperation, he tried for a takedown and missed. Belingon let loose, and jumped on top with multiple right hands.

“Oldboy” attempted to push him off with his legs, but Belingon simply dived over the top for another huge right, followed by knees to the body and more punches to the head. “The Silencer” then stood up and punished the legs with kicks, before referee Yuji Shimada stood Chung up with 50 seconds left. He fared no better in the final minute.

The second round was measurably better for Chung, even though he was punished in any stand-up exchange that took place by the powerful legs and hands of Belingon.

Halfway through the stanza, Chung turned the corner. “Oldboy” got the Filipino to the canvas and took side control, but his mistake was looking for a transition to full mount, which allowed Belingon to explode back to his feet with 30 seconds left.

Getting Belingon to the ground visibly increased Chung’s confidence entering the third and final frame. While the Team Lakay product kept threatening with strikes, the South Korean shot for a takedown and got into side control.

Once again, the transitions on the ground backfired, as an attempt to secure an armbar gave Belingon enough space to get back to his feet, causing the home crowd to erupt in loud chants for the local favorite.

Chung would shoot again for a takedown, but it was stuffed and he flopped onto his back. With over 70 seconds left, Belingon took the bait. Unafraid of being submitted, he methodically attacked “Oldboy” and stood over his prone foe as the final bell rang. The judges would render a unanimous decision for “The Silencer.”

Now on a four-bout win streak, Belingon improves his professional record to 17-5 and inches closer to a world title shot. Chung, meanwhile, experiences the first loss of his career and dips to 5-1.

Alex Silva Makes Short Work Of Hayato Suzuki With Stunning Submission

0

The ONE Championship strawweight division has a new contender for the world title.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu World Champion Alex “Little Rock” Silva showcased his elite grappling skills, as he ended the long undefeated record of Hayato Suzuki at ONE: LEGENDS OF THE WORLD in Manila, Philippines, on 10 November.

Suzuki entered the bout undefeated in 19 career contests, and with a reputation as a dangerous submission artist.

However, it took Silva just 82 seconds to snap that unbeaten streak, as he turned the tables on the Japanese star in dramatic fashion with a stunning submission victory at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Suzuki pushed the pace from the opening bell and scored an early takedown, driving Silva to the mat up against the cage fence.

The Japanese martial artist quickly moved to half-guard and looked to work a position from which to move towards his go-to submission move, the rear-naked choke.

Silva, who trains and coaches in Singapore’s renowned Evolve MMA gym, had Suzuki’s game well scouted. In the blink of an eye, he hit the switch on the Japanese athlete, locked up a tight armbar in the transition, and forced Suzuki to tap out almost instantly.

The victory pushes Silva’s record to 6-1. It is his sixth submission win, puts him on a five-bout win streak, and propels him straight into the title conversation as a bonafide contender for the ONE Strawweight World Championship, which is currently held by Yoshitaka “Nobita” Naito.

Before the bout, Silva said that his goal was “to be the number one martial artist in my division in the world.”

After a performance of that quality, few would deny the 35-year-old Brazilian a shot at the belt in 2018.

Reece McLaren Impresses In Flyweight Debut

0

Filipino-Australian Reece “Lightning” McLaren did not disappoint in his flyweight debut against Thailand’s Anatpong “Mak Mak” Bunrad.

On Friday, 10 November, at ONE: LEGENDS OF THE WORLD, it did not even take a full round for McLaren to finish his opponent with his slick black belt Brazilian jiu-jItsu game.

Near the end of the first round, the 26-year-old was able to secure a D’Arce choke, which sealed the deal on Bunrad and ended the action at the Mall Of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines.

The first round began with kicks galore from Bunrad, but the always-composed McLaren shrugged it off with a smile. Midway through the stanza, “Lightning” was able to complete a double leg takedown and bring the contest where he wanted it.

Bunrad’s guard retention and control on the ground initially let him get back to the feet for a split second, but McLaren immediately drove in, picked his opponent up, and slammed the Phuket Top Team representative to the ground.

McLaren, a product of Australia’s Potential Unlimited Mixed Martial Arts, found his way to the mount position and locked in an arm-triangle choke, but Bunrad fought it off. Upon transition, the BJJ ace immediately adjusted to a D’Arce choke, which forced the tap from the Thai.

The end came with just eight seconds left in round one. McLaren is off to a lightning start in his new flyweight home. The former ONE Bantamweight World Title challenger elevates his record to 10-5.

Zhao Zhi Kang Dominates Thai Rithy, Earns Submission Win

0

Zhao Zhi Kang made an impressive promotional debut in ONE Championship, and kicked off the main card of ONE: LEGENDS OF THE WORLD in exciting fashion.

On Friday, 10 November, at the Mall Of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines, the Chinese featherweight submitted Kun Khmer specialist Thai “The Buffalo” Rithy via rear-naked choke in the opening stanza.

Rithy looked to establish his right hand from the opening bell, as he took the center of the cage and put Zhao on his back foot. The Chinese featherweight responded by circling around Rithy and hitting a quick takedown.

Although the Cambodian scooted backward towards the cage and tried to get back to his feet, he desperately grabbed the fence. Referee Olivier Coste rebuked him, and then Zhao immediately took him back down.

From there, Zhao transitioned his way to the full mount and started to unload punishment, blasting Rithy with an elbow that made him turn over and give up his back.

Unfortunately for Rithy, that only made a bad situation worse as the 22-year-old Chinese athlete immediately flattened him out and locked an arm deep under his chin.

The Cambodian has no choice but to tap. Zhao secured the win at 2:31 of the first round. He improves to 23-3 with the rear-naked choke victory.

Four Dynamic Finishes Top ONE: LEGENDS OF THE WORLD Prelims

0

It was another thrilling preliminary card at ONE: LEGENDS OF THE WORLD on Friday, 10 November, as both newcomers and recognized names took to the cage in Manila, Philippines, in front of a passionate crowd at the Mall Of Asia Arena.

With all to battle for, the athletes in the opening four contests were determined not to be forgotten, and provided the world with some memorable moments. Every bout ended via stoppage, and it left the crowd suitably excited for an epic main card.

Gina Iniong Scores Second-Round TKO

It was wushu versus wushu, as Gina “Conviction” Iniong met Priscilla “Thathie” Lumbangaol in the final preliminary bout in Manila.

However, instead of standing in front of her Indonesian opponent and going shot for shot, the Philippines’ Iniong decided to employ a different tactic, using her clinch game to outwork Lumbangaol on the fence.

For the majority of the first round, she pressured “Thathie” to the fence and chipped away with knees, even managing to secure a trip takedown in the early running.

Although Gaol started the second round with a perfectly-timed right hand on the advancing Team Lakay warrior, it just seemed to spur Iniong on, as she secured another takedown and upped the pressure.

Trapping the Siam Tigershark product’s arm in a crucifix position from side control, “Conviction” pounded away until the referee stepped in, as Gaol had no escape and was taking too many punches.

Iniong went through the gears, scoring a definitive finish at 2:12 of the second round. She moves her record to 6-2.

Joshua Pacio Spins To Knockout Win Over Roy Doliguez

The all-Philippines strawweight battle was very much a ground contest in the first round, despite both men being well-versed in the striking arts.

Joshua “The Passion” Pacio initiated the takedown after some hard kicks, and from there, he and Roy “The Dominator” Doliguez jockeyed for position in a back-and-forth grappling battle.

Pacio had the better share of dominant positions, but Doliguez would not just go quietly, bridging and sweeping from the bottom several times. The former pro boxer would get a yellow card for fingers in the eyes as he escaped a guillotine choke, but Team Lakay’s Pacio returned with more pressure from the top when the fight resumed.

Pacio came out kicking once again in round two, as “The Dominator” tried to reply with his hands. Spinning kicks flashed by Doliguez’s head several times, but then as “The Passion” stepped in with a low kick, he continued his momentum and landed a powerful spinning back fist straight to the jaw. The powerful blow sent Doliguez crashing face first to the mat, and Referee Olivier Coste dived in right away to stop the contest at 0:38 of round two.

The young Filipino returns to his winning ways with a huge knockout victory, advancing his record to 10-2 and once again showing that he is one of the strawweight division’s best talents.

Xie Chao TKOs Kelvin Ong In First Round

China’s Xie Chao was described as a grappling-focused athlete in the introductions, but it was his pinpoint striking which led to a finish early in the first round.

Malaysian kickboxer Kelvin “Ice Man” Ong threw with aggression in the opening stages, but in doing so, he left himself open for a huge knee that sent him stumbling to the mat.

Xie, clearly a well-versed competitor, followed his opponent to the floor and chipped away with punches and knees from side control. A cut above Ong’s right eye, courtesy of the earlier knee, opened up even more with some ground strikes, which caused referee Kemp Cheng to call in the doctors to take a look.

They ruled “Ice Man” unable to continue, awarding Xie a TKO victory after 1:48 of action. The Chinese athlete, who gets his second promotional win in two months, pushes his record to 4-1.

Phat Soda Sent Crashing To The Mat Peng Xue Wen

It was billed as a striker versus wrestler matchup, as Cambodian Kun Khmer specialist Phat Soda met Chinese Greco-Roman Wrestling Champion Peng Xue Wen. From the opening bell, it was clear that Peng had a firm plan and intended to stick to it.

He shot in for a takedown straight away, and managed some success from side control and mount. Soda, to his credit, managed to sweep and get to the top position, but he was not able to keep his opponent pinned.

As Peng worked back to his feet, he used the scramble to get to his opponent’s back and unleashed a massive belly-to-back suplex, which sent Soda crashing down into the canvas. The impact knocked the Cambodian out after just 2:17 of the first round, showing wrestling can finish bouts in emphatic fashion.

Impressive in his ONE Championship debut, the Chinese athlete’s skill set will be a big threat in the bustling strawweight division.

Myanmar jails Singaporean, Malaysian journalists for 2 months over drone use

0

NAYPYIDAW: A Myanmar court jailed two journalists on assignment for Turkey’s state broadcaster, along with their interpreter and driver, for two months on Friday (Nov 11) for violating an aircraft law by filming with a drone.

Cameraman Lau Hon Meng from Singapore and reporter Mok Choy Lin from Malaysia, were detained on Oct 27 along with their Myanmar interpreter, Aung Naing Soe, and driver, Hla Tin.

The four had been working on a documentary for TRT World, the English-language subsidiary of the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation, when they were detained for attempting to fly a drone near parliament in the capital, Naypyidaw.

While none of the four detained is a Turkish national, the case has further strained diplomatic ties in the wake of President Tayyip Erdogan accusing Myanmar’s military of carrying out a “genocide” against the Buddhist-majority country’s Rohingya Muslim minority.

Police initially began investigations into whether they had violated an import-export rule that carries a penalty of up to three years in jail, but the judge in the case opted to introduce a fresh charge of contravening the 1934 Burma Aircraft Act, which carries a maximum sentence of three months.

Both the cameraman and reporter pleaded guilty to the lesser charge, and the judge sentenced all four to two months, according to a Reuters reporter at the hearing.

The Myanmar Information Ministry released this photo of a drone confiscated from the two journalists detained in Nay Pyi Taw.

“The detainees admitted that they committed the crime hoping they would only be fined, so it shocked us when the judge sentenced them to two months,” said defence lawyer Khin Maung Zaw.

The lawyer said he would appeal for a reduction in the sentence to a fine.

Before proceedings began on Friday, Mok told reporters in the court that they were sorry for any disrespect of the Myanmar’s laws, but complained that the legal process had lacked transparency.

“We have no idea what is going on and we are not allowed to speak to our family,” she said.

“And the rules and procedures are not explained to us. We were asked to sign statements that are completely in Burmese that we cannot understand.”

POSSIBLE NEW CHARGES

A fresh hearing will be held on Nov 16 to determine whether charges will be laid for violating the import-export rules.

A lawyer told Channel NewsAsia that given the “harsh” sentence on Friday, he is not optimistic about the upcoming hearing.

Anyone who flouts the import-export rules could be jailed for up to three years.

Interpreter Aung Naing Soe told reporters as he was brought to court the four had not been mistreated while in custody, though police had asked about who they had spoken to and about the trips he had made to several of Myanmar’s restive regions, including Rakhine.

Myanmar says the military counter-insurgency clearance operation launched in August was provoked by Rohingya militant attacks on security posts in Rakhine State, and has denied both Erdogan’s accusation and a top UN official’s description of the operation as a “classic case of ethnic cleansing”.

More than 600,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled Myanmar for neighbouring Bangladesh since the military operation began.
