Singapore receives first import of live pigs from Malaysia in 18 years

0

SINGAPORE: The first shipment of live pigs from Malaysia in 18 years arrived in Singapore on Saturday (Nov 18), said the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA).

Imports of live pigs and raw pork from Malaysia were suspended in 1999 due to a Nipah virus outbreak. Since then, Singapore’s only source of live pigs has been from Pulau Bulan in Indonesia.

Even though there have been no reports of new Nipah virus outbreaks in Malaysia, the import suspension stayed because of Foot Mouth Disease (FMD).

However, Sarawak in East Malaysia was declared free of FMD in 2010 by the World Organisation for Animal Health.

AVA then approved frozen pork from Sarawak in 2015 and earlier this year, it gave the go-ahead for live pigs from a farm in the state.

“The import of raw pork from other parts of Malaysia is not permitted as they are not free of FMD,” said AVA. “Only processed pork products from approved establishments in Malaysia that have been heat-treated to inactivate FMD are allowed to be imported from Malaysia.”

Singapore’s pork supply comes from 24 countries that have been accredited by the AVA to export frozen pork products. Six countries, including Australia, the US and Canada, are allowed to export chilled pork to Singapore.

With the approval of imports from Sarawak, Singapore now has two sources of live pigs. They are slaughtered locally and sold as chilled pork, said AVA.

“Source diversification is a key food security strategy. Purchasing from diverse sources provides a crucial buffer against potential short-term overseas food supply disruptions from any one source,” it added.

Maserati driver charged after hitting TP officer in hit-and-run along Bedok Reservoir Rd

0

A Maserati driver, Lee Cheng Yan, 34, injured an on-duty Traffic Police (TP) officer in a hit-and-run accident on Friday night (Nov 17).

Lee was arrested on Saturday morning (Nov 18) and charged in court for a rash act causing grievous hurt.

A video of the Maserati driver fleeing the scene after the accident was captured and uploaded onto Facebook by user Yan Han.

In the video, a motorcyclist attempted to give chase but was unable to keep up with Lee’s Maserati.

According to an initial official statement from the police released on Saturday (Nov 18) at 1am, it was looking for Lee, who had accelerated his Maserati towards an on-duty Traffic Police (TP) officer when stopped during an enforcement check along Bedok Reservoir Road at around 9.20pm on Friday (Nov 17).

The officer suffered multiple injuries and was conveyed to Changi General Hospital for treatment.

In an updated statement at 4.21am, the police said that officers have tracked down and arrested Lee at a Housing and Development Board (HDB) unit in Geylang Bahru Road.

Lee’s Maserati had earlier been found abandoned at Cedar Avenue.

This was not Lee’s first offence.

In July 2017, Lee was fined $13,500 for an illegal modification on his Maserati – installing an altered exhaust system on it – and also causing an accident at Orchard Road in 2016, which saw a motorcyclist being injured.

Lee has been caught a total of eight times between May 2013 and November 2015 for usage of the altered car.

For his latest offence, he was charged with the offence of rash act causing grievous hurt in court on Saturday morning.

If convicted, Lee faces up to 4 years’ jail and a fine which may extend to $10,000 or both.

Heavy rain causes flash floods at Yishun, Mandai Road

0

SINGAPORE: A heavy downpour on Saturday afternoon (Nov 18) caused flash floods at Yishun and along Mandai Road, said national water agency PUB.

In warned in a Facebook post at about 4.45pm that water level at Yishun Avenue 2, Yishun Avenue 5 as well as Mandai Road had risen, and there was a “high flood risk”.

At one HDB carpark in Yishun, the wheels of vehicles were partially submerged, as seen in a video by Facebook user Sadali Yobahs.

Heavy rain fell over many parts of Singapore in the afternoon.

The National Environment Agency (NEA) had put out a heavy rain warning at about 4.15pm, saying that moderate to heavy thundery showers with gusty winds were expected over many areas.

Amid the rain, several accidents were reported, including one at Sembawang Road at around 4.55pm.

Two people were taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, said the Singapore Civil Defence Force.

An accident at the junction of Lorong Chencharu and Sembawang Road.

According to the Met Service in an advisory on Friday, the wet weather experienced in the first half of November is expected to persist for the rest of the month

With November usually being the second-wettest month of the year after December, “moderate to heavy thundery showers” are expected mostly in the afternoons on six to eight days of the month, said the Met Service.

Ben Affleck cracked a rape joke during a 'Justice League' interview

0

It’s been said that people who get away with bad behaviour once have the propensity to do it again. There’s no better example for that than misogynists and sex offenders. That’s how Harvey Weinstein got away with decades of abuse. That’s how rape culture morphed into something deeply ingrained in our society, it’s so hard to call it out.

That’s how Ben Affleck, a mere weeks after the Weinstein scandal broke out and as more stories of sexual harassment in Hollywood are coming to light, dared to make another rape joke on camera.

In an interview for the upcoming movie Justice League, the cast was asked which female superhero they’d want to include in the team if given the chance. Ezra Miller and Ray Fisher, who play The Flash and Cyborg respectively, gave decent answers.

on Twitter

As Ray was trying to explain what they’d do with the new character, Ben cut him off. “I think it would just create a different dynamic, you know? But-“

“Are you following the news at all?” cut in Ben. Which no one acknowledged, except with disgusted looks.

Ray continued to answer the question and the interview carried on. But no one is set on forgetting that moment.

So much for speaking up against Harvey, Ben. It shows that you, sir, are the one who isn’t following the news at all.

It must be said how Ben Affleck once groped Hilarie Burton during an interview with TRL. The incident, much like this one, was also caught on camera. Here’s an idea: Why not just not put a camera to Ben’s face at all? The man can’t have air time if he can’t renounce his misogynistic ways. Deal?

Justice League is currently playing in theatres. We’ll leave you to decide if it’s best to catch the movie or to simply turn those stan cards in.

SINGAPORE: Hello Kitty and her Sanrio friends landed at Changi Airport on Friday (Nov 17) to bring festive cheer to travellers and airport visitors.

The cute-fest lasts till Jan 5 next year.

Here’s what visitors can expect:

SINGAPORE’S LARGEST INDOOR DRONE SHOW

The games include a human claw-machine called Tree House Catcher. Instead of a mechanical claw, a human (who has to be less than 60kg and at least 1.2m in height) is suspended from a device acting as a “crane”. Another person then controllers the human “claw” to choose a variety of gifts hidden in capsules.

Visitors can also customise their own tote bags with stamps or get glitter tattoos done, as well as take photos with miniature versions of their favourite characters.

SANRIO-THEMED PLAYGROUND

According to Changi, the playground is a “first in any airport in Asia”.

SELFIE TIME!

The airport’s terminals are filled with decor themed after Hello Kitty and her friends, so whip out that phone / camera.

These include a 4m-tall Hello Kitty topiary at Terminal 2…

And a Christmas tree made of plush toys at Terminal 1.

Every weekend, visitors will also get to cuddle up to a selected Sanrio character.
