Banksy and other street artists in a major show at next year’s Singapore Art Week

0

SINGAPORE: A major exhibition on street art – featuring important works by artists such as Banksy, Shepard Fairey, JR and Space Invader – will be held at ArtScience Museum next year.

Art From The Streets, which opens on Jan 13, is touted as the first big street art retrospective to be shown in Southeast Asia.

Spanning 40 years of the art movement, it will comprise 200 pieces from 50 of the world’s best known street artists. These include paintings, installations, archives, sketches and even on-site projects by visiting artists. Emerging street artists from the region will also be included.

Regarded by many as one of the most famous – and infamous – street artists around, the elusive UK artist Banksy is known for his satirical and politically loaded graffiti. This year, he controversially set up a hotel in the Palestinian territories. Meanwhile, Fairey is an American artist behind the OBEY brand, who is best known for his “Hope” poster featuring former US president Barack Obama.

The street art exhibition is one of the highlights of next year’s Singapore Art Week (SAW), which will run from Jan 17 to 28. The sixth edition of the annual art showcase comprises over 100 events, including exhibitions, talks, and tours.

Aside from the street art retrospective, other highlights include the Light To Night Festival. Previously called the Civic District Outdoor Festival and first held last August, it has now been permanently moved to January as one of SAW’s marquee events.

The festival will feature outdoor events across institutions in the Civic District, including Art Skins On Monuments, a series of works projected unto the facades of buildings, which will be created by 30 local illustrators and media artists.

Another new addition is DISINI, a site-specific festival that will be held for nine months at Gillman Barracks. Its first iteration will include outdoor sculptures and murals by eight artists, and an all-purpose pavilion.

The two festivals join Aliwal Arts Centre’s own urban art fest, which will also put the spotlight on street art and other subcultures.

A joint initiative by the National Arts Council, Singapore Tourism Board, and the Singapore Economic Development Board, the annual SAW is a way to raise the profile of the local art industry as well as provide an opportunity for participating Singapore artists to push their own artistic boundaries, said Linda de Mello, the arts council’s director for sector development (visual arts).

She added that the diversity of next year’s programmes will bring a richness of experience to audiences from different communities.

Other returning events during SAW include the eighth edition of the fair Art Stage Singapore, the Little India tours, and the films-meet-art State Of Motion tours. The latter will revisit seminal Malay language films and instead of its previous bus tour format, it now will include a boat trip to Pulau Sekudu, off Pulau Ubin.

Among the shows presented by individual artists are urban artist Samantha Lo’s interactive installation Progress: The Game Of Leaders, based on the block-stacking game; recent Young Artist Award recipient Kray Chen’s 5 Rehearsals For A Wedding, which looks at the rituals of Chinese weddings in Singapore; and an exhibition of works by one of Singapore’s most overlooked artists, the late sculptor and printmaker Kim Lim.

Singapore navy commissions 2 new littoral mission vessels

0

SINGAPORE: Two more littoral mission vessels (LMV) from the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) have become fully operational, with a commissioning ceremony held at Changi Naval Base on Tuesday (Nov 14).

The RSS Sovereignty and RSS Unity are the second and third LMVs in the fleet, after the RSS Independence was commissioned six months ago.

Designed and built locally, the LMVs are equipped with smarter technology and sharper capabilities, and the commissioning of the latest vessels marks “a significant milestone in the RSN’s continued transformation to strengthen its capabilities”, the navy said.

In his speech at the commissioning ceremony, Minister for Defence Ng Eng Hen highlighted the need to adapt and prepare for future challenges as the range of threats and spectrum of missions have expanded.

He noted that the Singapore navy already contributes to regional and global security through taking part in joint patrols in the Strait of Malacca, as well as being part of international efforts to counter piracy in the Gulf of Aden.

“Going forward, the demands on our RSN will increase. Part of this reflects both the rising trade as well as the military build-up of regional navies in our surrounding waters,” said Dr Ng.

He added that the LMVs are future-ready ships built to respond to different mission requirements, and fulfil the navy’s role in keeping Singapore’s sea lines of communication secure and accessible for the nation’s economic growth and prosperity.

“The LMVs represent a quantum jump compared to its predecessor, the Fearless-class patrol vessels. Whether it is speed, endurance, anti-air or Command, Control, Communications and Computers (C4) capabilities, the LMVs outperform by leaps and bounds the Patrol Vessels that were built in the 1990s,” said Dr Ng.

There will be eight LMVs altogether that will replace the ageing Fearless-class Patrol Vessels which have been in service for more than 20 years.

The remaining five LMVs are expected to be operational by 2020.

Singles Day is not just for China anymore

0

Singles Day has become the world’s largest shopping event as Alibaba announced its sales hit $25.4 billion this weekend. The figure not only surpassed the Chinese e-commerce giant’s own record but is also topped Black Friday and Cyber Monday US sales combined.

But Singles Day, marked on Nov. 11, is not just for the Chinese anymore.

Lazada, Southeast Asia’s e-commerce platform backed by Alibaba, pushed Singles Day aggressively in the region.

This year, the event generated $123 million of gross merchandise value for Lazada, representing a 171 per cent increase since last year’s Singles Day. Shoppers on the company’s Southeast Asian marketplaces ordered 6.5 million items, which was 191 per cent more than last year.

Popular items included electronics, diapers and women’s fashion items.

In Thailand, Lazada hosted a massive televised gala with celebrities counting down until the shopping deals began at midnight. The programme aired online and on one of Thailand’s most popular television channels.

In Singapore, Lazada partnered with Expedia to sponsor a trip to NASA facilities in Florida in an effort to promote the sales.

“Our key success metric is how engaged everyone has been during the day,” Aimone Ripa di Meana, Lazada’s chief marketplace officer and co-founder, told CNBC.

“Campaigns happen throughout the year, but this is really the one we have invested the most in and we’re creating an engagement and a buzz that is absolutely unique,” he added, addressing the saturation of other promotional days like Oct. 10, Dec. 12, Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Lazada worked with many of its existing partners, including P&G, Unilever, L’Oreal and Samsung leading up to the event. But the company also sees the event as an opportunity for newcomers, too.

For one, MLAB Holdings, which distributes Sweden-designed Happy Socks into Southeast Asia, ordered 20 to 30 per cent more stock in anticipation of Singles Day, according to Mack Chua the company’s managing director. Chua, who ran a “buy one, get one free” promotion during the event, said he had only been selling on Lazada for several months.

Following the event, he told CNBC that he sold fives times the amount of socks than the previous Saturday – but the overall sales actually came in less than what he’d expected. “Sales were okay, but we will consolidate our products for Cyber Monday and Black Friday,” he said.

Singles Day wasn’t only limited to Lazada’s ecosystem – other e-commerce ventures seized the opportunity.

One such business was Covetella, a dress rental start-up based in Singapore, which ran an email campaign proclaiming “Happy Singles Day!”

“We knew people would be on the lookout for deals,” said Carol Chen, founder and CEO of Covetella. “Our business is heavily event-oriented so we also wanted to give women an excuse to dress up and treat themselves just because.”

Chen said the click-through rate on the company’s email promotion was higher than normal.

“Part of our mission behind Covetella is to help people celebrate life, so I like the idea of Singles Day as another occasion and excuse to dress up and enjoy yourself,” she added.

WATCH: 'You are the light' – Philippines' Duterte croons at Trump's request

0

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte crooned a hit Filipino love song at a dinner gala in Manila ahead of an annual summit on Sunday (November 12), at one point taking the microphone to sing “Ikaw” (You), in a duet with local pop diva Pilita Corrales.

One of the song’s verses, translated from Filipino, begins: “You are the light in my world, a half of this heart of mine”.

The United States and its former colony, the Philippines, have been strategic allies since World War Two. But their relations have been strained by anti-US outbursts from Duterte and his enthusiasm for better ties with Russia and China.

On Monday (November 13), Trump said he had a “great relationship” with his Philippine counterpart, while Duterte told the US president that the Philippines is an important ally during their meeting at the sidelines of a summit of East and Southeast Asian leaders in Manila.

RYDE launches 'UberPOOL for school kids' so they can sleep in a little more in the mornings

0

Last year, we wrote about Schoolber, a carpooling service targeted at school children.

And recently, local ride-sharing app Ryde has jumped on the bandwagon to offer a similar service.

Called RydeSchool, it aims to help parent drivers cut costs through carpooling, and give them an alternative to school bus, which typically requires kids to leave home as early as 5.45am.

In other words, this new service is a saving grace for busy working parents, for they no longer need to deal with the bus’ early call time.

Instead, it lets parents sleep in a little more instead of waking up extra early to prepare and send their kids to school.

How Does It Work?

Launched three weeks ago, RydeSchool matches parents who live in the same neighbourhood, and those with children going to the same school.

They can view each other’s profiles, chat, and also negotiate the suggested fee for the carpool.

Photo: RYDE

Ryde iterates that this service is not to help drivers make a profit but to help them cut down on costs such as petrol expenses.

In fact, its fees are similar to Ryde’s other carpooling services and are calculated based on distance.

According to The Straits Times, a 15km journey from Sengkang to Singapore Chinese Girls’ School in Dunearn Road will cost about $11. This works out to about $220 a month for a one-way trip.

This is pricier than a one-way journey on an 11-seater school bus, which apparently costs only $150 a month.

However, the “point-to-point” nature of carpooling means that children can leave home later and get more sleep.

In a way, parents need to fork out a wee bit more cash to trade off for this convenience.

Will This Service Gain Traction?

So far, about 40,000 drivers have signed up for the Ryde service.

Unlike Schoolber, which did not have enough parent drivers to meet the carpool requests, Ryde’s founder and CEO Terence Zou, said that he is confident that there will be sufficient parent drivers on its platform.

“We have a big network of peer-to-peer members already, so we are not starting from zero,” he told ST.

In any case, ride-sharing services such as UberPOOL and GrabShare are already popular among Singaporeans, so I foresee that this service will also gain traction among parents.

However, putting aside its heftier price tag (compared to a school bus), I think parents would be more concerned with the safety of RydeSchool.

Similar to Schoolber, some parents have raised concerns about whether there will be insurance that covers their children in cases of accidents.

With school buses, insurance is usually guaranteed and parents can be assured in knowing that they are covered lest something untoward happens.

Another issue that parents were concerned about is whether they could trust a parent-driver enough and put their children’s lives in the hands of a stranger.

At the end of the day, the safety of the child is of utmost importance to parents, and Ryde should address these concerns if they want to increase traction of its new service among parents.

E-commerce frameworks, ASEAN network of smart cities on the cards: PM Lee

0

MANILA: Singapore hopes to build up e-commerce frameworks, cyber capabilities and create an ASEAN network of smart cities as the incoming chairman for the regional bloc, the country’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said on Tuesday (Nov 14).

Mr Lee was speaking at a commemorative summit marking 20 years of partnership among ASEAN, China, Japan and South Korea, collectively called ASEAN Plus Three.

It is important that the group finds innovative ways to harness the opportunities afforded by new technologies, he said, adding that the East Asian countries are already at the forefront of technology adoption, particularly in e-commerce and smart cities.

“There is tremendous potential if we combine efforts and leverage on each other’s strengths,” he said. ASEAN’s digital economy is projected to grow by 500 per cent, to around US$200 billion (S$272 billion) by 2025, he added.

On Monday, at a summit with China, Mr Lee said there is much ASEAN can learn from the regional superpower when it comes to financial technology, e-commerce and smart cities.

Since its establishment in 1997, ASEAN Plus Three has been a “valuable mechanism in our regional architecture”, Mr Lee said. “It has catalysed mutually beneficial cooperation across fields such as tourism, finance, health, education and food security,” he said.

He added that ASEAN Plus Three has fostered collaboration and sense of collective during tough times, such as the financial crises and the SARS epidemic.

A report published by the ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office (AMRO), earlier this year said that the Asian financial crisis in 1997 was a “landmark event” for ASEAN Plus Three that spurred intra-regional integration in trade and investment and led to systems to ease the impact of global threats. Separately, the SARS epidemic in 2003 also prompted the countries to establish frameworks and mechanisms to combat such highly infectious outbreaks.

ASEAN PLUS THREE AN “ECONOMIC NEXUS”: PM LEE

Describing ASEAN Plus Three as an “economic nexus”, Mr Lee said that in 2016, ASEAN’s merchandise trade with the Plus Three countries amounted to nearly US$700 billion, or 31 per cent of ASEAN’s total merchandise trade.

Mr Lee added that ASEAN is happy to adopt the Manila Declaration on the 20th Anniversary of ASEAN Plus Three Cooperation. The declaration will take note of the significant achievements of the ASEAN Plus Three in the last two decades and also set the direction and priorities for the coming years.

Still, there is a need to further advance economic and financial integration, he said. While he said he was glad to see the region pressing on with economic integration amid growing sentiments against globalisation, he reiterated that it is important to intensify efforts to conclude a high-quality and comprehensive Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).

RCEP is a free trade agreement under negotiation since 2012, involving ASEAN Plus Three along with India, Australia and New Zealand. RCEP will bring tangible benefits to the group’s businesses and citizens, and “show the world that East Asia is confident in our economic future”, he said.

ENHANCING CONNECTIVITY TO IMPROVE LINKS

“It is also encouraging that we are deepening regional connectivity to enhance our physical, institutional and people-to-people linkages,” Mr Lee said. He said that cruise tourism is a “particularly promising sector” to deepen infrastructural and people-to-people connectivity among the countries.

He said this as he spoke about the “potential synergy” among the Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity 2025 and Plus Three countries’ initiatives on infrastructure. ASEAN’s plan surrounds sustainable infrastructure, digital innovation, seamless logistics, regulatory excellence and people mobility.

“We can also push ahead with practical demonstration projects of common interest to showcase our commitment to promote connectivity,” he added.

He said that tourist flows across East Asia are rising rapidly, citing figures. Plus Three countries accounted for more than a quarter of tourist arrivals into ASEAN in 2015, up from just over a fifth in 2014, he noted.

He added that the group should continue to strengthen key ASEAN Plus Three initiatives such as AMRO and the Chiang Mai Initiative Multilateralisation. AMRO is seen as the Asian version of the International Monetary Fund and has been described as an “early warning mechanism” that can provide policy recommendations to avert crises, while the Chiang Mai Initiative functions as a joint reserve that provides loans for countries in financial trouble.

MAINTAINING REGIONAL PEACE AND STABILITY

He also spoke on the need to work together to maintain regional peace and stability. “Regional security is the cornerstone of our growth and development,” he said, adding that Singapore is “deeply concerned” about the situation in the Korean Peninsula.

Singapore strongly condemns recent provocations by North Korea, he said.

“These actions pose a severe threat to regional peace, security and stability. Any miscalculation will have devastating consequences,” he said, urging North Korea to desist from its provocations and abide by international obligations and commitments.

In concluding his remarks, Mr Lee said that as ASEAN chair in 2018, Singapore will do its best to further deepen growing ties with the Plus Three countries and work towards achieving the long-term goal of building an East Asian Community.

“We should build on the ASEAN Plus Three’s dynamic character, and strengthen its role in our open and inclusive regional architecture,” he said.

Viral video shows Thai senior health official's car hitting guard, dragging him along

0

A video clip that has gone viral shows a senior health official’s car hitting a security guard in Nonthaburi and dragging him along for quite a distance.

The driver of the vehicle has been named as Dr Yorn Chiranakhon, a senior official at the Public Health Ministry.

From the clip, his car appeared to have stopped for several seconds after hitting the victim, but then moved forward dragging the man along with it.

The victim is 22-year-old Somchai Yarmdee, who has sustained serious injuries and is receiving treatment at Nangklao Hospital in Nonthaburi.

The accident took place in the compound of the Public Health Ministry at about 8.30pm last Friday.

Muang Nonthaburi police station superintendent Pol Colonel Pannapat Dejchotepisit said Yorn was at the scene of the accident when police arrived.

“He admitted to having caused the accident, but refused to undergo a breathalyser test,” Pannapat said.

Police intend charging Yorn with reckless driving that caused serious injury to another person, as well as drunk-driving, he added. Damrongrit Jitthavornmanee, a taxi motorcyclist, said he believed the driver must have been aware that his car had hit someone, but still drove on. “I witnessed the incident. The car stopped a bit, before moving forward again,” he said.

Defecting North Korean soldier shot several times after abandoning escape car

0

SEOUL – The North Korean soldier shot while defecting to the South was racing towards the border in a car when a wheel came loose, forcing him to escape on foot under fire from North Korean soldiers, the South Korean government and military said on Tuesday (Nov 14).

North Korea’s military showed a “flurry of action” when the defector was spotted driving towards the South alone in a four-wheel drive vehicle on Monday, Roh Jae Cheon, a spokesman for the South’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, said in a media briefing.

The North Korean soldier was subject to a shower of roughly 40 rounds, according a South Korean defence ministry official who was briefing lawmakers regarding Monday’s event.

The soldier took cover behind a South Korean structure within the Joint Security Area (JSA) inside the demilitarised zone between the two Koreas and was later rescued by South Korean and US soldiers at the border, the United Nations Command (UNC) said in a separate statement.

It said the soldier had been shot by several North Korean soldiers.

The military armistice commission of the United Nations said in the same UNC statement that it had informed the North Korean military that the soldier, who was found about 50m south of the Military Demarcation Line, had been undergoing surgeries for his gunshot wounds.

The soldier is in a critical condition.

The UNC said an investigation into Monday’s event was ongoing. Roh said no South Korean or US soldiers were wounded during the incident and the defence ministry official said North Korea’s military was not showing any unusual movements on Tuesday.

Taxi drivers refuse to pick up passengers, leaving hotel porter in tears from guests' scoldings

0

Stomp contributor Sylvia is frustrated that taxi drivers are able to pick and choose their passengers, leaving hotel porters to bear the brunt of the scoldings from other hotel guests.

The Stomp contributor was at Fairmont Hotel for dinner on 10 Nov. She was trying to get a taxi to Ang Mo Kio.

However, each taxi that came refused to take her after giving an ‘excuse’ to the hotel porter.

She wrote:

“Passengers behind me, foreigners were also so angry and scolded the bell-hop. The bell-hop was in tears and I tried to defend him but to no avail.”

In a telephone interview with Stomp, Sylvia elaborated, “Perhaps the bell hop shouldn’t ask the taxi drivers where they wanted to go.”

She also told Stomp that the hotel porter was scolded very badly by a guest in the queue last week because the taxi drivers refused to pick up passengers.

According to the Stomp contributor, the hotel porter told her that ‘it feels like I don’t know how to do my job’.

Sylvia later approached another taxi and the taxi driver rolled down his window to ask her where she was going.

According to the Stomp contributor, the taxi driver declined as he said he was there to fetch some staff home. When he was questioned about the taxi sign which was lit up, he replied, “I turn it off now” and drove away.

She eventually used Grab to book a ride to Ang Mo Kio.

“I am very pissed off about the situation. One then wonder, why people are taking Grab and Uber more often than normal taxis.”

“It was not just one driver’s behaviour, but a whole string of them. Perhaps the authorities could go down and check this out for themselves,” added the Stomp contributor.
