SINGAPORE: By the middle of next year, seven banks in Singapore will offer consumers the option of paying using NETS QR code.

In a joint press briefing on Monday (Nov 20), DBS Bank, OCBC and UOB said they have come onboard NETS’ QR code platform. They will be joined by HSBC, Maybank and Standard Chartered Bank to enable this payment offering.

Citibank is also on board, offering the payment option for small, cash-based merchants, they said.

The unified QR code payment platform will be able to accept payments from customers using NETSPay, DBS PayLah!, OCBC Pay Anyone and UOB Mighty, while the four foreign retail banks are “expected to offer this service shortly”.

All of NETS’ acceptance points will be QR code-enabled by mid-2018, according to the press release.

To encourage the installation of NETS terminals by hawkers, NETS is waiving all terminal and transaction fees for three years, it said.

As for consumers, NETS and the three local banks are launching a S$15 million, four-month promotion campaign. From Nov 17 to Mar 31, 2018, the first 288 customers who make eight QR code payments a month at any participating hawker centre will receive S$28 in rebates.

During the same period, the top three hawkers who have the highest number of cashless transactions on a monthly basis will receive $388, $288 and $188, respectively, they added.

Currently, hawker centres with NETS QR payment capability include Yishun Park Hawker Centre, Tanjong Pagar Plaza Food Centre, Redhill Food Centre and Amoy Street Food Centre.

Single mother claims insurance agent proposed on first date, bedded her and took her money

0

A single mother claimed that an insurance agent charmed her into having sex and lending him money after proposing to her at their first date.

The single mother, Ms Liu, told Shin Min Daily News that she had met the man through an app, and the two decided to meet up in person after one month of chatting.

Ms Liu said: “On our first date, he took out a ring and proposed to me, saying that I was ‘the one’.

“I was flattered and shocked.”

Ms Liu said that the man later explained that he had originally intended to propose to his ex-girlfriend with said ring, but the two broke up unexpectedly.

He has since kept the ring by his side.

She continued: “He told me that he would design a new ring for me to show me his sincerity, so I did not take the ring.”

However, Ms Liu added, it was just the beginning of a nightmare.

When the two met up in July for the third time, the man told Ms Liu that he had lost all his clients’ money in a bad investment, and had to borrow $1,700 from her.

Said Ms Liu: “He promised to return the money in four days and refused to write an IOU.

“When it was time for him to pay up, he repeatedly delayed and came up with all sorts of excuses.

“Then he became uncontactable.”

According to Ms Liu, it has been four months since, and she has not gotten back a single cent.

She lodged a police report on Aug 30, 2017.

In response to media queries, a police spokesman confirmed the incident.

When reporters contacted the man, he denied the allegations and said that Ms Liu had attempted to seduce him instead.

The man, who wished to remain anonymous, insisted that he had not borrowed any money from Ms Liu.

Instead, he claimed that he had lent her more than $2,000, which she used to purchase various furniture and items.

He added: “I am financially stable, and I just bought a car, which I paid for in entirety.

“My monthly salary is more than $10,000, so I wouldn’t need to borrow money.

“It was her who was trying to seduce me from the start.

“She has cheated a lot of men before me too, and I definitely wasn’t interested in her.”

He also denied proposing to Ms Liu or seducing her.

In response to Ms Liu calling the police, the man said that he has taken legal actions, but did not show any evidence of having made a police report.

'Transparent' star Jeffrey Tambor says he may leave show after harassment allegations

0

NEW YORK – Jeffrey Tambor, the Emmy-winning star of the Amazon web series “Transparent,” said on Sunday he did not see how he could return to the show next season after a second person leveled allegations of sexual harassment against him.

Actress Trace Lysette accused Tambor last week of making sexually charged remarks to her during their work together on the groundbreaking comedy series about a transgender character, as well as acting inappropriately during one alleged incident that “got physical.”

Lysette has appeared as a guest star in multiple episodes of the show’s four seasons, in which Tambor, 73, plays a retired professor in transition who tells his family about his longtime identification as a woman.

In a statement forwarded on Sunday by his publicist, Tambor said he would never have intentionally harassed anyone and regretted if any of his actions were misinterpreted as such.

“I’ve already made clear my deep regret if any action of mine was ever misinterpreted by anyone as being aggressive, but the idea that I would deliberately harass anyone is simply and utterly untrue,” he wrote.

“Given the politicized atmosphere that seems to have afflicted our set, I don’t see how I can return to “Transparent.” Tambor did not explicitly say in the statement he would not return for a fifth season.

In August while receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Tambor, who has a long list of television and movie credits including “Arrested Development” and “The Larry Sanders Show,” called his “Transparent” role “an opportunity of a lifetime, and the responsibility of a lifetime.”

Amazon declined comment. A representative for Lysette did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The issue of sexual harassment is particularly sensitive at Amazon given that Amazon Studios President Roy Price resigned last month following allegations of sexual harassment and inappropriate behaviour from multiple women.

Tambor is one of the latest figures in entertainment or politics to be accused in recent weeks of sexual harassment or misconduct. The wave of allegations, sometimes decades old, has reinvigorated a national dialogue over the issue of sex and the dynamics of power in the workplace.

Amazon had already been investigating allegations of harassment leveled against Tambor by his former assistant on the show, Van Barnes. It said it would widen the probe to include Lysette’s allegations.

In a statement posted to Twitter, Lysette said that Tambor had made “many sexual advances and remarks at me, but one time it got physical.”

She described an incident that allegedly occurred during Season 2 of “Transparent,” in which she and Tambor were dressed in thin pyjamas in a corner of the set.

“He came in close, put his bare feet on top of mine so I could not move, leaned his body against me, and began quick, discreet thrusts back and forth against my body,” the statement read. “I felt his penis against my hip through his thin pyjamas and I pushed him off me.”

Tambor specifically denied the allegations in a statement last week to Variety, writing that he has “never been a predator – ever.”

Phase 2 of deep tunnel sewer system designed to last 100 years

0

SINGAPORE: The second phase of the Deep Tunnel Sewerage System (DTSS) will incorporate innovative features in order for the infrastructure to last 100 years, national water agency PUB said on Monday (Nov 20).

The features include embedded fibre optic cables for remote monitoring; air jumpers to prevent odorous air from escaping into the surroundings; and additional linings to protect against corrosion from bacteria and other micro-organisms.

This was announced at a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday to commemorate the beginning of construction for DTSS Phase 2, which aims to create a network of 40km of deep tunnels and 60km of link sewers.

When completed in 2025, the 100km of tunnels and sewers – equivalent to the length of about 1,100 football fields – will extend the deep tunnel system to cover the western part of Singapore, including the downtown area and major upcoming developments such as Tengah Town and Jurong Lake District.

“The construction of the conveyance system for DTSS Phase 2 will pose a new set of exciting challenges for us, as we look forward to dig deep to navigate through a variety of ground conditions in the Jurong Formation as well as tunnel beneath existing underground infrastructure and even under the sea”, said the director of DTSS Phase 2 Yong Wei Hin, at the groundbreaking ceremony.

Environment and Water Resources Minister Masagos Zulkifli said planning for DTSS started in the 1990s “with a recognition that this is a costly but critical investment that we needed to make to strengthen our long term water security to benefit Singaporeans for generations to come”. DTSS Phase 2 is a S$6.5 billion project, with deep tunnels and link sewers alone costing about S$2.3 billion.

The DTSS Phase 2 conveyance system comprises the South Tunnel, which will transport domestic used water, the Industrial Tunnel for non-domestic used water and associated link sewers, which will largely run under the Ayer Rajah Expressway, as well as underwater.

The tunnels in phase two will connect to the existing ones in the first phase, which is currently serving eastern Singapore. When the entire project is completed in 2025, the whole island will be served by the DTSS.

The DTSS is the nation’s way of collecting and transporting used water from the whole of Singapore to three water reclamation plants – Changi, Kranji and soon, Tuas – for treatment.

The water is then treated and purified to become NEWater, or discharged into the sea.

INNOVATIVE FEATURES FOR A LONGER LIFESPAN

According to the plans, the deep tunnels will be lined with two layers to protect against corrosion, particularly from bacteria and other micro-organisms, as well as gaseous fumes in the harsh sewage environment. For underwater tunnels, there is an additional waterproof membrane to ensure water-tightness.

Fibre optic cables will also be embedded in the concrete lining so as to enable remote monitoring of the tunnels’ structural integrity without the need for physical inspection. PUB said this is especially important when there are construction works in the vicinity.

In the event a physical inspection or repairs are needed, gates will be lowered down vertical shafts to temporarily isolate that part of the tunnel. This makes it dry and safe for workers to carry out inspections. During this time, the incoming used water will be diverted to the link sewer network, before it rejoins the tunnel downstream.

DTSS phase 2 will include innovative features to ensure a 100-year design life.

The second phase of the DTSS will be the first project in Singapore to use air jumpers, whose aim is to push odorous air rising from the deep tunnel back down. The gas will then flow to Odour Control Facilities – which are located away from residential areas – treated, and then released. The air jumpers will also help cut down the number of OFCs.

Once DTSS phase 2 is completed, the existing water reclamation plants at Ulu Pandan and Jurong, as well as pumping stations, will be shut down. This will enable about 214 football fields of land to be freed up for development, PUB said.

“The DTSS is a more cost-effective and sustainable way of meeting Singapore’s used water needs and securing NEWater supply for the future, than simply renewing and expanding the existing conventional used water infrastructure”, added Mr Yong.

It’s also one way to deal with the challenges posed by climate change, like prolonged dry seasons and unpredictable weather patterns, said Mr Masagos.

“It is therefore critical to augment our water sources by reclaiming water so that it can be used again and again, in an endless cycle”, he said, adding that Phase 2 of DTSS will further boost Singapore’s NEWater supply.

South Korea confirms H5N6 bird flu at duck farm, raises bird flu alert level to highest ranking

0

SEOUL – South Korea said it had confirmed an outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N6 bird flu at a duck farm in the south west of the country and raised its bird flu alert level to the highest ranking.

The virus was discovered on a farm on Saturday with some 12,000 ducks in Gochang county, over 270km south-west of Seoul. All of the ducks were slaughtered after the discovery, the agriculture ministry said in a statement on Sunday (Nov 19). This was the country’s first such outbreak since June this year.

The ministry has stepped up disinfection measures to contain a wider spread of the highly contagious bird flu virus and issued a temporary nationwide transport ban of poultry for 48 hours, starting from midnight on Sunday in Seoul.

Bird flu outbreaks typically occur in the winter.

South Korea had its worst battle over bird flu late last year which lasted more than six months, leading to a record culling of farm birds and a nationwide shortage of eggs. But no cases of human infections were reported in the country.
