Thai contestant appeals for votes in Miss Universe 2017 contest

0

If you want to have your say and help Miss Universe Thailand Mareeya Poonlertlarb return home with the Miss Universe 2017 crown, be ready for pre-voting that will open tomorrow at noon.

The beauty queens with the highest number of votes in the competition held in Las Vegas will receive a guaranteed spot in the Top 12. Anyone who wants to vote for Mareeya, a 25-year-old half-Thai, half-Swedish model, can cast their ballot by visiting vote.missuniverse.com.

You will need to log in using Facebook, Twitter or email authentication, and follow the voting instructions. There is a limit of 10 votes per account per day via this method during the voting period.

A second voting approach is via Twitter by submitting a tweet or a retweet with #MissUniverse and a contestant-specific hashtag announced on the website.

For Mareeya, the tweet could be something like: “I support Mareeya to be Miss Universe 2017 #MissUniverse #Thailand.” Miss Universe 2017’s Facebook page said that only the votes that complied with the instructions and rules, and were within the proper voting period, would be counted.

Tweets must not contain subject matter that is sexually explicit, obscene, pornographic, violent, discriminatory, illegal, offensive, threatening, profane or harassing.

Mareeya wore a specially designed Thai outfit under the theme “Making of the Chasing of Light” at the national costume competition on Saturday at the Planet Hollywood Mezzanine in Las Vegas.

The costume, designed by Prapakas Angsusingha, won applause from both Thais and foreigners at the event. The inspiration for the costume came from a Thai native tale about the origins of lightning and thunder from a story in the epic poem, Ramayana.

According to the story, Mekhala, the goddess of lightning who had a magic crystal, accidentally met the Giant Ramasoon, or god of thunder. She refused to give him the magic crystal and he became angry. Mekhala wanted to tease him by soaring into the air, tempting him to follow her. During the chase, the crystal shone and caused lightning. When the giant threw his diamond hammer at her, it caused thunder.

There are two figures incorporated in the costume. Mekhala is a puppet, while Mareeya is Ramasoon in the costume. The costume is in a modern Thai style.

You will be able to watch a broadcast of the official national costume contest on facebook.com/MissUniverse/ and on YouTube next Sunday, November 26 at 9am, Thailand time.

N Korean envoy: We want peace but ready for war with US

0

NORTH KOREAN Ambassador to Thailand Mun Song-mo says his country will “definitely win” any war with the United States if Washington does not drop its “plan to destroy us”.

Calling US President Donald Trump a “mad man”, the envoy from Pyongyang told The Nation in an exclusive interview last Friday: “We now have the hydrogen bomb. If a war breaks out, we are ready to fight and we will surely win the war against the United States.” In the rare interview, the North Korean envoy, however, stressed: “We don’t want to start a war. We want peace. But if we are attacked, we will certainly fight and we have no doubts that we will win.”

Mun attributed his confidence to three factors: “First, we have a great leader, the great Kim Jong-un. Second, the Korean people and the military work closely together under the top leadership and third, we now have nuclear power.”

Asked about the possibility of negotiations to prevent war, Mun said: “How can we negotiate with a leader [Trump] who declared in his UN speech that he would totally destroy North Korea? That means he also wanted to kill all the 25 million North Koreans.

“Negotiations, the envoy said, could only take place when Washington agrees to drop its plan of aggression against North Korea.

The ambassador insisted that despite the UN sanctions engineered by the US, North Korea has been able to stand on its own. He cited the “Juche” self-reliance political ideology as well as the military-first “Songun” national development policy as the two pillars that have helped his country withstand the continuing pressure from the United States.

“During the Korean War [1950-53], we beat the United States although we only had ordinary weapons. Now we have the hydrogen bomb, there is no doubt that we will beat the United States if they threaten us with war,” the ambassador said. He insisted that Pyongyang would use its nuclear power only for defensive purposes.

“We don’t intend to use our nuclear capability in any aggression against other countries. We just want to defend ourselves,” he said. The ambassador cited the recent major naval exercise near the Korean peninsula to which the US dispatched three aircraft carriers as a “direct threat against North Korea”.

He also blamed the United Nations for ignoring “illegal acts” that go against international law by the US in pushing for sanctions against North Korea. “Isn’t it strange that the UN has said nothing about the fact that many countries including the US, China, Russia, India and Israel have also tested their missiles, but it has chosen to target North Korea over the same activity?” the North Korean envoy asked.

He added: “We would like the world to understand that we want peace. We don’t want a war that will destroy everything and kill a large number of people. But if the enemy attacks us, we have no choice but to put up a fight to defend ourselves.”

Mun, 70, was assigned to several diplomatic missions, including in Ethiopia, India and Bangladesh, before being named to head the North Korean Embassy in Thailand four years ago.

All town councils submitted unqualified financial statements except AHTC: MND

0

SINGAPORE: All town councils have submitted unqualified financial statements for the previous financial year, except for Aljunied-Hougang Town Council (AHTC), said the Ministry of National Development (MND) on Monday (Nov 20).

AHTC’s financial statements were qualified by the TC’s external auditor, said MND in the press release.

“The auditor had issued disclaimers as it was unable to ascertain the TC’s opening balances, payables and accrued expenses, or verify staff costs.”

“This is the sixth consecutive year that AHTC has received qualified financial statements from its external auditor,” said MND.

MND also released the FY2016 Town Council Management Report which assesses their performance from April last year to March this year.

This is the first report for the town councils formed after the 2015 General Election and they were assessed under five indicators, using three colour bands.

Twenty Chinese Uighurs use blankets to escape Thai cell

0

BANGKOK – Twenty ethnic Uighur Muslims from China broke out of a detention centre near the Thai-Malaysia border, Thai officials said on Monday, after digging holes in the wall and using blankets as ladders.

The 20 were part of the last remaining group of more than 200 Uighurs who were detained in 2014.

Members of the group identified themselves as Turkish citizens and asked to be sent to Turkey but more than 100 were forcibly returned to China in July 2015, a move that sparked international condemnation, including from rights groups who feared they could face torture in China.

Hundreds of people have died in recent years in China’s troubled far western region of Xinjiang due to violence between majority Han Chinese and Uighurs, who speak a Turkic language.

Over the years, hundreds, possibly thousands, of Uighurs have escaped unrest in Xinjiang by travelling clandestinely via Southeast Asia to Turkey.

Twenty-five Uighurs dug through their cell wall using broken tiles and then used blankets to climb out of the cell to make their dramatic escape from the detention centre in Thailand’s southern Songkhla province, immigration officials said.

Five were caught but the rest fled, officials said.

“Twenty are still at large,” Police Captain Prasit Timmakarn, sub-inspector of the detention centre, told Reuters, adding: “Heavy rain helped to mask the loud escape noises.” Prasit said authorities have set up checkpoints along the border.

In August 2015, a bomb planted at Bangkok’s Erawan shrine killed 20 people, most of them foreign tourists. Thai police arrested two Uighur men who are still on trial.

Authorities said the attack was prompted by an earlier crackdown on human smuggling networks but many analysts and diplomats said it was likely an act of revenge for Thailand’s deportation to China of the more than 100 Uighurs.

The Chinese government has blamed much of the Xinjiang unrest on separatist Islamist militants, though rights groups and exiles say that anger over tightening Chinese controls on the religion and culture of Uighurs is more to blame.

China routinely denies any repression in Xinjiang.

North Korea may have ICBM capable of reaching US this year, says South

0

SEOUL – South Korea’s spy agency said on Monday it is possible North Korea can develop an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of reaching the US mainland this year and that it is monitoring developments closely.

No sign of an imminent nuclear test had been detected, though the North’s Punggye-ri complex appears ready for another detonation “at any time”, the agency told lawmakers.

North Korea, pursuing nuclear and missile programmes in defiance of world condemnation, is also enforcing stronger controls on outside information in the face of international sanctions, the lawmakers said after a closed-door briefing.

'Wonder Woman' Gal Gadot is being accused of blaming a rape victim 13 years ago

0

Ever since Gal Gadot played Wonder Woman, she’s become an icon of feminism and every girl’s dream superhero. This is why it’s surprising to see a blog post accusing her of blaming a rape victim.

An unnamed Israeli actress wrote an entry on Medium titled “Here’s How Gal Gadot Actually Responded When My Friend Raped Me.” She detailed that she was roomies with Gal 13 years ago and that they hung out often. Gal would also give her advice on modeling and being careful around men. “Gal told me about men who followed models around to casting calls. They were paid by clubs to convince models like us to join them at these clubs in exchange for expensive food, drinks, publicity photos, and VIP treatment. Gal told me to never trust these men, because they rape.”

Even though Gal was depicted as a trustworthy friend, it went downhill after the unnamed actress was raped by a man named Yaniv. “I remember thinking that we were going home so that I would sleep on the couch, as Gal and I had before. I woke up in Yaniv’s bed, naked. He had removed my clothes when I was unconscious. I remember him climbing on top of me. I could just barely say ‘no,’ and ‘this isn’t right.’ Then I blacked out.”

The actress then told Gal about the incident, but instead of sympathy, she allegedly got mad and blamed her for what happened. “She stood over me, intimidating and loud, blaming me for what happened. Her eyes were fire. I had already felt small and violated, but she shamed me into feeling obsolete. I felt extremely dirty. Already in shock, I disassociated from my body. I can’t remember most of her words. I remember being in utter terror of her anger,” she wrote.

This comes as a surprise since Gal recently denounced producer Brett Ratner, who’s facing sexual assault allegations. She also pushed for his dismissal from the Wonder Woman 2 production. Otherwise, she won’t reprise her role.

The post has since been taken down by Medium but some netizens are still able to read and share it via a cache link. However, some are also not convinced by the story.

Still, this is a serious accusation against Gal and she must respond to it. As Wear Your Voice noted, Gal and her team should provide the necessary evidence to discredit the story if it is, indeed, false. “Instead, there is radio silence, as if these accusations do not matter,” they wrote.
